a real man works or sleeps a hangover off. And a real scientist studies something worthwhile.

Posted in: Clint Eastwood mocked for Republican convention appearance See in context

Haven't seen it yet but plan to and am kind of afraid to. On the one hand The Republican Party terrifies me (in fairness I'm not American). Obama has his problems to be sure but the modern GOP is so extreme that in comparison Reagan is a liberal, Nixon a radical and Eisenhhower an off the charts leftist.

On the other hand Eastwood is amazing. Seriously. Forget Dirty Harry stuff which was decent action but nothing compared to what he's directed. Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby, A Perfect World etc.. the list goes on and on. I can't name a greater living director other than maybe Scorsese.

Well said AlternateUniverse.

Maybe now would be the perfect time for such a film to come out.

Posted in: Chinese mob ravages Japanese restaurant during protest; later finds out it is Chinese-owned See in context

Actually there's nothing funny about this. So many of us want the "Chinese" to be "civilised", yet laugh at their misfortune?

Rise above it folks. Respect has to be on both sides before things get better.

Agreed. These protesters are obviously fools but there are a lot of hateful comments on here showing the same sort of backward thinking as the protesters.

As a native of Vancouver I can assure you that the idiotic mob mentality exists in a lot of places other than China.

I have to hand it to the Japanese, they make good sports fans. They go a little crazy but in a fun, non violent way.

Funny how even on a Japanese site they're paying more attention to Vertigo topping the critics' list than they are to Tokyo Story being voted #1 by the directors (also replacing Citizen Kane)

Posted in: Woman dies after being hit in face with beer glass in Tokyo bar See in context

No. Same Japan, different day. These incidents are newsworthy precisely because they are uncommon. That's the fundemental meaning and purpose of "news."According to information available at the National Police Agency's crime database, there's no significant increase in these kinds of incindents when compared against the last 10 years of data.

Thank you for posting a sensible comment that includes perspective and facts. Most people just like to make lame jokes or try to use these types of stories to spew out platitudes regarding "new trends" or larger societal problems that they don't know anything about.

Always nice to hear about charitable projects like this. I feel bad for saying this but I was actually shocked to read that Edward Albee is still alive.

Posted in: Penn State coach Paterno dies at 85; legacy clouded by scandal See in context

You ever do anything you that in hindsight, you realized was a mistake? I know I have. I don't blame JoePa for what happened, nor for what he failed to do. He reported it to the university, and assumed they would look into it. What I really question, is why this other coach, McQuerty, who supposedly witnessed a rape, didn't do more then simply tell JoePa about it? Why didn't he call the police? I can tell you, if I saw, what he is reported to have seen, I wouldn't have bothered to tell my father, or my brother, or my priest. I would have told the cops. If anything, he is the one who in my mind should have been castigated for this. I'm glad he came forward, but it shouldn't have happened 8 years after the fact.

A lot of JT commenters are a holier than thou bunch but I think it's warranted here. If there's any crime that you should under no circumstances keep hidden raping children is surely it. Paterno may not have been the worst of the bunch but he was a coward and that allowed the rape of innocent children to continue. Feel free to remember him primarily as a great football coach if you want but in my mind his legacy is tarnished.

The thought of Newt Gingrich as president of anything chills me to the bone but coming back from the dead twice in this long campaign is an impressive feat so my hat's off to him.

Posted in: Two more arrests made over death of Nepalese man in Osaka See in context

Scary stuff that you don't expect to hear about in Japan. If the perpetrator specifically mentioned kicking the "foreigner's" it sounds like it was racially motivated. It will be very interesting to see how The police and courts move forward. They have the four suspects arrested and security footage and it seems at least a partial confession. I hope justice is served for this poor Nepali man.

Yes and yes. Saying "sorry I was drunk" is not an excuse, you got drunk, you are responsible for you actions while drunk, getting drunk isn't a free pass to go and do whatever you want. I would mention several other articles but the mod would remove my post.

Who is saying that drunkenness is a free pass to do whatever you want? Not me certainly. The article doesn't say that he was released because he was drunk. They say that he was drunk and didn't remember a thing, and then at the end that he was released without charge. I'm no expert on the Japanese legal system but I had assumed that he wasn't charged because it was a very minor offense in which nobody was harmed and the police determined that he didn't have any malicious intention.

ahhh yes in Japan you can get away with anything by saying you were drunk and you dont remember.

Are you saying that the young man in this case should have faced charges or are you thinking of another case where somebody successfully used intoxication as a legal defense to an even remotely serious crime? I've seen it offered as an excuse/reason that people give for illegal activity but do you have any evidence to suggest it actually works?

wow - i was drunk didn`t remember a thing. there really should be laws against public drunkeness, trespassing, puking on trains, destroying property, starting fights, etc. in this country. there is still no shame attatched to being a drunken slob. it is a shame.

There are actually laws against pretty much all of these things are there not? Maybe not puking on trains but then that isn't always due to being drunk. There are certainly laws against violence, vandalism and indeed trespassing, hence why the young man was arrested here.

Interesting article but I pity those who think that Japanese beer is Kirin, Asahi, Sapporo and Ebisu are the height of Japanese beer.

I realize that makes me sound like a snob but those of you who have tried some of the Microbrews like Hitachino Nest or Baird will know what I'm talking about.

Posted in: Two riot police officers arrested for molesting izakaya worker See in context

If this is off topic then I apologize but I often read articles like this on JT about police being arrested for sexual harassment but don't often see articles about punishment or sentencing. People often make remarks in the comments section here suggesting that Police are usually not punished very heavily for this sort of thing. Can anybody give a link to a specific case somewhat similar to this that includes the punishment?

Thanks
