Posted in: Man arrested after stabbing 17-year-old daughter with sword See in context

"the incident occurred just before 2 a.m., as the "17-year-old daughter" was trying to leave the house"

going out kinds late...

Uh, she was probably trying to get out of the house because her father was ...oh, I don't know... CHASING HER WITH A SWORD!

Posted in: Considering Japan has so many typhoons, why are there still so many roadside utility poles? Is it feasible to bury them underground? See in context

Burying them underground is very costly and problemmatic due to the other services that are already buried. But it is doable if there is the will and the money....

The bills are not old as in ancient, they are Fukuzawa Yukichis. The more faded ones may only fetch 50% or 25% of face value.

TV news also reported that two suspects held on to him for 10 minutes before the oldest suspect pushed them out of the way, making the victim fall so I'm sure his arms were too tired to swim effectively.

Posted in: Tabloid dissects Halloween's 'unnatural popularity' See in context

“If you look at it from another perspective, Halloween’s popularity in Japan may reflect the prescience that the world is getting worse and worse,” Kaku points out.

Uh, no. It's just a fun way to express your creativity and enjoy indulging yourself...Ever heard of Cos-play? I predicted Halloween's popularity in Japan years ago when I saw how popular Cos-play had become. With hundreds of young people gathering in Yoyogi to show off their hand-made costumes...it was obvious that Halloween would be a perfect fit. Halloween's popularity in Japan (as elsewhere) is driven by young people's exuberance and appetite for play...the obtuseness of some Japanese pundits never ceases to amaze me...

Posted in: Keith Richards belittles rap, metal See in context

I don't like Rap/Hip Hop because of it's lack of harmonies, lack of intelligent subject-matter, glorification of disrespectful behavior, and because it too often takes the easy way out by sampling REAL music and passing it off as its own.

Metallica and Black Sabbath are hardly the end-all, be-all of Metal, Keith's comment can hardly be characterized as an indictment of that musical genre as a whole. Personally, I think he's full of it...and full of himself.

In the Metal genre, I like a few bands. The best Metal, IMHO, tells a story or relates an experience/emotion...sometimes in a graphic or vulgar way, but always for the purpose of "painting" the story. I'll take Iron Maiden (Book of Souls! Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner! Revelations! Two Minutes to Midnight!) over the Stones, any day!

The article doesn't mention the conversation the girl had with friends via Line. The girl ask one friend if she could stay at the friend's house that night, but was turned down because the friend had to do something with his/her family early the next morning. So the girl said she was going to go hang out in nearby Kyoto(!!) . The girl also indicated she was not planning to return home(i.e. she was running away from home). There's a lot more to this story, folks!

That is the problem with this society, people are to afraid or "proud" to ask for help, even from their own family members because they don't want to be a "burden".

Killing our "loved ones", whether requested or not, is no way to run a civilization!

Funny how depicting the face of Mohammed is "offensive" idolatry, but taking his name in vain and acting as if they ARE Mohammed by killing people is somehow okay with them. I would say Muslims are the biggest idolators (and therefore blasphemers) on the face of the earth because they presume to act on his behalf.

Fine. No pictures of Mohammed...But I don't hear anything against creating depictions of Allah, so I guess those are fair game, huh? Yes!
