“For centuries, women entering marriage in Japan have been bound by the Confucian notion of personal sacrifice for the good of the family”
In the Confucian countries like China and Korea, it’s been a centuries-old tradition that women retain their maiden names after marriage. Until the Meiji Restoration in 1868, commoners in Japan did not have surnames. Do some fact checking before writing an article.

Crime doesn’t pay, of course, but the entire retirement allowance denied just for stealing 1000 yen? The Supreme Court ruling is too harsh. The punishment far outweighs the crime.

It’s simply because Americans behave quite differently when they are in Western countries from when they are in non-Western countries.

What’s going on is not trade negotiations but an outright extortion by the world’s largest economy against the rest of the world. “Tariff revenues…to pay down the federal budget deficit “? Trump is confusing government finances with corporate and households finances. As the issuer of the US dollars, the federal government can never run out of money and government debt needs not be repaid.

“Build a relationship of trust”? It’s the US that destroyed the trust by unilaterally imposing tariffs on imports. If Akagi, as a representative of a vassal state, is going to the master country to offer tributes to gain favorable treatment, don’t go.

The U.S. pays no rent, nothing at all, to use their bases in Japan as well as receiving billions of yen of subsidies to pay utility bills. Moreover by imposing the pacifist constitution on Japan that severely restricts the country’s defense capabilities, the U.S. has been completely free of military threat from the former enemy for 80 years. A “wonderful deal “ indeed,

The high court judges are pretty selective in their interpretation of the Constitution.
