US automakers should swallow the cost. In fact, guzzle it down. I've worked for suppliers to the industry, and markups are absolutely obscene. No sympathy from me.

How about doing away with airbags altogether? Seems they’re much more trouble (fatal, at that) then they’re worth.

(Before anyone chimes in with “statistics” and “lives saved,” don’t. Just. Don’t. Members of my family were in the automotive-body-repair business for some 30 years. They and I saw more instances of airbag FAILURE than success, with the expected injuries. The damnfool thing is a flawed idea that should be eliminated. PERIOD. Seatbelts are proven to be much safer.)

Now India can have its own set of disasters.*

Indeed. As if Bhopal wasn’t enough. :(

While I'll respect an opinion opposite my own (and expect the same in return; we can agree to disagree), there was another Presidential candidate who was considered unqualified, and he was given a chance by those of us who did not vote for him.

TWICE.

Unnecessary killing of whales (which I don’t condone, by the way) aside…it’s all fun and games until firearms are whipped out and shooting starts.

In about 263 years, the satellite will return as "H'tomi." ("Star Trek: The Motion Picture" reference.)

Given his advocacy for LGBT causes, it's interesting that Mr. Takei is disappointed in this.

A nation held hostage.

No. No one is forcing anyone to purchase or use a firearm in the US. Those who feel it necessary to have one should have the freedom and opportunity to do so. That a firearm is felt necessary for one’s safety speaks to the base actions of humanity, and to the failure of the criminal-justice system.

What entrenched guns in American culture was Charlton Heston's "Cold Dead Hands" speech.

No. Firearms were entrenched in American culture long before Mr. Heston was even born.

Posted in: 8 automakers recall over 12 mil vehicles in U.S. for Takata air bags See in context

All airbags should be outlawed and removed. They add cost to already-too-expensive vehicles, have proven to be not 100% reliable, and are getting deadlier each generation. GET. RID. OF. THEM. NOW.

I cannot fathom this. I lost my mother when I was 13; I would have loved to have her in my life when I was 49. I'm 52 now. :(

Posted in: Honda to recall 20 million more Takata air bags: Nikkei See in context

Personally, I think that airbags should be outlawed completely. They add to a vehicle's price, aren't as reliable as some would want to believe (I've worked in the auto-body business and have seen vehicles in which the things should have deployed, but didn't), and when they do deploy, are proving time and again to be injurious if not outright deadly.

Get rid of them. Seatbelts are much more reliable.

I own an older Nissan Pathfinder, and have nothing but praise for its durability. The news of this recall will not affect my opinion of Nissan, as they're on top of the problem.
