Posted in: 21,818 people committed suicide in Japan in 2023, health ministry says See in context

No wonder der the population is declining. If this many people off themselves,;perhaps Japan should stopbragging about what a great place it is to live. Kt is ironic that the figure is exactly the same as JR train delays. Japan has suicide hotlines.More people should use them.

He will be dead by the time Japanese police confirm his identity. He should be incarcerated despite his cancer. What he did to innocent Koreans in Japan is heinous.

As a shareholder and songwriter this is unacceptable. The por people of Fukushima need closure. The waste should be disposed of. It has already been a decade. I have lost faith in TEPCO and Japanese government.

Beppu is the best. It is far better than Yufuin which is basically fake and overpriced as it is geared towards couples. People who understand the intricacies of onsen, such as myself, understand why Beppu is the best in the world. It is a dynamic city, as well. Boasting a rich culinary culture and an art loving population, Beppu is a great place to showcase one's art and music when not bathing. I like it so much, I wrote and recorded an entire double album about it in just one night while staying at a quaint little Ryokan. Definitely worth a week long trip.

Posted in: Daihatsu sees long wait to reopen factories after faking safety tests See in context

While safety is important, what they did wasn't all that bad. Because of stupid government regulations created by folks who know nothing about cars, factory workers are now suffering, as are consumers. Any somewhat inspected Daihatsu is still 100 times safer than a British or German car.

Finally some positive news. The Japanese Red Cross is one of the few organizations in this country that actually does food things for society. She will be a perfect match and perhaps, a poster girl for them. Wishing her the best of luck in her future endeavors. She just might meet a blood donating Prince Charming, too.

Posted in: Suspect in killing of 8 people in suburban Chicago has fatally shot himself in Texas, police say See in context

This is precisely why America needs a wall between Canada and the US. How the USA can tolerate dangerous and violent foreigners flooding thru both the northern and southern borders is a mystery. Police have enough trouble just dealing with domestic issues. When foreign mass murderers come in, it should be a national issue, but Biden does nothing. He should be held responsible for this and the other crimes.

Hardly newsworthy compared with more severe and devasting Japanese earthquakes. Perhaps Chinese architecture is superior? Still, concerned for the safety and well being of the citizens.

Uniqlo is suing them for copyright infringement? Give me a break. 75% of their designs are clearly pilfered. I doubt Mary Poppins approves of either company using her name for their crummy cheapo bags. SheIn makes things affordable for Japanese customers. Uniqlo, however rips off customers outside of Japan. Their crummy bag is overpriced in America bit cheap in Japan. Sue them for both dumping domestically and price gouging abroad. Let's hope Shein can find justice in Tokyo's courtroom.

Posted in: Japan literary laureate unashamed about using ChatGPT See in context

When used properly, ChatGPT is a blessing. Authors like Grisham, Picoult and Martin, who make frivolous lawsuits should be boycotted and their works removed from bookshelves and online bookstores. Rie Kudan is a genius and is simply using technology available to anyone to assist her writing. If they had had PCs, surely Kerouac and Dickens would've used them to type, and perhaps use AI for assistance with writer's block. I use it for my music and writing, but not as well as Kudan because nobody buys my stuff. This just proves that she is using it for the betterment of literature, so please stop complaining about her and start praising her for putting it to good use.

Innocuous tattoos, like ink depicting David Bowie or say, Doraemon, should be allowed, but Yakuza-esque tattoos should definitely be banned. Aside from that, both sento and onsen are superior to Swedish saunas and European spas. America's Hot Springs, Arkansas, however, is pants down the world's best hot springs.

People said he mocked French people and culture. Now we have North Koreans accusing this award winning actor of the same. Utterly sickening. He will win the appeals and actors across the globe should support him.

The construction company in charge of this disaster should have their entire staff make 8000 thousand paper cranes as a symbol of peace between the construction company and the kindergarten. That is 1000 cranes for every innocent child injured due to the careless actions of adults. Hey, if it worked for stopping atomic bombings, it should definitely work for preventing traffic accidents.

So, in a sense, JAL is saying "We've fired another male president", isn't it? Some haters will say she is only going to be used as a scapegoat. Other haters will say, "JAL is just trying to make people forget the accident by appointing a female to get positive news exposure." Fact of the matter is that these folks are clueless about the airline industry, PR, and marketing. She will be an excellent president and JAL will soon set world records for quality, safety, punctuality, in-flight catering, comfort and frequency of flights. Expect to see flight attendant calendars featuring male flight attendants as a nod to the brave firefighters who unsuccessfully fought the fire caused by human idiocy at Haneda Airport. Under her leadership, no more capital goods will be destroyed. JAL stock is looking good.

The Rays are getting a superior yakyu pitcher at a bargain rate for the inferior MLB league, plus the Ham will still make money, and the pitcher will get to put all of those English lessons to use in Spanish speaking Florida. This, my friends, is a win-win-win-win (and maybe more wins if you count the media attention, merchandise sales, etc.). Next year is looking splendid for both yakyu and baseball alike.

Based on the reporting and comments here on Japan Today,à clearly old media is better. When newspapers ruled the world, letters from readers were well thought out and from intelligent people. Reporters actually got scoops and researched facts instead of repeating verbatim what a politician or police official said to say. Nowadays, nutters make click bait news and folks who are bonkers comment on them. Sickening, really.

This is a travesty. Samsung is superior, and they don't use dodgy child and slave labor. Why anyone uses Apple remains a mystery, and it is disappointing to read that they are outselling Samsung. Apple also has the tendency to force unnecessary updates upon users and overcharge for repairing their defective products, something Korean companies never do.

Good to hear. It is sad when a dialect dies. Hoping Shanghai's dynamic and unique dialect lives on. My clarinet teacher definitely spoke it and I think their Chinese sounded better than the Chinese I hear when their PM speaks. Does anyone else think so? Surely it's more musical than bland Mandarin.

Sundance is an amazing festival. 40 years went by quickly. The number of artistically made films that went on to become blockbuster hits is amazing. While they have never nominated any of my submissions, I respect what they are doing and their vision. It was very noble of Robert Redford to bring this to Utah, which, unfortunately, has a reputation as being no fun. But, during Sundance, I'm sure the place is buzzing with excitement. Can't wait to see what wins this year.

The irony of an American youth defeating a game created by a Russian and programmed by Japanese adults! Since the 80s, gaming has been huge and the best gamers get endorsements, hefty cash prizes, fame, fortune and groupies. Hoping this kid stays focused and goes onto greatness and doesn't fall into the volatile lifestyle that musicians such as myself do. Congratulations on your Tetris record. It is a far more intellectual and superior game to say GTA and other violent games.

Maersk, like many Danish companies, is run by pragmatic yet caring individuals. Safety of their workforce is a top priority, along with ensuring their vessels don't get blown to high heaven because some people are arguing about LAND due to religion. These same people rely on shipping to deliver them sundries, amenities, vehicles, improvised electronics CD-Rs, foodstuffs, you name it. What do container ships and oil tankers have to do with a meaningless pointless religious war being carried out by bombastic blowhard zealots who claim to be protecting their respective countries by sending innocent youths to fight and die?

Because many born in Japan are pro-Pyongyang Korean residents, this makes perfect sense. But, as the modern day prophets Difford & Tillbrook preached "Actions speak louder than words.".
