I'm not sure what the reporter from Shukan Jutswa is smoking, but the claim that “Whenever American economic or financial interests head overseas, it is the CIA that draws the lines,” had me rolling on the floor laughing. I await the claim that the Yakuza are an important cultural asset that needs to be protected. I suggest that anyone interested in actually learning about the Yakuza reads Kaplan and Dubro's book on them. Scary stuff!

The current reliance on botox is scary. Just look at Nicole Kidman, supposedly a regular user, whose face no seems to be expressionless. I would also be worried in Japan as to how regulated the industry is ... if at all.

Two things bother me about the word. First, a lot of Japanese only apply it to 'Whites', using other terms to distinguish Africans, Asians and so on. Second, they use it when travelling outside of Japan to talk about the locals. The word's not racist, but the mindset of some Japanese is.

GrouchyGaijin, I have to agree with you. The continuing influence of the "Black Van Men" on Japanese politics harkens back to the bad old days pre-WWII and people like Toyama Mitsuru and Uchida Ryohei. Wakamiya's book looks like it is one that should be required reading, both within Japan and abroad.
