Posted in: Japan's 18-year-olds at record-low 1.06 mil on falling births See in context

It is not a coincidence that these statistics come shortly after the Japanese economy stalled in the early 2000’s. Since then there has been no wage growth but taxes and the cost of living have increased greatly. People are not having kids simply because there is no job security and they can’t afford to have kids.

Don’t forget, Australia is a very big country and it is only a relatively small area in Queensland that is expected to get these super high temps. The photo of Sydney is a bit misleading. Sydney will have great weather over the new year weekend.

Posted in: Japan lifts operational ban on world's biggest nuclear plant in Niigata Prefecture See in context

This plant was commissioned in 1985 so it’s nearly forty years old. It originally had a service life of 30 years, which has conveniently been extended to fifty years. That means they only gave another decade to use this plant and then go through the decades long and extremely expensive process of decommissioning the plant. Tell me again how nuclear power is cheap.

Rewind and repeat. This scenario repeats itself over and over and again. You’d think that a developed and rich country would have better aged care and family support with 30% of the population being over 65. (Tongue in cheek)

Posted in: Avoiding a catastrophe if Mount Fuji erupts after major quake See in context

Mt. Fuji is overdue for a major eruption. The effects would be catastrophic considering the population density around the mountain. The eruptions in Asia over the last few decades have not been in heavily populated areas so there is little to compare with. Unfortunately, with Mt. Fuji, it’s not a matter of if it erupts. It’s a matter of when it erupts. There are around 40 million people living within 50 kilometers of the volcano. A major eruption could easily kill millions of people.

How does one extend the continental shelf? It is a geographical structure that has taken millions of years to form. The headline should state, Japan extends its economic exclusion zone.

Posted in: Japanese women fall prey to host clubs See in context

Nothing new to see here. This hosting scenario is as old as Japanese culture going back to when the overlords had concubines. These money spinning host clubs really came into fruition during the bubble years of the 60’s to the 80’s. As the economy started to slow over the last forty years or so these clubs have become more ruthless in their recruiting and payment structures to the point where the girls don’t work for the clubs, they are owned by the clubs. It’s a very dirty and corrupt business that is based solely on exploiting young women and taking copious amounts of money from desperate men. TIJ!

Always trying to take care of her? I think something got lost in translation. Hassling her about her whereabouts and who she was with, expecting to be in constant contact and be home on time every day is more like it. Killing someone for taking care of you doesn’t make sense.

@Ebisen - Interesting statistics. The only thing missing is the per capita footprint. Considering nearly half of the world’s population live in China their CO2 output is not that high. In fact, the per capita output of both the US and Japan is much higher.

Inger Andersen said the world needs to get to zero fossil fuel emissions “as fast as possible,”

Yeah, let’s all go back to the Stone Age and beat drums for communication. Do these boffins actually think about the crap they spout or do they just say the first thing that comes into their heads?

Even if all CO2 production was stopped tomorrow it would take up to 10,000 years for the CO2 levels to stabilize. These boffins should be focusing on how we are going to live with the climate changed caused by high CO2 levels instead of spouting impossible dreams.

The problem for Japan is not how they generate the power. It is how much power they generate. There is nothing conservative about Japan's power usage which forces them to generate huge amounts of power per capita.

It’s interesting the article has to start with him being unemployed. He was not unemployed. He had a 24/7 job looking after his ailing mother. This scenario is nothing new in Japan and keeps repeating itself with alarming regularity. These people get very little government assistance for the ailing parents who should be in care facilities. They should not be left for the families to care for. I’ve met many people in their 50’s and 60’s who will openly state they are waiting for their ailing parent to die so they can get their life back. Japan is a country that takes great pride in their elderly population but they do bugger all to help them.
