Posted in: Atheists at Christmas: Eat, drink and be wary See in context

I'm an atheist. I love Christmas. I don't freak out about the religious aspect. I find it kind of strange and almost hilarious that there are atheists out there that are bothered by the religious aspect. Why don't they just remind themselves that originally (in Europe) these winter festivals were celebrated by pagans and were adopted by the church once Christianity began moving through Europe? Plus, if you harp on the Santa Claus aspect of it it becomes even less religious.

The only time church factors into my Christmas activities is if my family wants to go to Midnight Mass. Usually I find a way to avoid going (such as offering to take care of the kids at home, or I feel too tired from jet-lag, etc.). Maybe it's b/c I'm not 80 years old or something but most xmas activities where I'm from don't involve boring old church.

God, I hate coffee snobs. Yes, canned coffee is gross but it's not the end of the world. And the espresso used by Starbuck's, Seattle's Best and Tully's isn't watered down. The bigger drinks have more milk and more espresso in them. If anything they're 'milked' down but the amount of an espresso shot (from a big chain) is the same as the amount of an Illy's espresso shot. However the coffee beans themselves may be higher quality. That being said the big chains still have pleasant and enjoyable drinks. At least to those of us that aren't total snobs about useless crap such as what kind of flavored milk goes down our throats into our bellies and eventually into the sewers.

Sick. I teach 3 year olds. How can anyone raise a hand to such an innocent, helpless creature?

“It’s hard to pronounce, even for Japanese,” admits Saito.

This made me laugh. "Even for Japanese" as if they're the best in the world at pronouncing things. Oh Saito.

Illy is pretty good coffee, but what I like about Tully's and Starbucks is that I get a huge cup for what I pay for. So if the quality is only 85% (compared to Illy's 90%), I still prefer it b/c I get much more fluid that tastes just fine. Meh.

Seriously... how hard is it to get onto google and type 'greetings in japan'?

Still, I like Johnny Depp and it'd be cool to see him. Wonder if he'll come to Osaka..?

Seriously, who cares if the woman "caused" the boy to fall by shouting? I think that her shouting wouldn't have caused anyone to fall if the idiot kid hadn't been on the ledge to begin with. I don't blame the teachers, I blame the kid. 10 years old is old enough to know what is and isn't dangerous.

10 years old? He's old enough to know that it's dangerous. Survival of the fittest....

Posted in: Do it at home: Train manners in Japan See in context

I rarely wear make up and I hate for people to watch me put makeup on b/c I'm such a newb at it that I get self-conscious.

However, I see absolutely NOTHING wrong with other people putting makeup on their selves. Who cares?

And most of the time it's not dangerous. Brushes are soft, as are eyelid makeup applicators (what are they called?) and most of the eyeliners are not razor sharp pencils but have been dulled after much use.

I've come to realize that the general population is horrible at raising mentally healthy children, and this isn't just a Japan-specific issue. Unfortunately it's "inhumane" to take away a person's "right" to procreate. Personally, if it were up to me you'd have to take a test and pass exams to have a kid.

I've totally jacked seats from people on trains when they're not fast enough to get into them. Beating a salary man who more than likely sits in front of a desk all day is not a bad thing... I'm on my feet teaching for hours! Psh.

However, if there is an elderly person or a pregnant woman I will give them my seat b/c I'm a decent human being... I don't just sit there pretending not to notice them.

All famous murderers/serial killers/etc. have a female following. There are women out there that eat that crap out. So even if it's some idiot on a website pretending to be a girl is irrelevant. There are women out there that want him based solely on the fact that he's famous for killing someone. I've never understood these women and never will.

Mittsu, learn a little bit about film before you start spouting out silliness. His movies are not B-movies. Please learn what B-Movies are.

I'm excited about seeing this but it's going to have to wait until I'm in America because I'm sure the German/French scenes won't be subbed in English as the movie will obviously be subbed in Japanese. :(

This kid sounds like a pyro! ... There's no fixing that really, except to teach him to control his urges. The fact that he is 10 years old is not an excuse. I knew full and well about consequences when I was 10. Is it b/c my mother used corporal punishment? Probably. I was terrified to do anything wrong...

In any case all children should have some fear of doing bad things. He deserves to be punished and not just get a slap on the wrist b/c he's 10.

Posted in: Christmas illumination See in context

I hate Christmas in Japan... I wish they wouldn't even do these stupid illuminations.... this fake-pretend-"Christmas" crap just makes it all the more depressing when the 25th rolls around. Thank God I will be in America during Christmas this year.

It'd be a lot easier to cope w/ not having a real Christmas if they didn't flaunt this fake crap everywhere.

LoveUSA, some people use humor as a defense mechanism... it makes things seem less crappy if you can find a way to laugh about it. It's like how my abnormal psych prof would always tell us hilarious stories about his patients that were sad but at the same time hilariously entertaining.
