Please, please, please Japan Today!
No more Ohtani news. Most people are sick to death of him . . . .
I'm sure he's a nice guy and he's certainly a very talented player but every single day we are bombarded with news about his latest antics. Enough already!

I don't know why they give the NBA results on Japan Today. It would seem that not very many readers are interested as shown by the distinct lack of comments.

Prove it. Take a photo on the surface with today's headline from JT.
I agree. No pictures from the surface as yet - I'm beginning to smell a rat.
The US Perseverance rover began sending pictures within minutes of landing on Mars. We've had nothing and it's been well over 24 hours. Too much national prestige at stake for failure, methinks.
Quite easy for the Chinese to fake success - relay signals to and from their spacecraft already in orbit around Mars and build a nice 'Hollywood style' Mars set here on Earth.

Anything to back up the assertion that the Royals are more popular than ever? Genuine question.
Take a look at this poll. Not as unpopular as some would believe (except that Harry’s standing has plummeted within recent weeks, certainly within the UK).

But what kind of car? A mini-van? a sedan? a sports car? ... just curious because I am due to buy a car and wondering what kind of car the old man was driving to survive a head on collision with non-life threatening injuries. It will definitely NOT be a K, at least, not for a family car that is.
Of course, going on past evidence, it must be Toyota Prius.

Posted in: Kobe city bus hits several pedestrians; 2 dead See in context
Of course this is a terrible event and it seems that the 64-year old bus driver is responsible. Something does disturb me however - there does seem to be a considerable difference in the treatment of the suspect of another, not dissimilar case. The 87-year driver who caused the death of a mother and her young daughter not two or three days ago has not yet been arrested, is still addressed with the honorific '-san' in Japanese news reports, and still refuses to admit that he was at fault. The bus driver's picture, on the other hand, was soon available in every news report and of course he lost his honorific title. The 87-year old's picture has yet to be seen. An ordinary bus driver seems to me fair game but a privileged 87-year old ex-financial ministry official and former amukudari (with a well-known construction machinery company) appears to have many powerful friends to protect him. There does seem to be a significant difference in the treatment of suspects according to their social and financial position in this country.

Why limit yourself to two versions? A third possibility is that you misunderstood/misread the news flash. A fourth is that you are deliberately trying to spread fake news. A fifth is that you don’t know the difference. There may be more.
You make some good points Educator60, however:
The newsflash was witnessed and understood by three members of the same family - two of whom are
Japanese. There was absolutely no misunderstanding.
I am not and never have been in the habit of spreading fake news. I am simply relating what I saw. Please
can you provide everyone with more evidence that the police version of the story is true before making such
a serious personal accusation.
I may be completely wrong in my view of what might have happened but I think that it's important for
people to decide for themselves.
A little bit of politeness is important even if you strongly disagree with someone else's views.-1 ( +0 / -1 )
Posted in: Prison escapee caught in Hiroshima after 3 weeks on run See in context
This is a really interesting case and an excellent example of the Japanese police's attempt to present a infallible image to the public at any cost.
Just after noon yesterday (12.10) I saw a brief news message flashed up on TV (NTV channel 4) that Tatsuma Hirao had turned himself in at a police station in Hiroshima. He had NOT been recaptured by officers after receiving a tip. A short while afterwards there came the 'official' news that he had been dramatically caught after a short chase and there was the issue of a rather unclear photograph of someone being wrestled to the ground. There are perhaps two possible conclusions to draw from this. Either the original news item, when it was first reported, was inaccurate and later corrected or the police took it upon themselves to concoct a story and recover a bit of their self respect. As for Hirao himself - he might well have been told that it would be easier for him in the long run to go along with the police version of events.
Which version of the story you choose to believe is entirely up to you. Taking into account the police's previous incompetent manhunt I rather fear that the second story rings more true.

Happy Mountain Day!
However, I'm sure that many people would like not to be told when to take time off from their jobs so why does the government feel as though it has to decide?
How about a little bit of personal choice about when to take holidays? It would be a good way of avoiding overcrowded and expensive trains, planes and hotels and it would make our precious time off a little more special.

Someone extremely important or influential must have been on that plane - no mention of names anywhere except for the pilot's. Perhaps the media has somehow been 'persuaded' not to enquire further into the identity of the passengers. Before anyone mentions DNA analysis or unrecognisable condition of bodies remember a flight plan is almost always filed in these situations and doubtless the names of the passengers are known by someone somewhere.
