Someone correct me if I'm wrong about this. As far as I know, if you are paying for a cable subscription, part of that fee is already going to NHK.

Those of you that said the police should have made the culprits clean up the mess should look at the time line. Incident occurred on May 6th. They weren't arrested until June 11. There punishment should be having to clean up the Koban everyday for the next six months.

The headline of this article doesn't quite fit what the author wrote in the contents. The Algerian hostage crisis, the ballon disaster in Egypt as well as the incident in Guam have nothing to do with the lack of "street smarts". Other than not being in those particular countries at the time, "street smarts" would have not prevented nothing what happen.

I flew the 787 on ANA from Seattle to Narita and it was the most comfortable airplane that I have ever flown on. The atmospheric pressure inside the cabin is such that the effect of "Jet Lag" was greatly reduced. Its the most technologically advanced passenger airplane ever developed. But they need to mitigated these nagging problems before they become major. Boeing outsourced the manufacturing of various parts of this aircraft to companies all over the world. That to me is the biggest mistake they made.

To Ranger_Miffy2: How is this article misleading. I'm sure the NHK reporter on the scene confirmed the fact that there were five Japanese national children who attended the school. The town where this happened is not very far from New York City where I'm sure hundreds of Japanese nationals work in various professions. They are probably the children of these Japanese.

Posted in: U.S. Navy restricts nighttime drinking by all personnel throughout Japan See in context
Sailwind: I agree with a lot of what you said. I spent 22 years on active duty and have been retired for over 30 years now. In my years on active duty I've seen the clubs on base being closed as a punitive action. I've even seen entire towns put off limits. But I never heard of any restrictions on drinking in your own home. Maybe back when you and I were on active duty the military could get away with this, but today there is an entirely different breed of person on active duty. Letters to Congress are forth coming, and you take my word for it.

How ridiculous can you get? I wonder how the Navy plans on enforcing this no drinking in your home between 10PM and 8AM policy. Maybe send the base police to everyone's home to check on them? Or maybe instituting something akin to what the Nazis and Communists governments did. Ask neighbors to spy on each other.

Lots of facts missing in this report. The report says the door was unlocked, so I assume no forced entry. Did the woman let her assailant in, or did he let himself in. I bet the PIN for the ATM card was either written on the card or it was co-located with the card.

The only reason their are now patrols on Okinawa is that even with the curfew a couple of idiots still managed to get in trouble. The mainland bases are also under curfew, but as far as I know there have been no incidents that would require patrols. This is a political football folks.

alliswellinjapan: I am going to make an assumption that you are not a baseball fan as much as your as a soccer fan. There are MLB scouts all over the world and new talent is being assessed 360 days a year. Many of the star players who participate in the WBC for their respective countries already come from MLB teams. Many baseball fans in the USA including myself are not happy with the WBC being held at the time of year that it is.

Posted in: Ichiro decides not to play in 2013 WBC See in context
The problem with the WBC is that it is held in March about the time MLB teams are finishing up spring training and getting ready for the start of the regular season. IF the WBC were to be held in late October or early November after the end of the season I think more MLB teams would be willing to allow their players to represent their respective countries. If player gets hurt during the WBC he still has a few months to recuperate prior to the start of the season. But when it is held in March an injured player could be out for a large portion of the regular season. Holding the WBC in the late fall poses a problem with finding warmer climates to play in. Australia would be a good venue as would California, Arizona, Hawaii to name a few.

Posted in: Ichiro decides not to play in 2013 WBC See in context
In ichiro's case he's at the end of his career and wants to finish it with the Yankees if possible. He doesn't need to be participating in the WBC. Darvish is being paid big money to play for the Texas Rangers and they want to protect their investment. The Rangers don't want him to run off and play in the WBC and maybe hurt his arm like Matsuzaka did back in 2009. Matsuzaka has never been the same since.

I will be very surprised if any of them receive any jail time. A reprimand maybe, that's about it. Believe me when I say that this kind of inappropriate police behavior is not limited to Japan. I lived in the Seattle area for five years where on many occasions the police reacted with excessive force for the situation at hand. In most of the cases the "good old boy network" stepped in to exonerate the officers involved. A few cases ended up in dismissal from the police force, but never was there any jail time handed out.
