Posted in: Japan looks to allow NHK to start simultaneous online streaming See in context

"We would like to meet public demand for watching (NHK) programs on their smartphones," said communications minister Masatoshi Ishida.

NHK should show us the verifiable numbers, legitimate research that led to this conclusion.

People installing a TV receiver capable of getting NHK programs are obliged to sign a subscription contract with the broadcaster under the law

Does this mean that if i have a TV from the US , that cannot tune in to the local frequency - then I can tell the NHK walkers to leave me alone?

Aw common, dont just down-vote a comment without providing verifiable counter-argument. There might be no verifiable proof that the release was paid off - BUT please show any proof that it was not.

With all the good news about the release of the captive journalist, it seems no one has mentioned how the release transpired. I am assuming the silence means that it was paid off?

I don't get what the fuss is about if the airlines (a private company)  offer to reduce the price they charge for people with mental disabilities. They are not charging abled-bodies more, they are voluntarily reducing their income to provide something good to persons with disabilities. Crab mentality?

The fact remains that his Russian colleague died "of natural means" immediately after his testimony, that even WADA admitted the vials were tampered. Its all in Netflix documentary : Icarus.

jcapanToday 08:13 am JST I'm sorry I don't see how this is racist, it's a cartoon.

Since JT commenters are probably 90% white guys, 1/2 of which consume NewsCorps' prolefeed, this is no surprise. Not saying you're one of them but when all the white blokes gather round the country club table, what ensues is rarely worth listening to

I'm not white but I also saw just a cartoon perfectly depicting what Serena was like during that game - A losing player on a meltdown trying to blame everything else except her poor performance. If you are going to nitpick on a cartoon for accuracy in color and form - then you are mistaking it for a picture.

Capital Punishment perspectives:

From a convicted innocent - it is an unfair system, from a perpetrator of a heinous crime - to live is preferable, for the victims of the crime it's Justice to appease their pain, for the State - it is a deterrent to heinous crimes. For Human Rights activists, for religion, for the Philosophy majors...

unfortunately, the State cannot satisfy everyone's interest.

Posted in: U.S. military to deploy 5 Ospreys at Yokota in October See in context

Yubaru - The "only" reason the area is crowded in the first place is because people made a conscious decision to build their homes and schools around the base.

By the way, as you evidently are unaware, the AF already "shares" Kadena with the AF. While combining all three air wings onto Kadena may be one solution, it would make things a hell of a lot worse for the surrounding communities for a host of reasons.

You also have no idea about the geography of Okinawa if you think Kadena is located "beach-side" as well.

Really annoying how folks who make posts like this, they THINK they know something thanks to Google Sensei, but the reality is far from it!

I am Okinawan by blood and by residence.  Let's just say my job allows me to be at ALL US Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force bases on the Island. I don't think I would need Google to verify my facts - I live in it.

Posted in: U.S. military to deploy 5 Ospreys at Yokota in October See in context

"A total of 24 MV-22s have been deployed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in a crowded residential area of Ginowan in Okinawa".

Yubaru:

Remember, they are only deployed in a crowded residential area because the Okinawan government and the national government took over 20 years to get anything done.

Dont blame the US military for upgrading it's equipment

The Ospreys are deployed in a crowded area as Futenma Air Station because it is the only AS the US Marines Corps have in Okinawa. There is the largest US installation in Asia-Pacific: Kadena Air Base and it is by the beach side - but that is an US US Air Force base - you see, they don't share resources. It seems  that the locals have the burden of protecting themselves from these "upgraded equipment" because the order of things within the US Military cannot be changed?

A generalized assumption; but i can just imagine that if this is happening in an institution of higher learning in Japan, and with the suspiciously fixed 30% population of female doctors across the country - then this form of discrimination must be happening elsewhere other than schools. Oh my.

Posted in: 2 teachers fired over sexual misconduct; one arrested for secretly filming female colleagues See in context

DisillusionedAug. 3 04:25 pm JSTIf you read all the Japanese news, this perverted teacher thing is nearly a weekly event. Only a few make it to JT. There was an elementary school teacher arrested a fortnight ago for putting his phone camera in the girls toilets. The toilets of children! There is a serious illness in many Japanese men who have an unhealthy sexual fascination with children.

Very true. Just take a peek at adult manga /comic books, sexual graphics with children is quite a norm, current anime series; most characters have become little girl heroines in skimpy clothes. I walked into an arcade shop to win a UFO catcher prize and all i see is anime characters of women/girls in seductive poses. And these are not x rated yet.  - not hard to find where the twisted fantasies come from.

Goodlucktoyou July 29 09:16 am JSTI love manhole covers, although I find the word “man” offensive. But walking on the street, I don’t wanna see what appears to be sexy young girls.

A Manhole does not have a gender reference, it does not mean a hole in a human, it means that it is a passage for humans to get into the sewer. Man- in this reference is a collective noun. Do you seriously see 'sexy young girls" in the images?

Posted in: Ride-hailing firm Grab hits back in Uber takeover row See in context

After the merger/acquisition of Grab-Uber in the Philippines, many commuters felt that it became harder to get a ride, drivers became less disciplined and the fare actually went up. Grab dictates the rate of fare based on traffic, available and demand - it was the same formula Uber uses but when both companies were operating, Uber had lower rates, not to mention more disciplined and educated drivers. The positive side is that unlike metered taxis, chances of getting ripped off or getting robbed is slim with these services because the final rate is set prior to the ride and drivers are registered in the system. The negative side is that on rush hour or times of high demand, the rates go up so high it becomes a service for the privileged few.

If you haven't read her book, it's unfair to call her a bluff. Her instructions are not just about organizing , but also the added benefit to one's mental state. My mother is a borderline hoarder and thus, the clutter in her home. Her mentality is: "these things can be gifted, will increase in value in the future or good to have when you need them, it's my recreation". We tried everything, from not giving her anything, moving her to a new apartment to these self-help books. I believe her hoarding has a lot of causes; from not having enough when growing up, trying to live the life (and things) from the past, to just feeling secure being surrounded with stuff. It is Psychological, and I would agree with the author that tidying up can be a life-changing magic.
