*The war that Japan started has been over for 67 years and it is time for Japan to return sovereignty to the Kingdom of the Ryukyu Islands ; which immediately will become Memorial Island and pay homage to the thousands of people that died in that war. - persons who were from China, Korea, theUSA, Russian and even Japan. It is time that both Japan and the Ryukyu Islands become dependent on their own decisions. Work with China and first send all the USA military back to their home base.It seems to me that this fellow Noda is going to be a solid leader for the Japanese people.

We are facing financial problems and all the woold will have to work together and thoughful leadership will be needed in all counties - all over this world. I feel you have a winner in Noda.

Minello7: You have it all wrong; It is Japan that wants Futema closed or moved. Okinawa is never asked - JUST TOLD. The UN was supposed to return Okinawa to Sovereignty Status vis the High Commissioner route where-in The Ryukyuan people were to be trained to attain Statehood status - however Japan NEVER agreed to what was known as the Cairo Accords of 1943. Remember that Roosevelt wanted to give the Ryukyu Islnds to China, but China said they didn't have the money to support the Ryukyu Islands - however now that oil and gas have been discovered in the Senkaku area - you are seeing what is a horse of another hue.

The answer to this whole problem is to be found in a book written by Chalmers John son called "Dismantling the Empire" and it should be done right now and it will include almost 800 bases all over this world. (At a savings of over a trillion dollars.) We are not and never should be the policemen of the world. Get off your ass and bring this episode to a glorious fini.

THE PAST IS PAST AND WE ARE NOW FACING THE FUTURE. We should all try to get along and help each other. Prosperity can only be realized when we work together. China and Japan can and shouyld set the meter - show respect for each other and the rest of us will follow naturally. Noda is new, but he is doing well and we will get more from him if we don't go overboard by being too critical. Pat him on the back and watch him beam. His selection of the Panda route was like turning on the light. I look forward to seeing Noda and Hu arm in arm.

The comments are more iteresting than the story itself. International schools make you think and in reality you learn from yourself. It is wonderful that all over the world there are international schools wherein you have to learn the language of the country and in many case the tuition is free. I suggest this is the first step toward understanding your neighbors and a war-free" world. Every country in the world should budget for free international schools..............

Globalwatcher: The Cairo Accords were part and parcl of the Potsdam Declaration and it has been alreay been activated in as much as Kores, and Formosa (Taiwan) have already been returned and so has the Kurile Islands and Japan put together a Reversion document that ostensibly signed by the Ryukyuan people asking to be returned to Japan as a prefecture. The UN put a High Commisioner into the Ryukyu Islands and it to be be worked out by the United Nations - So far it has not been brought to a decision.

The Ryukyuan people on Kinawa have SSI same as all the other Prefectures and they are taxed same as to rest of Japan

I might add that Japan arranged to have the final battle on Okinawa and over 240 thousand Ryukyuans lose their lives in a battle they wanted no part of.

gtlobalwatcher: First the Potsdam Declaration was the absolute surrender of Japan from WW11 and the Cairo Accords gave back all lands "taken by violence or greed." NOW is the time for diplomacy and I can assure you that unless Japancaarys in a comrimising mood - that everyone and everything will be as it was in 1941. Maybe you haven't learned that China now has a Carrier stationed off the Senkaku Islands and a wrong move by Japan could plunge us all back in deep trouble. Also I have been on Okinawa (off and on) for the past 66 years and I work with Masahide Ota the former governor of the Ryukyu Islands Incidentally, I am ninety years old and I fought the Japanese and at the time of WW11 China was one of our allies. Japan was our enemy. I am married to a Ryukyuan girl and I am a member of the Taba family on Okinawa and my home is in Uechi.

130 COMMENTS ABOVE and none of you understand the Cairo Accords of 1943 or know the absolute size of the Senkaku Island. The absolute best move is to immediately return the Ryukyu Islands to Kingdom status and allow the Ryukyuan leadership to work with the Chinese. The USA should immediately return the Marines that are on Okinawa back to the USA. The USA and Japan cannot afford to do otherwise. Diplomacy should become the best answer to all our problems from now on ; our posturing at this time will only hasten the end of the USA as we know it today.

Japan has "USED" Okinawa ever since the annexation back in 1879 and Hiro hito made a deal with McArthur that put occupational troops on Okinawa rather then on the four main islands of Japan.

In the late sixties Honda made a S 600 and I bought three of them and shipped them to the States and everyone wanted to buy them from me. WHY? Because I got 70 miles to the gallon and I could drive frim San Francisco to Portland Oregon for peanuts. Golly, I wish Honda would make this model again. I would buy a half dozen of them.

Listen to YuriOtani - She is the one closest to the actual truth of what happened some 66 years ago _ I know as I was there and I have the papers to prove it. I continually write the USA Military should return to the States and the Ryukyu Islands become a sovereign State w/o a military.

Hirohito gave the Ryukyu Islands to McArthur if he would not put the Army of Occupation on the Japanese mainland and instead put out military on Okinawa. McArthur put a three star General into a High Commissioner's job on Okinawa on Okinawa and everybody was happy. Okinawa is the greatest duty station in the world.

I seem to be the only person who remembers the Cairo Accords of 1943 when Japan was forced to give back all lands they took by violence or greed.. In 1945 Korea was only one Korea, but a cicvil war divided Korea to be a North and South Korea.. I feel the USA military should return to the States and allow China to shake up the Japanese memories. \Remember the Cairo Accords also mentions Taiwan (Formosa) Russia, China, The Ryukyu Islands andKorea.

This is something the Japanese would like to forget.
