Fadamor, it's common sense of the world that genteel, highly-civilised USA is diametric opposite of violent Japanese, isn't it ? Americans, especially the marines, are probably as genteel as Koreans, Chinese, etc. That's why every japanese parents, especially those with teenage daughters, envy the people of Okinawa, Iwakuni, etc. Similar to the fact that every Tokyoites dream of raising their kids in Roppongi, Kabukicho/Okubo (Korean town), Ikebukuro (chinese area), etc.

anyway, highly civilised Americans, especially american marines, are known for their low crime rates, at least by Japanese standard. It must be so frightening for you to live in (or visit) such a volent country like japan.

"The area around the existing bases was for the large part a number of tiny villages and farm land. Yes the people built their houses and schools around the bases,.... "

and, many of these Okinawans (and their ancestors) used to live in the big spaces confiscated by Americans, didn't they? They were forced to leave their ancestral houses/villages as a result of the American destruction/confiscation in/after 1945. It's just natural that they wanted to build their new houses near their ancestral villages even if they had been bulldozed and transformed into american military bases.

smithinjapan, why do you think Okinawan people's 祖国復帰 (back to the motherland) campaigns under the American occupation was so intense ? (and, why do you continue to be in japan ? I guess it would be much better for you to go back to your beloved Korea where American soldiers are loved so much.)

it's true that japan is still the world's top creditor nation (holding huge NET external assets worth trillions of dollars/euros), but i guess it's mostly bonds, stocks and production facilities rather than real estate.

I see. Step by step. The rest of Okinawa island chains should be reverted to the great motherland as the Ryukyu Autonomous Region of China ? And, Koreans have a much longer, uninterrupted history as a much more faithful tributary vassal of China, aren't they? So, even more qualified to be new Autonomous Region of China ?

yosun, most of the Japanese, including myself, will be glad to share (or even offer completely) the Senkaku islands witth (to) the Taiwanese people, if we feel Taiwan would consolidate its independent status in the years to come, because it's truism for us that truly independent Taiwan is our best friend in East Asia. There is firm consensus among the japanese at large that we should respect the Taiwanese people's fishing rights in the area, and solve the issue as early as possible. The Japanese perceptions of the Taiwanese (as distinct from mainlanders) have been always really, really good. No argument about it. (But the international/regional/domestic politics are complicated, aren't they?)

yosun, as you know, the whole of Ryukyu (Okinawa) island chains actually belong to China, while Tsushima islands are Koreans'. The more serious question would be who is the rightful owner of Manchuria, isn't it ? (at least according to my korean pals).

JeffLee, it's really, really odd.

So, when you stayed in the Okubo/Kabukichi-cho red-light district in 1986, you didn't notice thousands of korean women working for the korean "business" owners around there ? Sad reality.
