Mick looks 80 anyway - even with that “hair”(?)

Wonder how he’d look without it.

I wonder, if a woman punched a man in the face and broke his cheek bone would it get a news headline?

What other activities would you suggest at that “honorable age”?

Do you know when you see silly English mistakes in Japan on shops or advertising? This is of the same mentality. They could easily have gotten the help of any native English speaker - you know, anyone walking down the street - and hire their help. But they are old, xenophobic, nationalist Japanese businessmen who obviously can’t speak English. So this is all they could stupidly think up. Really insulting to the Japanese public to assume they’ll fall for such simple-mindedness.

Which religions would be okay in Japan? I mean, aside from direct involvement with political leaders.

Thanks for the stats on green space, with Tokyo a lowly 7.4% green space. Even that much was likely due to international pressure to green up, being a major world city. Tokyo used to be much worse decades ago. And grim as things are, still better than Osaka. Wonder about Osaka’s stats on green space. Maybe 2-3%?

Reading these comments on here is like reading one comment over and over. This is like the hate bait stories that appear regularly. Why bother yourselves about him? That’s just giving him publicity and then more people will look at his videos. Ignore him.

Posted in: For filmmakers, ‘Oppenheimer’s’ $900 mil-plus haul is an important moment for Hollywood and theaters See in context

Is the reason it’s not playing in Japan:

1) too sensitive an issue yet for a country that was the victim of Oppenheimer’s creation?

2) would not be a box-office success here - mainly for reasons related to #1 above?

In either case, that does not make Japan’s position on the film look very good. I’m in full awareness over the horror of the bombs. But the fact, as I understand it, is there was a race among nations to develop the bomb. Japan was in that race as well, but was too slow and non-committal. This is a movie about the person who made that historically terrible achievement. One should be able to view that objectively.

By the way, a lot of people in Japan are surprised when they are told that in other countries you can be arrested for public displays of your drunkenness. Gee.

Oh, I get it. I guess they think a salaryman should be given the right to make life miserable for others because of their slave-like dedication to the workplace. Gotcha.

Well, what exactly can they do anyway? Does “intervention” mean buying up yen with dollars? How long would that work?

Posted in: Swarms of tourists causing crisis for Mount Fuji See in context

Just checked temperature difference between Tokyo at Mt. Fuji summit.

At 9:00 AM today, Tokyo is 30C ( 86F). On the Mt. Fuji summit, it’s 9C ( 48F). That’s a big difference. But for a lot of western tourists, they don’t care. They like shorts and T-shirts anyway. But use JMA ( Japan Meteorological) site. Don’t depend on some daffy ( “at this time of year in” blah blah) international weather site.

Posted in: Swarms of tourists causing crisis for Mount Fuji See in context

Excuse my ignorance on the subject.

”Bullet-climbing”. You mean people climb in the dark night hours to get to the top before sunrise? Do they camp or something at the fifth station, or - OMG - go right from the bottom to the top?

Western travellers: For many, if there’s a mountain they just gotta climb it. Even if much more beautiful from a distance, they don’t care.

I don’t want to sound like a pessimist, but if people on here know of altercations between “foreigners” and Japanese, I’d like to hear of them. Just interested. Must be quite a few by now.

It’s nice to be enthusiastic about things, but Japan’s fascination with the idea of “things” being better than humans is kind of scary ( as well as philosophically shallow).

I just checked CNN to see if they are headlining this incident. But they aren’t. And CNN usually likes to fan the flames when there’s a racial incident. But nothing at the moment. However, JT seems very interested in this, even if crimes in American cities are usually ignored by them.

Re: parity. That’s right, exactly.

Also, if people really want to have parity in movies, just cast more women as murderous villains in action movies. How about that?

Posted in: Trains, flights canceled as typhoon rips across western Japan See in context

“Another storm in a teacup”

Re: “Elaborate please” comment.

To elaborate for the commenter, I’d assume they mean another hyped up typhoon event, the likes of which have almost never amounted to much over the past 60 years. There were a couple scary ones about five years ago, one of which caused big problems for Kansai International Airport, but no comparison to those old time Japan. Basically, typhoons in modern day Japan are hugely over-hyped, and are something to get excited about for people who need something to get excited about.

Posted in: Western, central Japan brace as typhoon expected to make landfall Tuesday See in context

I’m happy to see the typhoon increasingly be called by its name, Lan. All over the world, typhoons, hurricanes, cyclones ( same storm ) are named. As far as I know, only Japan has this dry number system, like a science laboratory. No surprise.

Yes, I remember Typhoon Jebi in 2018, I believe ( referred to as 20 in Japan that year). That was very rough in Kansai. Hope that doesn’t happen again.

“What are his motives?”

Being crazy and angry. Okay?

People feel so much better if there’s a motive. Because if the world is crazy, then they feel crazy. Sorry to disappoint you.

Guy probably reading the news about other angry stabbings and decided that fits his situation. And that’s all.
