Look on the bright side my British friends. Our country (America) was ruled by conservatives for 8 years, and look how great we're doing now!

I've always found fascinating how americans venerate Star Trek for the "supposedly" anti-xenophobism of having a multi-ethnic crew, as opposed to the reality --that we see in this very forum-- of their reactions when encounter a truly different culture, like the japanese.

As we learned in the episode "Let This Be Your Last Battlefield", though we (Non Japanese)may be black on the left and white on the right, and they (the Japanese) maybe black on the right and white on the right, and may think that we are very different, we are ultimately the same, and should learn to get along before we destroy one another.

As an aside: Am I the only one who thought that the Vulcans were based on the Japanese?

Don't know know that bikes and electric cards are steps towards communism?! Only by staying fat/out of shape and polluting our environment can we preserve our freedom!

There are quite a few factual errors with this article. First, the m-flo song "Love Long and Prosper" was on the album COSMICOLOR. Second neither Deep Space Nine nor Voyager were cancelled--both series ended their runs, while the prequel series 'Enterprise' actually was canceled.

The law is explicit. While cops have to ask you your status, they must have a reason for doing so. In other words, they can't pull you over because your Mexican.

STEP 1 "There was a report of a robbery in this area, and you fit the description of the suspect.". BAM! 'probable cause'; if you honestly believe that there is a judge in America who will question such an action by a police officer in America, you are quite foolish I think.

STEP 2 "May I see proof that you are an American Citizen or legal resident?"

Wash, rinse, and repeat for however many brown people that officer runs into during that shift.

I've been stopped with this type "probable cause" in many an all-white neighborhood in the US.

In 2001, the younger Graham described Islam as evil. More recently, he has said he finds Islam offensive and wants Muslims to know that Jesus Christ died for their sins.

Funny that it's OK to meet with someone with this opinion, but if he were to come within 100 feet of a moderate Muslim, the right would be howling away.

Mt Rainier have been going for years! Who copied who?

Starbucks has been around for 40 years, so I'm pretty confident in saying that Mt. Rainier (Which is just a Morinaga brand) copied Starbucks. Even the name 'Mt. Rainier', which is a mountain in Washington, the state where Starbucks was founded, is a dead give-away.

The plastic cap on this product serves no practical purpose other than to make the package look similar to a Starbucks brand drink.

I thought that was the whole point. I still remember the "bootleg Starbucks" I saw at the convenience store the first time I came to Japan.

Posted in: Arizona governor signs immigration enforcement bill See in context

I disagree with this legislation on a personal level--I remember being stopped and questioned by the police in Japan while my white friends, Americans like myself, were greeted by the same police with a smile and a wave. This legislation sets a up a de facto system where anyone vaguely brown can be stopped and harassed by the police.

That said, had the federal government taken a firm stance on illegal immigration (other than firmly ignoring the issue) years ago, this legislation would have never reached the governor's desk.

If we'd had tighter regulation, the global financial crisis would have never happened in the first place.

new meme that Conservatives are all Homophobes

"new"? That's right, it's liberals who have been condemning homosexuals and comparing them to people who commit rape and bestiality all this time, right? Mike Huckabee is the first conservative to ever do this, right?

Posted in: Huckabee likens gay marriage to incest, polygamy See in context

What Huckabee is saying is that the relationship between a gay couple should not be defined as marriage. History and tradition both support this view.

Right. Marriage is more of a religious thing. That said, the U.S. government which is a secular entity, should not be endorsing religious unions. Everyone should be offered civil unions and if the religious folk want to get "married" afterward, then that's fine.

He does raise valid points in the comparison of "gay marriages" to incest and polygamy.

How so? Please cite logical and rational arguments. Nothing from the Bible, okay?

Obama wants to extend Bush’s tax cuts, except for individuals making more than $200,000 a year and couples making $250,000.

And this is why he meets so much Republican resistance--The $200,000+ plus crowd is the only group that the GOP cares about.

There were plans for one, done by the same studio that did the 3-D animated Astro Boy/Tetsuwan Atom, but last I heard, the studio has shut down and the project is in limbo.

iPad supports Java script IIRC. It's Flash that is not supported.

This is the first Apple product in a long time that I am not excited about. My iPhone does fine with casual web-browsing, and if I need more computing power outside, I take my notebook with me.

And yes, Japan is a bit behind on public access wi-fi. I expected as much in the provincial town that I lived in, but was shocked that it was so sparse in a tech capital like Tokyo. I'm sad to hear that it hasn't improved much since I left. Not even at Starbucks?

App. They can be updated, unlike travel books which require a new edition. They can tap into a phone's internet/GPS capabilities. Also, if you're looking at a phone, you look like a person looking at a phone. If you're looking at a guidebook, you look like a tourist, and in many country tourist=mark to be taken advantage of. Also if you're using an app, that's one less thing you have to carry with you everyday.

Moto, American military lose some benefits when they sign on. Some even lose their lives. When I was in, no one 'called out sick'. That BS is for civilians. If you want to enjoy American military healthcare, I urge you to sign up for the United States Marine Corps and start takin' advantage now.

Dude, I'd LOVE to. Three squares a day? Free housing? Pension? Semper Fi! Unfortunately, the USMC actively engages in age discrimination and won't let me in because I am "too old". Trust me, I have actually checked.

To answer your question, Japan is a socialist country. Nothing is free. If you want to pay taxes like the Japanese or most Eurobeans pay taxes you should tell your government.

As I said, I lived in Japan for many years, and I never once complained about the "evils" of paying taxes. As for telling my government, I do believe that I have by voting for progressive candidate who support universal health care and social programs.

I assume that you don't live in Japan then, because how could a someone who bleeds red, white and blue like yourself wake up in the morning knowing that you'll have to spend another day under a commie/socialist/Marxist system? If I were a bootstrapping Daniel Boone-like figure as most of the conservatives here act like they were, I'd have no choice but to commit seppuku rather than deal with red oppression!

What'cha got next?

Posted in: U.S. Congress clears historic health care bill See in context

Doesn't Japan have at least quasi-socialized health insurance? When I studied and worked there, I recall having to enroll in social insurance--I was not given an option. If this is the case, shouldn't every conservative, freedom-lover on JT who lives in Japan be buying tickets to some pioneer-spirit full utopia somewhere, where everyone stands on their own two feet straight out of the womb? If you're in Japan in the US military, isn't your health care paid for with taxpayer money? if so, shouldn't you be heading to your CO and demanding a discharge so that you are not a part of a commie-socialist scheme?
