The myth of Japanese women being the overly caring and family minded female is a myth. Japanese men now sense that and have lost interest in this present day fake cosmetic ornamented leeches who prey on men to make their life richer. I am not pushing my sons to get married and on the contrary discourage them for any permanent relationship. Even the parents are not pushing their sons to get married here.

I am recommending that all these comments posted in Japan Today be preserved so that readers don't have to post them over and over again whenever this happens in the USA. Just click and automatically the posts appear and will save everyone lots of time.

Naturally since no action or law will ever be passed to remedy this gun sickness it will happen again and again with every American hoping "not in my backyard" or worse yet, "not to my family".

What is wrong with "dynasties" or succession of heirs is that each one tries to outdo each other and wants to get out of the shadows of their family predecessor. We see this with Abe through his grandfather and father and also with George Bush jr.in the Bush dynasty.

Today, Americans certainly cannot go around knocking third world countries for the succession of puppet dictators since they are leading the game now.

I predict these type of domestic violence and killings will increase as the population gets older. With the decreasing population this means no grandchildren to keep the grandparents busy and happy. Just the two grandfather and grandmother, day after day , means animosity and bickering intensifies. I've seen my share. I call it "second menopause".

Not very amusing and very frustrating for school teachers. Also this trend will affect the character and actions in later life.

We are already beginning to see the effects of overuse when these kids get married and try to run a family. Their tendency to use physical or verbal abuse comes from their limited knowledge of social contacts.

Taiwan recently put into law that internet devices must be kept out of infants hands. Can't they invoke some kind of law to change this trend of overuse with Japanese kids? Every Tom and Dick knows the harm this can cause to the brains and future of these students and yet the government does nothing about it. Is it up to each individual family or school? When is the Japanese government going to act and put a stop to this nosense?

Posted in: Narita to establish 'fast lane' for passengers needing to be out of airport quickly See in context

Narita transport authorities should focus more on helping passengers move faster and easier from Terminal One to Terminal Two. Many tourist and regular passenger trips do not terminate in Narita and pity those who have to catch a connecting flight departing from the other terminal. I've helped many foreign passengers with several luggages and mothers with babies on and off these old unreliable shuttle buses. Cold and damp outside the terminal is worsen by the waiting outside for the shuttle buses and hoards of people waiting in line. Can't something be done? I've seen much better terminal transfers than the one at Narita. Nagoya had a similar situation 30 years ago but Chubu has really advanced while Narita is still no different.

Yes I'm sure that Japanese families with overweight kids are thankful too and would love to have you and your family join them. I'm sure you can easily afford to detach from your familiar surroundings and extended family relations both emotionally and fanancially and move away so easily.

Posted in: What do you think of the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) program? See in context

Some Japanese school administers have clearly noticed the ineffectiveness of the JET teachers due to various factors including having degrees that have nothing to do with English/education and placing them under non English speaking Japanese teachers.

Whatever the reason the fact is that our Japanese high schoolers continue to graduate without being able to speak or understand English. The whole program is a charade set up by Japanese bureaucrats in the Foreign Ministry and their embassy in Washington.

Mayor Hashimoto, upon his election as governor of Osaka, immediately stopped the yearly donation of 200 million yen to CLAIR, the organization set up to oversee this JET program. It seems that for many years Osaka was donating this amount in return for CLAIR Headquarters in New York taking in Osaka government employees for a year.

Also CLAIR is headed by former Foreign Ministry officials who are rewarded with this Amakudari posts. Normally a retired Japanese ambassador to the US gets to head the agency and recently they have taken upon themselves to arrange and designate sister city relationships with cities and towns abroad. Naturally the promise that Japanese cities and towns forming a sister city relationship would get some sort of "subsidy" assistance has long decipated along with the majority of the sister city relations.

The only one I am aware of that enjoys a real sister city relationship is St. Paul City, MN and Nagasaki due to assistance from churches after the atom bombing.

This article reminds me of a lady from Minnesota touring our high school. Nature called her and we together with the principal and other visitors waited a while before we started getting worried to her absence. Schools in those days were all Japanese styles and this lady, a overweight individual, apparently could not get up after squatting so long. She was too embarrassed to call for help but got it when the president's secretary found out she needed help in getting her balance back. The school after that incident had a western toilet installed for visitors. In conclusion many students today would not know how to use a traditional Japanese toilet either.

I'm curious to what he will be doing after all this. After all everyone recognizes him so might as well become a "talento" just like the rest of "has-beens" in Japan. He could do re-runs of his cry baby routine and it should perk up a lot of depressed Japanese youngsters and middle age people. Of course the older generation will either find him amusing or plain disgusting.

With all the university graduates employed in the national and local government offices I can assure you all that your opinions and ideas will not be heard because even though the many employees are aware of the many tourism discrepancies and inconveniences there is absolutely no way for anyone to penetrate the walls of silence and harmony within the public offices. That's one of the reasons for much drinking and depression amongst the workers.

No incentives, no rewards and only scolding awaits a young employee willing to say anything. This atmosphere prevails all over Japan and I pity and caution anyJapanese who have studied abroad and returned and tried to upgrade things to the international standards.

Posted in: Gov't cuts budget for Okinawan economic development See in context

Steve F. -Here is my comment on your statement "boondoggles like the OIST "technology incubator" that result from the wet dreams of bureaucrats with unlimited budgets."

Naturally the newly compiled Okinawa budget money given to OIST is equivalent to 10% of the total "ik-katsu-kofukin" which in my personal translation is "sympathy stimulus" money for Okinawa pref.and local city/town/village governments for putting up with the US military bases. That's a lot of cash going to this graduate school that no one knows anything about. Funny thing is that Okinawans do not know the purpose or functions of this so called "World's Number One Graduate School" by the national government and I suppose do not care or even know the reason why so much of their annual prefectural budget is being alloted to this organization. National universities throughout Japan are very angry with the pork-barrel money going to this school while they have been designated as "independent school corporations" which actually means limited funding. The national University of Ryukyus on Okinawa looks like "south central" Los Angeles when compared with the campus of OIST and the view of the East China Sea from OIST should belong a 5 star hotel.

For your information, however, the origins/idea behind the graduate school actually do not belong to any Japanese politician. A Chinese, now American citizen, a graduate from MIT and a graduate of a now defunct international high school on Okinawa was responsible for putting this irresponsible idea into the head of a politician heading the Okinawa Development Cabinet post from days gone by. The continued funding for this "no one knows the purpose of this school" goes on due to the persistence and presence of this former cabinet minister. Let's say the Okinawans are getting robbed right under their noses..but who's to blame?

Posted in: Gov't cuts budget for Okinawan economic development See in context

Cabinet Secretary Suga quotes "He said there had been a substantial sum unused in previous years’ budgets for Okinawa."

Many unselfish nonprofit organizations on Okinawa have closed their doors due to the traditional mindset of the "Okinawa Kingdom Mentality" wherein only companies and individuals with connections to the ruling party are heard when setting yearly budgets. The bureaucracy mindset on Okinawa restricts new ideas and innovations and thus the exodus of "brains" from Okinawa to mainland Japan and abroad. The Okinawans are certainly not using their money correctly and many are caving in to mainland companies who set up shops in Naha overnight to take advantage of the money alloted to the prefecture to construct unneeded or overly extravagant infrastructures (ex: Mabuni Peace Archives, Okinawa Archives, Pref. Museum, Pref.Capital building, many unneeded and unoccupied and dysfunctional local government buildings, and I could go on and count hundreds more just on Okinawa mainland itself). None of the infrastructures have led to increased employment of independent business minded young people and even the local hires are only "hakken or contract" employees there because their salaries are temporaryincluded in the budget.

No matter who much money is budgetted to Okinawa I personally can guarantee that Okinawa will continue to be the "begger" of Japan if Okinawa doesn't start searching their "own souls" and start clamoring for reforms from within. The solution for Okinawa is, do inner soul search and reforms and then build up and muster strength to negotiate or quarrel with Tokyo politicians in order to meet the goals of Okinawa. A long way to go unfortunately so for the moment the "brain drain" continues.

I wish foreign airlines would make Kansai their hub if the landing rights come down. Foe those of us who live outside Tokyo the connections can all be done via just one terminal. Anyone experienced the hassle of going from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 at Narita? The shuttle sucks and with the Olympics just around the corner I can imagine thousands of travellers waiting for the airport shuttle. But of course nothing will be done or can be done as Japanese authorities do not read English newspaper/media or take heed of the angry shivering commuters once they are outisde their terminal.

Posted in: Woman held for trying to strangle 6-month-old son to death See in context

I forsaw this type of mothers on the horizon starting 3 decades ago. I recall telling my wife how difficult it would become to find a suitable wife for our 2 boys when they grow up. Reason was the pampering the girls were receiving from their now 40-50ish parents who themselves had been pampered by their babyboomer parents now in their late 60's or early 70's.

I also very well recall telling my friends that there will be babies who will suffer greatly as these mothers become "tired" of their babies in the same way they become tired of the baby dolls.

I purposely focus on the girls and not the boys as I in my old fashion way believe that "motherly love" is what keeps the family intact and not the father, The father on the other hand has a different responsibility in offering security to the wife and the kids. No more or less responsible than the wife.

"It is interesting to see the increase in the number of flights to Naha from China, Taiwan, HongKong. I can see tourists (and accompanying high tech businesses) from outside Japan will provide the economic opportunities Tokyo fails to recognize in Okinawa."

Ohh you're so right, Doug. But think back, Satsuma invaded Okinawa in 1609 due to the richness we had accumulated by trading with the Southeast nations that in turn traded with Europe. Japan being the hermit kingdom just like North Korea today began to look with envy on Okinawa's richness and cultural advancement while they had to cope with the petty skirmishes within. Now Okinawa should understand that both can play this game. I would certainly like to see relations with other nations upgraded during this new Onaga administration. Why depend on handouts from Tokyo? In the long run Okinawa loses out so what's to lose?

Posted in: New Okinawan governor snubbed by Abe, Suga See in context

This childiish snubbing from Abe and his cronies remind me when the Ryukyu Islands run by by US generals in the 50's prior to reversion had the mayor of Naha City, Senega Kamijiro, behind bars for refusing to obey directives from the high commissioner, a US 3 star general. Cutting off electricity and water to Naha did the trick and the people kicked him out of the office.

This situation reminds me of that era. 65 years later Okinawa is still ruled by those they consider "outsiders". I predict that the same thing will happen to Onaga. He will cave in to Tokyo's demands and only then will they grant him audience. Onaga will cave in because Okinawans are in no situation to tighten their belts and fight. They have lived off of the ridiculous/incredible budgets fixed by Tokyo since 1972 (reversion day) to fatten them up and Okinawans are not going to sacrifice their good life and rebel.

In Henoko, the protestors there when compared with recent Hong Kong protestors there is an absolute contrast. In Hong Kong the young ones rebel. At Henoko, the protestors are old and feeble. There are no young and middle aged protestors.

History is in the making on Okinawa but unfortunately it's only a repeat.

There is no Mahatma Ghandi in the Okinawans, no more Senega Kamijiros. The tradition there is more Chinese and they call it "munchuu" and that means "all for our clan". The last time the Okinawans tried to repel the invaders was in 1609 when samurais from Satsuma invaded the island. The island fell in a matter of days as the king had taken away all weapons from all the clans to insure his continued reign.

Onaga will cave in and try to come up with an excuse for kowtowing to Tokyo. After all Onaga is a wolf dressed in sheep skin. He came up the ranks piggybacking on the LDP and up to a year ago he was a ranking LDP. He's no Senega Kamijiro.

With the USA as always gungho and gunhappy with weaker people and weaker nations I wonder how the Americans would react if the table was reversed and the assassination victim was Obama. Maybe with the help of American black basketball players the North Koreans can make something similar to tick off both Democrats and Republicans and the US police departments.
