Posted in: Japan officially announces IWC withdrawal; will resume commercial whaling See in context

It was only a matter of time... Everybody knows they were never doing any real research. Whalers included.

Posted in: S Korea's surviving 'comfort women' spend final years seeking atonement from Japan See in context

Geezus... This again? 25+ years of holding a vendetta... That's a life wasted IMHO. I get it, they got raped, and that scars a person for life. I feel sorry for them, and agree, that they should be supported by their government to recover as much as possible emotionally and psychologically. Unfortunately, dead men can't make apologies. Taking it out on their descendants is both unfair and won't undo what has been done. Move on. You've only got a little time left to live your lives!

Posted in: 11-hour waiting time at Mickey Mouse attraction at Tokyo Disneyland See in context

I'm (almost) surprised that they haven't imposed theme park max capacity restrictions yet. The wait times at both Disney theme parks is ridiculous. Then again, there are those that go just for the Disney atmosphere. Not gonna lie, my wife and I are two of those people who'd go for that very reason. I do wish our kids could enjoy the rides a bit more like we did when we were younger at the Anaheim park.

Trying to spot a girl in that first photo is like a Where's Wally picture.

Posted in: A record 3,111 people became stranded on Japanese mountains last year. Should stranded climbers have to pay for the costs of their rescue? See in context

As someone who's climbed Mt. Fuji before, I've witnessed and experienced many incidents on the climb up that other climbers (including myself) did not expect to hit them so badly (I didn't need rescuing, but there was a younger climber than myself who was really getting hit hard by altitude sickness that couldn't move anymore and was really struggling to breathe. It can happen to anyone). Taxes are paid for emergencies such as these, as well as travel insurance). To penalise someone for encountering problems when hiking or climbing a mountain (or any sport for that matter) is both ignorant and heartless, even to me (I'm far from being the sympathetic type). Would you charge someone for having to be airlifted to a hospital after collapsing in a soccer match? I don't think so.

Just big enough to stuff in backpacks as souvenirs.

Posted in: Five of the worst areas to live in and around Tokyo See in context

Not surprised about Kamakura being on the list. It's a tourist hotspot and gets super congested. Nice to look at and wander through, terrible to live in. Surrounding areas are quite nice though, especially Chigasaki!

No. Not unless it somehow curbs idiots from breeding and improves the gene pool.

Yes, but it definitely favours some more than others.

Posted in: Do you think that U.S. President Donald Trump can unify his country, in view of the massive protests against him and his disputes with mainstream media? See in context

No, not because of Trump, but because liberals and conservatives are so entrenched into their own mindsets that they're blinded from noticing any actual progress or regression by their own overinflated egos.

He's gotta learn to be the bigger man, stop tweeting and running his mouth on social media, and just show his critics solid action.

Had a lot of respect for Meryl Streep prior to that speech. Why stoop to such a low level? Pity.

Posted in: Abe pledges $8.7 billion investments, aid in drug war to Philippines See in context

Normally I'm in opposition of Abe, but this is money well spent. Duterte's war on drugs is a good thing. I do feel that both he and Japan should loosen their stance on marijuana though.

Posted in: A mother leaves Japan so that her teen son can stay See in context

Cold or not, the law is the law and must be obeyed. An illegal immigrant is an illegal immigrant. I feel for the kid, and even for the mother (she moved to Japan for a better life than she had in Thailand. Going back won't be easy, especially under these circumstances), but the law must take priority over emotion, otherwise precedence will be set for all illegals.

No. You only need to turn on auto-captions on YouTube to see why. It's hilarious.

Posted in: Do you think democracy is the best form of government? See in context

Depends on a number of factors, not the least of which is cultural background and the level of education of the populace. Democracy is not a one size fits all solution.
