It was a starvation food introduced after WWII. The fond memories senior citizen have is of being fed - period. Of course having food beats starving. And having meat trumps soy & crickets.

250m tall wind turbines were around before the steam engine? School teachers wept.

School teachers are last people you should be learning from.

How much energy does it take to make the concrete and steel to construct these monstrositites? How much electricity do they produce when the wind doesn't blow? How about when typhoons hit and they have to be locked lest they tear themselves apart? How much lubricating oil is used? How often is it changed? How many rare earth minerals are used? How often do the turbine blades need replacing? What is the toll in dead birds of prey? Can you answer even one of these questions?

In his statement after release from custody in France, Pavel Durov wrote:

All of that does not mean Telegram is perfect. Even the fact that authorities could be confused by where to send requests is something that we should improve. But the claims in some media that Telegram is some sort of anarchic paradise are absolutely untrue. We take down millions of harmful posts and channels every day. We publish daily transparency reports. We have direct hotlines with NGOs to process urgent moderation requests faster.

> However, we hear voices saying that it’s not enough. Telegram’s abrupt increase in user count to 950M caused growing pains that made it easier for criminals to abuse our platform. That’s why I made it my personal goal to ensure we significantly improve things in this regard. We’ve already started that process internally, and I will share more details on our progress with you very soon.

> I hope that the events of August will result in making Telegram — and the social networking industry as a whole — safer and stronger.

There should be a way for Korean authorities to contact Telegram to have the content taken down. That would be the logical way to tackle the problem. Have a hotline set up for these channels to be taken down as soon as they're discovered. I'm the government of Korea would be able to negotiate such a hotline, and set up a special police section to monitor Telegram for these obscene channels.

The underwater eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano on Jan. 15, 2022, sent 146 teragrams of water vapor into the stratosphere, four times more than Mount Pinatubo in 1991. This could affect atmospheric chemistry, ozone depletion, and surface temperature for several years.

We're warming slowly, at a cold time in the planet's history, where far more people die of cold than of heat, and where we're safer from both heat and cold because of energy from fossil fuels.

He and his crew were the only ones to do anything about Japan hunting whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. It's one thing to do whaling in your own country's coastal waters and EEZ, quite another to use the scientific research trope to hunt there.

If they could only manage to punish drivers for those same infractions. Here on Okinawa, we have double the drink drive rate the rest of the country does, and that is with extremely few check stops. And everyone uses their phones while driving. Studies have shown that phone users on the road have the same impairment drunk drivers do. High school and college students often ride bikes recklessly, but it's not due to intoxication or phone use. And they are a drop in the bucket compared with all types of impaired drivers.

Summer is hot. Some are hotter than others. Some are a bit longer or shorter. Sometimes we have tornadoes and typhoons, sometimes not. Some years it rains more and in others less.

Heatstroke can be prevented by taking sensible precautions. Like keeping hydrated, taking electrolytes, wearing wide-brimmed hats and taking occasional breaks out of the sun.

It's funny seeing this right before harvest. As if everyone forgot the shinmai will be in in about a month. For some reason this sort of thing gets hyped for all kinds of things. The dam reservoirs being low in Okinawa right before monsoon season starts, it being hot in summer, there being wild animals in nature.

I read another site's story about the same topic. It stated that even if every tourist ate rice at three meals a day (an unusual occurrence) it would only account for 0.5% of total rice consumption in Japan. So the rising tourism is not the issue.
