"American ideas and technological innovation are still the envy of the world."

Especially innovation that relates to Shock & Awe and other kool stuff. :-) That's why Iran is probably trying to get ahold of some of that good stuff -- like nukes -- also invented in the USA. :-)

"Sarge: If you consider immaterial things (such as ideas) exportable, doubling exports will more than easy... So far my computer is made in China... My softs are mostly written outside US."

Well at least the USA is the world's BEST exporter of weaponry/armaments. Yeah, go America go!! Is this not good for the US economy? Milk that MIC (Military Industrial Complex) to the bones. The profits they make will be evenly redistributed in the economy -- me thinks. Nah, maybe not. :-)

BTW, Obama should come back to his father's homeland here in Kenya (specifically Nyanza area of Western Kenya) and he will realize that Kenya does NOT want to import more goods from the West. Instead, they want to EXPORT more agricultural produce, finished goods based on the country's plentiful raw materials, fish, more tourism to see lions, giraffes, elephants, rhinos, etc. and more Business Process Outsourcing. I imagine other developing countries in Africa (and around the world) are looking to do the same thing too.

This thing called TRADE (with surpluses & deficits) can be a very tricky thing. In the end, I think it's better for all countries to try as much to meet their own domestic demands and then IMPORT whatever else is absolutely necessary. One other thing...Africa does NOT want Monsanto's over-priced genetically modified seeds that locks in farmers and destroys their land. Send those exports some where else -- please.

I must concur: The US makes excellent planes. I came to East Africa from Canada via Amsterdam on a sleek, beautiful Boeing 777 owned by KLM. That plane has soooo many kool features, and I just felt safe in it. I'd rather walk if I had to fly a Soviet jet or something "made to fly" from China. Long live Boeing. :-)

This is definitely embarrassing for China. With a cool $1.5 Trillion US in the bank from trade surpluses, you'd think its citizens would want to stay at "home" and get a better job...considering how badly the US is going down the tube from an economic standpoint.

And when is France going to return the BILLIONS that Mobutu Sese Seko, Congo's long time despot (er dictator), left in its bank vaults?? The utter hypocrisy of the Frenchies. Perhaps Congo should indict some of their leaders for illegal & destabilizing activities that lead to the plunder of Congo's resources and millions dead. Again, Noriega was a patsy...a fall guy. I'm sure he did a lot of crap while in power...but his bosses in Washington didn't care back then.

"LIBERTAS, Excellent post! I'm not a religious person in the least and I couldn't give a damn about religion, but it's amazing how Israel uses that anti-semite line to the max -- literally. And let's remember, Persians (Iranians) are NOT Arabs. They have a very rich culture and history...more than even America's. But unfortunately the mullahs in Iran have misrepresented the entire population with their hardline fanatic politics. If Iran gets a REAL democracy overnight and still wishes to build their nuclear power plant, then it's no business of the US or Israel if that's what the PEOPLE want.

I'd still buy a Toyota today!!! Like I've said before, show me another automaker (besides Honda) whose cars aren't going to crap out on you in the cold harsh winter of Canada because of engine failure? I always see GM, Fords, Chrysler and others out of commission in these types of scenarios. And what about under body rust protection? This is why I'm sticking with Japanese vehicles.

But beyond all this we keep reading that men are turning more and more to this kind of service, virtual girlfriends and porn for their romantic and sexual outlet. Meanwhile women are laboring under unrealistic expectations, dropping guys all together or having dysfunctional sexual relationships with partners. How does any of this read as healthy?

I agree 100%. What happened to the days of going out chasing skirts (courting, chatting em up, meeting them at the mall, in the library, in the park, at the gym, at the beach, rollerblading, on campus in a social setting)?? Could this be the fallout from Japan's high tech culture of video games et al? Just a thought.

Posted in: Growing number of men have no close friends See in context

He was an introverted child and had no close friends at all until college—golden years, but they soon end and college friends are easily lost sight of. Then came work, with its daily grind that leaves little time for anything else. A series of transfers in rapid succession left him a perpetual stranger. He married, and there was no one to invite to the wedding except relatives and a few company colleagues.

You'd have to blame parenting (or lack of parenting) on this friendless issue. I grew up in the Caribbean (Barbados) and then in Canada in the 1980s. I was always outside playing sports, going to city parks, public city gyms, etc. for as long as I can remember. We used to make huge kites and fly them over the Caribbean sea, play marbles and road tennis after school, play tag & hide & seek in large shopping malls (was fun hiding in the clothes rack in women's clothing section) in Ottawa with my grade 5 pals, and get into lots of kiddie mischief. :-) No one stayed indoors!

Perhaps it has to do with Japanese culture and their all-or-nothing focus on getting ahead in Education? I don't know. But I feel that leisure time during a child's upbringing is very IMPORTANT. As for myself, I'm very outgoing and can socialize and make friends with anybody -- in any social setting. On the other hand, I can also keep to myself without having that "need" to be "with the gang" so to speak. On the flip side, some peeps these days can't seem to handle being ALONE for any length of time. They need "to be" with their friends or some clique. Not good. I believe in a healthy balance.

When I have kids, there's gonna be no TV during their early years. I want them outside playing, keeping busy, exploring, making friends, etc. TV (er, the Idiot Box) is also another big reason why people grow up LONELY.

Could it be that since Japanese men are given preferential treatment from their parents, that this makes them feel less inclined to make friends?? Just a thought.

Why can't we have trains like this in Canada & the US?? I've always been a big fan of Japanese industrial might. As a Canadian taking a break in East Africa, it would be absolutely AMAZING to have a train network going from Eastern Canada all the way to the West coast (Vancouver, BC). It would stop off at the major cities along the way and really make Canada feel a little more connected. VIA Rail's trains are slooooooow compared to the Bullet. In Africa, I envision a train network going from East (Indian ocean coast) to West (Atlantic ocean) and connecting to major cities along the way. Imagine the economic growth. We should also have a train network going from North Africa all the way down to Capetown in South Africa -- on the East cost. Imagine how scenic this would be.

Congrats to Canada! I'm a Canadian hanging out in East Africa and I'm really impressed with the country's Olympic performance in Vancouver. However, I do feel that we should diversify our sporting options a bit. Why can't we compete with the Americans in basketball and football? I know we pride scholastic academics a lot higher than our American counterparts. But we really need to move to the next level. Ditto for soccer.

I'm from Ottawa and it's amazing the hockey network we have in Ontario: midget, peewee, Juniors, high school, etc. Why can't we do the same for basketball?? Physically, we're the same size as Americans. I don't get it. Thank goodness for Steve Nash though. But he played College ball in the US. Why don't we have great college sports??

Just my 2 cents.

I would still by a Toyota. I feel their quality and craftsmanship is still impeccable. Look at how many Celiccas, Corollas, Supra Turbos, Camrys, etc. are still on the road that were purchased 10/15/20 years ago. Try to beat that Ford, GM or Chrysler.

From reading all of these comments, it's clear that more political parties with a large fanatical membership is required to challenge the Democratic/Republican control of government and US politics in general. “Let’s not kid ourselves,” he said. “The wounds of colonization, and perhaps even worse the way in which we separated, have left traces that are still raw in the memory of Haitians.”

Wow, Nick actually knows his history!! I still have my doubts about France in some regards. On the one hand, I love their French Revolution. But on the other hand, they don't seem to like when other African colonies want to separate from the French mother ship. Oh the hypocrisy. But that's the French for ya. Right? After all, look at Chad, Central African Republic and other former French states in Africa. They are in a mess!! Heck, Rwanda has booted out the French making English the main language is government and education. That says it all.

Common sense is starting to prevail in Latin America. It's only with US drug "officials". Why? Because they traffic the damn drugs which are used to fund illegal CIA operations. Duh, it's obvious it's a cash cow that they're ADDICTED to!!!

"...Earlier this year, three former Latin American presidents known for their free-market and conservative credentials—Ernesto Zedillo of Mexico, Cesar Gaviria of Colombia and Fernando Henrique Cardoso of Brazil—said governments should seriously consider legalizing marijuana as an effective tool against murderous drug gangs.

If the war on drugs has failed, analysts say it is partly because it has been waged almost entirely as a la w-and-order issue, without understanding of how cartels work as a business..."

Aah yes, yet more wonderful fallout from the War on "Some" Drugs. It is because of people like most (or some) of YOU that puts up with this sh!t. Yes, some of you have problems with drugs being legalized, but are you fu!king insane to prefer this gory VIOLENCE over letting people have the choice to partake in their own recreational drug use?? I tell ya...most citizens in the world are frigging asses --- either too wrapped up in blinding religions who's practitioners even don't believe jack squat about.

Any time I see a society where alcohol & tobacco is legal and "some" herbal drugs are illegal, I know something fishy is going on. Furthermore, don't most of you find it odd that the police and drug cartels want the SAME THING: for "some" drugs to be ILLEGAL??? Think people think!!!

Great story!! I wish his company all the success.

Until last summer, there were only three of us and I was the only developer. I was doing sales, consulting, administration and then development from midnight to 4 a.m.

Yikes, that's crazy! Although I do admit that during the dotcom boom when I was working on an ASP/SQL Server 7 web project in Toronto, I'd get ideas to programming challenges in my sleep and wake up at 1AM -- for about 2 hours. But I don't think I'd ever do that any more. You only get one life, so relax a little. :-) However, coding can get addictive when you're in the "zone."
