The Chinese leadership will continue to be egocentric in the medium term. The latest fishing boat incident with South Korea have shown they learn nothing from previous diplomatic failures.

South Korea's military command was seen to be indecisive after both the Cheonan sinking and the Yeonpyeong killings. SK has brought in more hawkish top brass. Swift retaliation is needed so that NK begins seeing the repercussions of being aggressive.

oberst, yo're correct. Kirin, for example, is the largest distributor of dairy foods, juice, and soon, beer in Australasia. Not bad for a people who didn't acquire "a proper understanding of economics."

It's a good chance for China to show leadership in the region. But they haven't as yet and so the likes of Japan, Sth Korea and Taiwan look for the US to provide stability. China may not like the U.S.'s presence in the area but they don't plug those political gaps with its neighbours. And it's all too easy to blame the US for the current arrangement.

Let's hope the NZ army doesn't have to operate in wet conditions. Obviously their robots don't like rain and the cool green and brown facepaint would run.

Japan is not a "test case" in the Pacific Rim free trade region. It is very late in considering free trade integration.

War is between military industrial structures, not merely soldiers. Women and children in Hiroshima were manufacturing weapons and ammunition. Therefore they become targets.

Posted in: Japan may form new unit to watch Chinese navy See in context
Japan's focus on detection capability is late. South East Asian defence spending, particularly on navies, has increased dramatically. These countries saw China's rise as a hard threat. Japan was hoping China would continue its soft power approach - however the Chinese party's ideology and control structures would always be based on unbalanced power.

"The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme aims to promote grass roots internationalisation at the local level..." This is a two way process - good JETS become a conduit of cultural dissemination in Japan and their home country. English improvement is a just a plus.

The Chinese are keen to improve relations now, because this is damage control. They've confirmed the importance of the U.S.'s role and alliances in the region. Counter-productive result for China.

If China was indeed a "Superpower", they would laugh and give the Japanese Coast Guard double the repair costs. They won't do that, because they are amateurs. And the reason the Japanese government released the captain, was to preempt the release of the four Japanese nationals held for "spying".

He's of the same ilk as those who burn flags, bibles, and effegies. These are actions of those who have no sinificant response. Smearing a koran in pork fat would be a more insulting gesture.

When some clown is barking at their phone when your ear is inches away from their mouth, you lose control. You can walk away from most noise, but not so on a train or bus. The guy back chatted and got punched. Hopefully the train crushed his phone. I don't punch but 'accidental' shoulders, elbows and knees or coughing at their phone soon shut the conversation down.

Posted in: Japanese company meetings: Getting by at the table See in context
Meetings are farcical. Start exactly on time, no more than 40 minutes, background material given to attendees beforehand so that meeting is based on solutions not, "Why is this happening?" questions. No coffees, no notes, no phones. People should remember what's been said. If they need minutes, they're not listening. Always finish a meeting early. Military and TV newsrooms have the best meetings. Most meetings are atrocious around the world. If meeting requests pop up on Outlook.... red X 50% of them. People will respect you for it.

Very few navies would let an unauthorised aircraft approach their craft. The Chicoms wouldn't try this with Russian or U.S. ships.
