Posted in: The gender code: Will women program the future? See in context

So a lot of schools around the world are teaching coding as a curriculum class from grade school. I wonder if doing this in Japan and using it as a driver for better English education could work. Worth a shot since nothing else is working, and at the same time it's a good idea to get the whole population fluent in the most important skill in the world, so it'll still have a positive effect even if English levels don't increase much.

I've been to many of these places and would put Singapore at #1, or maybe #2 since the heat can be overbearing all year. I'd still put Tokyo in top 5; most people nay-saying are just unhappy with their place of employment. But yeah, Portland at #2??? A homeless-ridden, drugged out (yet still expensive) hippy hell hole like that shouldn't even be on the list anywhere. So yeah, not a very believeable list regardless of your opinions of Tokyo.

Wouldn't pay that price, but I'd give it a go if offered. Maybe with some of that colored cheesecake.

Every time I see the acronym for his overly promoted video I initially think it's some sort of diagnostic exam for an STD or something. Sort of appropriate I suppose.

As usual, lots of negative sentiment toward the Man..Drones present a danger to helicopters and planes, as well as pedestrians. It's common sense they should be closely regulated - or do you want a news story about a hapless drone pilot bringing down a heli onto the busy streets of Tokyo? Not to mention, civilians are also capable of spying and peeping.

Same, I pay extra for ANA as well, and often it's the same price even as the crap options. ANA is also the only airline that upgrades me to biz class for free from time to time.

I feel half my posts here are praise for ANA, but they're pretty rad.

Looks like Luddite and I are the only sensible ones who don't want AirBnB. Like Luddite said, it turns areas to hell, and you can bet it would be 10 times worse with olympic guests. I'm not about to put up with the noise, litter, and possible robbery from sketchy airbnbers who can't/won't put up for regular accommodations. Keep silly western concepts like that out of Japan, please.

Joe, was just talking about this kind of subject with the boss earlier, how internet and social media have aided in the super coddling of the younger millennials and whatever the hell we're calling the next generations. You can see its effects in the workplace too - these kids aren't nearly as sharp or capable of critical thinking as their superiors (and have no emotional intelligence) due to being digitally connected from day one and having everything conveniently accessible and given to them. And yet they expect to be rewarded just for showing up. Really makes me worry about the future of the world economy - just another reason automation of not just manual labor, but also white collar jobs, is a good thing.

Even if the pay we're competitive with the likes of an AI software engineer I still couldn't take such work..Speaking of which, it'll be great when automation is advanced enough to hit that industry as well.

Foreign execs are expensive. At my last company (Japanese) the western BoD members were all paid more than the CEO himself, but I suppose it's necessary to get them to sign up, even tho if you're already making millions what's making a couple mil less for a couple years.

Yoichi at that price? Wow. That's one of my faves. Reminds me of how scotch has been soaring in Japan too..Bottle of ardbeg corryvreckan (my fav widely available scotch) was around 4,500 jpy 3-4 years ago, now it's twice that.

My personal Japanese bottle of choice is suntory Hakushu; very high quality and just like a quality single malt scotch, but has its own uniqueness to it with the floral pallette and slight hint of peat. Suntory coffei is good too.

if the women operate by their own will, get all the money, and get respect from society, then there is nothing wrong with prostitution.

Still better to have an employer for regulatory purposes - that's an industry where sanitation and safeguards against diseases is quite important. As individuals they wouldn't likely keep themselves checked on a very regular basis.

Posted in: Does Japan’s five-yen coin need a redesign? See in context

Please, no. I support retiring one yen coins, just as the US should retire pennies, but the 5-yen coin is so iconic, and it costs money to redesign as well. And a romaji 5 even would ruin the aesthetic.

This irks me almost as much as Japan bending to the will of ignorant sjws about the 万字 on Japanese maps. If you can't take the time to learn which coin is which, or read some history to realize the manji isn't offensive and is part of a culture that's different to your own, you should just stay home.
