Posted in: Women speak out about sexual violence after Great East Japan Earthquake See in context
Just not as often or as heinous as their western or Asian peers. and stats show it.
You know what stats show in Japan? That a majority of victims of sexual assault don't report the crime, and those who try to are discouraged from doing so by those in positions of authority. Those victims who insist on trying to get the rapist charged, are further discouraged from going to trial, and are hounded by the media and accused of lying.
These stats are nothing to be proud of.

Posted in: When a woman comes forward about being sexually assaulted or harassed by a now-famous man a long time ago, how do you know whether to believe her or not? How should the media report such cases? See in context
Because someone who speaks out about being a victim of sexual assault does not benefit from it at all, except for seeing justice done.

Why do men rape? What are the reasons?
Stress? Childhood trauma? Misunderstanding?
No.
It's because they can. Because they think they have the right to. Because society allows them to get away with it.

I know a woman who has suffered terribly from this. It is appalling, what the companies have done to these women. All the money Johnson & Johnson reluctantly hand over will not be able to make up for the damage they have done.

"extermination" - the killing of a living creature which does not want to die.
The process - trap the living creature, transport her, keep her in a cage with several other living beings or alone - either is terrifying - then shove her in a metal box with several other living beings and slowly gas her.
This is not humane.

A man who hits a woman is not a man
Then what is he?
That phrase elevates being a "man" to something special, beyond crime or violence. That is wrong.

The suggestion that "real men don't" commit sex crimes or other acts of violence is a dangerous one. It make people believe that their neighbour, their colleague, their brother, their boyfriend, or that regular-looking guy in a suit on the subway or in the bar isn't capable of harming you. But he is, he really is.
Pushing this idea leads to victims of crime being doubted because "he looks so nice, he can't have done that!"
There is no such thing as a real or not a real man. They're all men.

Men hit women all the time -
cue chorus of "Not all men!" from those who don't understand that use of a plural doesn't automatically mean 100% -
and of course those violent men are men, just as the men who steal, rape, kill, and fight, are men.

So, why didn’t they just use the word “FamiLy” for the name of the app, as in “FamilyMart”? Not so hard, is it?
Christ on a bike...
First of all, they don't need the 'l', they can call it whatever they like.
Secondly, it's a Japanese company. Wordplay is common. I reckon here it's a portmanteau creation connecting the English word 'family' with the Japanese word 'ii' which means 'good'.

if it is not a union between a man and a woman, it should be called a civil union.
It is one of the ironies of how LGBTI+ rights have progressed in some countries in the UK that initially, when same-sex couples were legally allowed to register their partnership in 2004, they weren't allowed to call it marriage, but a civil partnership. Upstanding respectable Christian people complained, you see, that the word "marriage" could only be used for a woman and a man.
Same-sex marriage was legalised in England and Wales in 2014, and same-sex couples already in a civil union were able to be married.
What happened next?
Well, choosing to ignore the fact that the existence of civil partnerships was caused not by favouritism but by bigotry, heterosexuals started bitching that it wasn't fair that same-sex couples were allowed this extra right to choose between a civil partnership and a marriage. No fair! they cried. Why do those people get both, while we only get marriage?
Marriage was now, for some odd reason, not enough for the heterosexuals. Their human rights were being trampled.
Fair enough, said the European Convention on Human Rights. From 2018 any adult, consenting pair of human animals of any gender may enter into a civil partnership instead of a marriage.
I think Japan is so lucky to be free of the religious nonsense that has upheld bigotry and homophobia for so long. Individual wards, towns, and cities, as well as private organisations, have been going ahead and doing what they can to support human rights. The government can drag its heels all it likes, but equality and legal security for all couples is inevitable.
Human rights, you see.

A lot of the focus is on Mia Farrow, but it is Dylan Farrow who returned to make the accusation as an adult, seven years ago, at the age of twenty eight or so.
The counter-accusation is that she has chosen to repeat a falsehood because she was coached to do so at the age of seven by her mother. She is now thirty five, married with a child, busy with her own life, with no reason to return to all this except because it's true - to subject herself to such media scrutiny for a lie would have no positive impact on her.

What a ridiculous comment. A man who, together with his partner, makes some life decisions, and because these decisions make both people happy, it is a sign that the man is under his partner's thumb, rather than, y'know, being one of a couple.
Harry's mental health has obviously been a concern to him, and it is obviously better for his (and his family's) mental health to be away from the poisonous UK media and public.

While I absolutely believe and support Dylan Farrow, I have to point out that Woody Allen did not marry his adopted daughter, and he was not involved in her upbringing. Soon-Yi Allen nee Previn was adopted by Mia Farrow and Andre Previn.
Doubting the victim and discounting their voice, especially when s/he is or was a child, has been so common in our culture over the generations. And it's always been wrong to do so. You'd think people would have learnt by now. Dylan Farrow was seven years old, which is certainly old enough to remember what is done to you.

Rape is one form of sexual assault. The woman may have asked for details not to be released.
When the press report says a victim was "...found safe and unharmed...", that doesn't mean they weren't raped either; it just means they are back with their loved ones and the injuries are not visible.
