Most Japanese don't eat this stuff and probably aren't too crazy about the hunt either. In fact I'm sure there are people in Japan who are firmly against it. What foreign activists should do is try to support local activists rather than play the part of the self-righteous ethnocentric gaijin. They'll probably get more done that way.

It's the same old story: You never hear people who made a ton of money on risky speculation complaining.

jumpultimatestarsJUL. 19, 2014 - 06:52AM JST this was just folksy humor, I don't see what the big deal is.

Yes- context and tone of voice would make this a different story.

China is not insane as these actions would indicate. My guess is that as their people begin to want more freedom, the establishment fears an overthrow. And there is no better way to create unity than to have a common enemy- real or not. I'm sure this is all very calculated.

I really hope that incident is seen as a fluke and things will eventually return to normal as they have since the Akihabara massacre. It's sad to see security measures like this in Japan. I just have to remind myself of the statistics on how safe Japan still is compared to almost everywhere else.

One thing you have to take into account in cases of rape or molestation is the embarassment of being a victim. It's prevalent in the U.S. and I'd imagine it's even worse in Japan.

I know people like to bring up the statement, "we have it under control," whenever a story like this comes up. But to be fair, when we have wild fires we use the same statement. It doesn't mean that the fire is completely extinguished. The fire can still be burning and killing wildlife; albeit at a slower rate.

Where I'm from (U.S.A.) when we hurt someone's feelings or offend them, we are generally taught to apologize. And we're not exactly known to be the most polite country out there. Just saying.
