I doubt he'll last long enough to make that visit to Yasukuni that he'd just love to make.

Posted in: Kyoto team suspends Romania from carbon market See in context

Trading in carbon credits is unfortunately just an opportunity for banksters and embezzlers to get rich. It does nothing to actually cut emissions.

What an incredibly biased and one-sided presentation from a pro-nuclear hardliner.

I don’t understand Japanese people.

That much is abundantly clear.

Posted in: Anger mounts in tsunami-hit areas over political power games See in context

The Japanese people manufactured the political impasse, by beating up on the DPJ last summer for no good reason. And then they bitch about it, but don't point the finger where it belongs, at the totally selfish machinations of the LDP and Komeito. If they keep leaving it to the over 60s to vote they'll end up with more of the same.

Posted in: Kan resigns; says he did all he could, given difficulties he faced See in context

@ssway

Your suggestion that Kan's visit stopped Tepco venting and preventing the explosion is absurd - pure LDP propaganda. TEPCO is the only one to blame for their mishandling of the situation, including their turning off the emergency core cooling system.

Posted in: Kan resigns; says he did all he could, given difficulties he faced See in context

You couldn't blame him if he takes a bit of a break next, but I'm hoping that he continues to lead the push for an alternative energy future for Japan and to fight the good fight against oyabun Ozawa and the useless Hatoyama.

Ya gotta love JT. Hundreds of comments about the crime and entertainment stories, but noone has got anything to say on the topic of the world sliding in fits and starts into the biggest economic downturn in recorded history.

Posted in: Politicians in Japan are divided over whether to hike taxes to finance reconstruction efforts or take steps first to spur economic growth and then use that as an engine for reconstruction. What is you See in context

Just today, we read about Tokyo Education Board members who get close to half a million yen a month to turn up to a 1 or 2 hour meeting to discuss cutting the pay of teachers who've been bad and such. Only thing is, they still get paid even if they can't be bothered to turn up. That's more than 5 million a year they get for doing close to nothing. Cut the pay of all these useless mumbling chair warmers by 80%, and then CUT income tax rates across the board to stimulate the economy.

Hmm, died in July he said. The original report said she's been missing since the start of the year, and that her body was already partly reduced to a skeleton. Seems he's been driving her around dead for ages, hidden under a coat, and he ran out of gas at the Hachiman and flattened the battery trying to get the car started then legged it.

Standard Sunni Islam: men can have up to 4 wives, if they can afford them, and can divorce them basically at will. Women have to petition a shariah court, but this is easier than in some other Islamic countries.

Modern america specialises in combining porn with everything - for profit. Home of pole dancing, mud wrestling and the wet T-shirt contest. And there's always a willing audience. Last week the story was pay-per-view to watch skimpily-attired big breasted girls play basketball.

Posted in: In what technological or scientific fields is Japan still ahead of the rest of the world? See in context

They seem to be doing well in areas of stem cell research. Definitely not robotics, unless you mean robot as toys. Most Japanese robots are remote controlled anyway.

Posted in: Noda warns against yen's rise See in context

Talking up the prospect of intervention is a strategy to get some limited relief without having to spend trillions. But the recent intervention, and any repeat of it, is a futile waste of reserves that are better spent on rebuilding Tohoku. The dollar will continue to slump, and so the Yen will appear to rise, though its dropped vs EUR and CHF recently.

Posted in: Kaieda says he'll run in DPJ presidential election See in context

Kaieda is a stooge for the nuclear industry. He sacked some nuclear heads but allowed them to choose their own replacements.

Maehara's scandal is nothing - he shouldn't have resigned in the first place.

Ozawa - now there's a real scandal. The master of under-the-table bribes should commit seppuku.

If only. He's not going to jail if he returns to Bangkok, his sister would pardon him in a flash. But he's too smart to go back just yet - he still has to wait a few months while she consolidates her hold on power.

Noda isn't a done deal by any means. Perhaps Maehara will run. I'll be happy to see anyone who isn't in debt to Ozawa and Hatoyama get the job.
