Posted in: Japan sees 1st dengue fever case in nearly 70 years See in context

Japan does have the dengue vector A. Aegypti mosquito. There is no natural immunity once infected. In fact, previously infected individuals can develop potentially life threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever. The pathophysiology involves an auto immune response in a previously infected individual.

The best way to prevent dengue is to avoid mosquito bites with the usual preventive measures.

Ammonia is commonly used as a refrigerant in the food industry. It has a low odor threshold and can cause individuals to become acutely ill.

Cowards. Throwing eggs from the safety of a moving car. If they have issues with gaijin, they should confront them face to face.

Kawaiso... Where is the child's father in this? I doubt he pays child support. I don't know for sure but I heard the family court system in Japan awards meager amounts of child support to the custodial parent. Enforcement is also nonexistent and many deadbeat dad's shirk their financial responsibility and don't even see their kids.

I concur with those selectively teaching a lesson to those idiots walking with their craniums buried in their phones. I've done it to males and stared them down unapologetically after the hit. Of course I'm always prepared to deal with possible retaliation but all just kept going on their way.

Most carry .38 specials. He needed at least 2 rounds in the center of mass to drop his chinchin in the dirt. Too bad he didn't aim higher and to the left...the perp got what he deserved for attempted murder of a police officer.

Verdict should be guilty with death sentence by slow exsanguination. He should feel the pain just like his poor victim did. RIP Arisa...

I attended the recent Tokyo Motor Show which was great! Although foreign brands like BMW and Mercedes were there, I was surprised that American makes like the new Chevy Camaro, Corvette and Cadillacs were absent.

Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate! It is a mantra preached by the military when we are in hot weather operations. My Japanese friend was surprised when she saw how much water I drank during this recent heat spell.

Perhaps they should string a cable at neck level with signs warning of no smartphone use while walking/riding across problem corridors. People paying attention can duck under, but those not will get clothes lined and learn their lesson.

Its about time Japan recognizes the importance of the child maintaining frequent and continuing contact with BOTH parents. The med/psych research shows it is best for the child's mental and emotional development/health. I hope domestic family court laws will follow too.

Posted in: Osaka to reintroduce Saturday classes for elementary schools See in context

I think Saturdays would be better spent doing extracurricular activities (arts and athletics) or family time. Parents can send their kids to enrichment and/or remedial academics on Saturdays at their discretion. I think more emphasis should be placed on educating well-rounded, mentally and physically healthy individuals. It may even help decrease the high suicide rate among Japanese students. Just my $.02

BMW is the ultimate driving machine! (while it lasts). After the warranty is over, you need to trade it in or lease a new one. J-cars are more reliable, but no one can beat the fun to drive factor and utilility of a 4-5 passenger BMW sports sedan! (335 or M3)

I salute and thank these brave vets for their sacrifice and service. I had the pleasure of meeting some of these hero's (including Medal of Honor recipients) at a dedication ceremony/flight of a C-17 Globemaster jet that was named the "Spirit of Go For Broke" after their unit. We also displayed this jet at Yokota Air Base in the annual Japan-America Friendship Festival/Air Show. People waited 2-3 hours in the sweltering August heat to get a chance to sit in the cockpit. I was surprised very few Japanese know of the story of the 100th/442nd and their accomplishments.

So what about Japan-Hawaii routes? Don' forget us!! Jal better look in the rear-view mirror and watch out for Hawaiian Air. They have direct service between HNL and Haneda, Osaka, Fukuoka and Sapporo(Nov 2012). Hawaiian Air's service is better than other American carriers. Their on-time performance is #1 in the US. (I am not a Hawaiian Air employee).
