She was originally conceived as a "love interest" for Batman. So where does the lesbian angle come into it? Other than to appease the LGBT society. Once again, our childhood heroes being ripped apart for the sake of........what exactly?

Just because she is Batman's love interest doesn't mean she can't be a lesbian... Girls aren't made straight by guys liking them.

Also, it's not so much to appease the LGBT community as to bring some diversity to comic books, beyond different superpowers and colorful suits. There are a lot of LGBT people in the world, and a lot of LGBT comic fans, it's only right that those people are represented in the medium.

How does being a lesbian make any difference? Why mention it at all?

If it doesn't make a difference then why are you so bothered about it? I'm sure your childhood can survive if you really like her that much. The only difference will be that she looks at girls instead of guys. And hopefully, if there's no male love interest, then maybe we can avoid any embarrassing damsel in distress scenes undermining the heroine lead.

There shouldn't be a quota on the number of LGBT characters in movies; Shoehorning diversity into movies isn't going to solve anything. But, they are certainly underrepresented and often misrepresented through stereotyping. I'd rather see more honest and realistic portrayals/inclusion of LGBT people in cinema, than a flood of token characters to tick cast diversity boxes.
