Hope this guy wins but the vote is probably rigged. He might want to keep an AK at the ready and sleep with one eye open, too.

Exactly. Sooner, better than later, accept who you are and politely (?) tell detractors to take a hike. You'll feel better and realize those people aren't your friends and are not there to help you.

As some have said, there is no reason for a stranger to be touching anyone's child's body. His story would have to be extremely convincing and I still would probably not be convinced. This is child molestation, plain and simple.

One of the coolest spots in Japan. When I first went there in the early 2000s, it was not overrun with tourists and was not roped off. Japan wants tourism but overtourism is ruining the enjoyment of many nice places. Glad I hit them up years ago.

It's not there yet, however. Japan was ranked a lowly 32nd in the latest global classification of digital competitiveness by Swiss management school IMD.

> And only seven Japanese firms appear among more than 1,200 tech "unicorns" -- start-ups worth more than $1 billion -- listed by CB Insights.

Forget it. You can lead a horse to water..but Japan is slow to change and is poor at adapting to global trends.

Posted in: 3-year-old girl dies after being hit by car; driver arrested See in context

This sort of situation almost happened to me. A child of about age 4 came out of nowhere from a parking lot and pedaled his bicycle right into the street. I had a split second to respond and swerved, barely missing hitting him. Upon looking back from my rearview mirror, the child was still astride the bike, toward the middle of the road, crying but unhurt. I was rattled too. Maybe the situation became apparent to him so he cried. I was tempted to stop and say something but thought better of it. That happened over 25 years ago on a road with no sidewalk and a total width of about 4 meters where there are many hidden entrances and no mirrors in that spot. All these years later, I still live in that area and the only thing that has changed is that they've painted a pedestrian walkway on that side. No thought goes into making driving easier and safer by illuminating the road, putting mirrors near concealed entrances, etc. Every time I pass that spot I remember that incident and I feel for this driver, and, obviously for the poor child. One question: Where were her parents or guardians? This happened on a road and the article doesn't state anything the driver did that was wrong as far as driving is concerned. He seems to be a victim of circumstance, as Japanese law always blames the driver even when there seems to be no real fault, intent, impairment, inattention, etc. A 3-year-old child should not be playing anywhere near a road and should never be out unsupervised. RIP.

Start from the old days: Psycho is number one all-time. Not your typical plot twist nowadays but in 1960, you could not have guessed you'd see mom's skeleton in that chair or Norman wearing that wig and acting like mom. That was a heart stopper. The Wicker Man was a good 70s movie. Angel Heart was good in the 80s. Sixth Sense, The Usual Suspects and Se7en are good ones from the 90s. Nowadays, the plot only sickens, not thickens.

Plenty of guilty people have walked free. I can think of a a number of known klansmen who were murderers - the whole town knew it - but got off scot fee and many that didn't even go to trial. I love what America stands for, but we haven't always stood for it.

u_s__reamerToday 11:44 am JST

OJ will always be a textbook case of American injustice by jury.

Yeah, but many of the cases that should have come to trial never even came close to seeing the courtroom, and, if OJ had been on trial for killing two non-whites, it would have been barely covered in the press. Blacks and the natives had a first-hand view for centuries of "justice." Some people had protection from prosecution provided by their complexion so there was very little justice. Facts.

Posted in: OJ Simpson, football player and actor brought down by his murder trial, dies at 76 See in context

OJ is the poster child for the rage many white people felt was an injustice against persons of their color. I believe he did it, but the evidence didn't show it, so he got acquitted. Many black people felt that was a tiny bit of karma for all the hundreds of years and incalculable amount of times blacks never got the justice they deserved and that "...with liberty and justice for all." meant all white people. OJ's case got a lot more publicity than all of those cases of injustice COMBINED. You don't have to like what I've written but it is a reality.

Another time for me to blame the victim. Drunk and starting trouble? Then basically attacking the guy by trying to prevent him from leaving and thus avoiding the conflict altogether? Let the driver go; he did absolutely nothing wrong. On a side note, if I attacked just 10 percent of the people who stared at me each day, I'd get charged with assault at least 2000 times a year. Anger management and alcohol counseling should be mandated for the "victim."

Only sumo wrestler I ever met. RIP Akebono

Same here. I met him and his entourage in the bathroom of the New Sanno Hotel back in 1991. He was a pretty cool and laid-back guy from what I could tell. They even made fun of me for at first mistakenly thinking one of the guys in the entourage was him because they looked a lot alike. It was great seeing him and Musashimaru make yokozuna during the heydays of 1990s sumo with those battles between them and the Hanada brothers. RIP to one of the greats. We've lost a few these past 10 years.

America is not, nor has ever been, a meritocracy. Take a look at the States that are listed: Texas, Kentucky, Idaho, Florida and Alabama. Idaho is well known for having virulent white supremacists. The others are known for being Confederate states with historically deep seated ties to slavery and discrimination so I'm not surprised by this movement against diversity at all. They have always been racist places, but especially virulent towards black people. Nothing has really changed; they are just a bit better at hiding their racism through the laws they pass. Jim Crow was never defeated and is alive and well.

Not exactly true. US post war reconstruction was indeed significant. But modern Japanese history and development doesn't start in 1945, It starts in the late 1800s.

OK, and I do remember reading about certain ships from a certain country conducting gunboat diplomacy in the 1800s to open up the place.

Japan wouldn't be anywhere near it is now without the U.S. The reason for its success is directly tied to how they were rebuilt by America. Get it straight. One more thing, I've been to many so called Third World countries and have been treated much better than in Japan. Character and treatment of your fellow man is much more important than how clean a toilet looks.

Posted in: New York 'trash revolution' targets overflowing waste, and the rats feasting on it See in context

New York is one of the most densely occupied cities on the planet -- particularly Manhattan, whose 1.7 million inhabitants mostly live in high-rise buildings with no space in between.

Finding room for large containers that can accommodate the buying habits of a consumption-crazed society, accustomed to using and then quickly discarding what they buy, is a complex challenge.

It is a "big problem," said Steven Cohen, a professor of environmental and public affairs at Columbia University.

Practically, the only place containers can be placed is on sidewalks, intruding on the space used by pedestrians, or in streets, further complicating traffic.

It's all about money so the city would never do it but it should require all new high-rise buildings to have spaces on each floor or space at the bottom or underground dedicated to holding containers of trash until it can be picked up.
