Only with smartphones, sign of the times.

Let's all comment on how tired we are of people commenting on news!

Posted in: Review: Google laptop impresses, but don't try it offline See in context

In the olden days, we would call it a thin client: a machine that serves as a terminal, while the actual computing happens across a network connection.

I'm not paying $999 for a thin client, if I can get an autonomous machine for less.

"Precious", "Supersize me" and "Poltergeist". I saw the last one as a kid.

Posted in: 'Englishisation' - Is it working? See in context

We didn't have this problem where I come from, because we never forced it and never called it "Englishization". If it sounds like a disease, of course people will avoid it.

@fxgai AGREED. The fashion to make an app for any simple task is getting out of control. I'll make that my first complaint to McD.

Posted in: Abe's robot panel aims to give drone industry an edge See in context

I hope the hentai chikan crowd doesn't get their hands on drones. Give it one case of a camera drone over an outdoor onsen and all drones will be declared illegal in Japan, or required to make beeping sounds.

Posted in: Osaka railway creates superhero to attract foreign tourists See in context

As a foreigner, watching this movie, I felt the need to retract and contract. It seemed like the message was obstructed by the way the film was constructed. I found the soundtrack distracting, acting unattractive and the abstract story protracting needlessly. I hate to detract from their effort, but I did not feel attracted.

Posted in: Google selling wireless plans to get more people online See in context

"Pichai downplayed the competitive threat that Google might pose."

This is normal Google's strategy. They're downplaying their role in all markets they enter. Always pretending to be the underdog and just biting a small share of the pie. Just a search engine. It's all for the search. Ads? Yes, but only the on-line ads. Not a player in the advertising market. Phones? Nope, just giving hints to manufacturers. We're not here to start a fight. Just looking around.

Posted in: Fear of missing out drives Internet addiction in Japan See in context

There are undoubtedly cool comments about it, like: "Wow, nice fish!" or "Wow, I love fish!" You wouldn't want someone to miss all that, would you?

JT readers are looking at a picture of a college dude looking at a picture of a fish. There are some comments like "Life in Japan has even less quality to offer than in the rest of the world." and "It's a Japanese society thing" and "Wow, this is so meta." Are they missing out on something?

Wow, this is so meta.

Posted in: 12-year-old idol singer in hospital after inhaling helium on TV Asahi program See in context

Helium is not toxic and doesn't cause any harm by itself. Oxygen deprivation is the dangerous thing. One helium balloon will change your voice. Breathe some air before you try the next one and you're fine.

It seems the girl was especially sensitive to lack of air, but that's no excuse for the show producers. If the label said "adults only", then it's on them.

I liked TMNT when I was 10, loved the movie that came out then (being the intended audience). I'm a bit apprehensive about this one. The faces on the Turtles... a bit on the wrong side of the uncanny valley.

Well, it's unlikely that they cross the streams.

@donkusai, there ARE indie movies. You just don't see their posters, or trailers, or interviews with the cast, or huge opening nights etc.

Posted in: It's a hoot hanging out with owls at this Tokyo cafe See in context

Expectation: moody atmosphere, exquisite coffee and a nice sofa next to a bookshelf full of Agatha Christie novels. Pet owl sleeping perched at the bar, where the mysterious owner is shining silverware.

Reality: crummy shop with a plastic fence. Christmas lights and paper cutouts amateurishly plastered on the walls. High entry fee and long line to take a selfie with some tortured-looking birds.
