Silvafan, I agree. The "civilized" west doesn't give a crap about the weekly deadly terrorist attacks in africa/middle east/SEA, only when it hits one of their own countries.

People really get mad at the dumbest things... I think it looks quite tasteful and festive, and you can take off the band if festive is not your thing and keep the red cup.

Sundays are better days to hold family-oriented parades, and in Japan is common to see Halloween-related parties starting from a week before the actual day.

Yes, and the teachers, administrators, school officials and police, when warned about a possible bomb threat, didn't evacuate any part of the school, so obviously nobody was very worried it was an actual bomb. Why treat the kid like they did?

There's nothing wrong with looking forward to to a fun festivity. Celebrate the dead by having fun in your life! So what if it originated in the west? It fits in with Japanese culture and their love of ghost stories right up.

Finally!! I agree they should definitely hold an open poll/vote (online/phone) between the top 3-5 designs. Specially since we're going to be paying for them for many years to come. Of course this is not going to happen, but let's hope this time they go with something more joyful and less copied.

Yes, please, this is a beautiful logo! (And also perfect for summer merchandise.) It's fun and has an all-ages appeal, unlike the stiff monochromatic "T" that appeals to the obvious 70 y/os that chose it.

Posted in: Japan to ask WTO for ruling on food dispute with S Korea See in context

Seems to me like Korea is perfectly happy to lift the ban, otherwise they wouldn't even agree to negotiations. They are probably asking for too much out it because they know Japan is in a corner, in this instance.

I should be appalled that copyright infringement is showing its ugly head again, but I'm sooo happy and filled with hope that this mean we'll get another, much better logo, that I applaud Mr. Sano and cheer him to keep speaking out about this until organizers have no other option than to remove "his" design!

Fox, I agree with you! I love Japanese cashiers, specially in supermarkets: "Hello. Do you have a point card? Would you like chopsticks/spoon? Total is ####." And I always, always give them a "domo." When I go to the states on visits it always freaks me out how much the cashiers want to talk at times. I went to the market to buy food, not to tell a stranger about my day/family/holidays!

"back to sanity" as if being different is insane? What you consider "normal" fashion might be someone else's "boring" fashion. There's no more harm in these girls covering their faces with make-up they enjoy than other girls covering their faces with society-approved make-up just to fit in.

Actually, I'm not sure if this is so in Japan but in many countries your passport is not actually yours, it's your goverment's property, so theoretically, they have the right to seize them.

I agree with Coconut. Some of the stuff is very bad (such as all the personal information leaked) but as for some of the emails... well... 2 weeks ago it was all Star Wars this Star Wars that, Jurassic World this, Marvel that, but now all everyone is talking about and will be talking about for a while is Sony. I'm pretty sure everyone will flock to the theaters to see how a James Bond movie costs over $300mill and lets not forget how Spiderman is suddenly back on front pages and how awesome a 21Street x MiB movie would be.

Posted in: Scotland ready to make history; banks say they'll head south if it's a 'Yes' vote See in context

Is delusional to think that there will be no banks operating in Scotland if they become independent, or other firms for that matter. If one business leaves, another will come in, because they're still making money. There are many small countries that do just fine and although it would be a bumpy road at the start, Scotland has more than enough things to keep their economy going.

People just need to realize an opportunity like this doesn't come often, so wherever they vote "yes" or "no" they should base it on things other than a knee-jerk reaction from either side (which is what's happening now).

Posted in: Supreme Court rules DNA test results cannot revoke paternal status of child's father See in context

This ruling is to protect the child. It's not the child's fault his biological father turns out to be not her/his mom's husband. When the husband saw his wife pregnant and agreed to become a parent and raise the child, why should the child be casted off suddenly because the husband has a fit because he's not his own blood? Sure, have a fight with your wife, get divorced if you want, but the child is innocent in all this, and he needs some kind of protection.

I've heard really good things about this movie and I can't wait to watch it. It's a little sad it didn't take with American audiences as it would have shown that it's OK to do an action movie that's not a remake or RandomSequel 3. You may think his movies are cookie-cutter (I don't think that's the case, personally), but at least with him you're guaranteed to have an enjoyable time.

Posted in: Japan to ban possession of child porn, but manga, anime exempt See in context

People seem to forget drawn characters have no birth certificate and there is no way to visually see their age unless told through written word. Sure, you can distinguish a baby from a ten year old. But how do u distinguish a 13 y/o from a 14 y/o or a 15 y/o from a 16 y/o? What if it's a 15 y/o but looks younger? What kind of law do you come up with that judges the age of a drawing? You make the artists have to list the age of the characters? But then, what happens if you draw something with an "elin" from the video game TERA? They may look child-like but they are 100 years old. Even if you forget about the morality of putting limits on art expression, there is just no way to draw (ha-ha) the line.
