good article and I completely agree and those that cant understand he's using McDonalds etc as an EXAMPLE. McDonalds here I can get BBQ sauce for free if I request it. I would rather genuinely friendly staff and If I get bad service here I don't go back. Id rather the variation of service than soulless standardized service.

i have one and love it, find it much more useful than my laptop, however neither question in this survey is very useful. Its a great device but filling a void is a bit over the top and as others have pointed out pretty much all gadgets are not necessary.

crazygaijin i never said anything about that otherwise your arguing against the wrong person or creating an entirely new argument. Also please note that Tojo was prime minister only until July 1944. Cannot be the sole reason for Hirohitos actions for example his brother being in charge during the time of the Rape of Nanking...yeah I'm sure brothers never talk. You seriously gotta read a bit more dude.

In the "Sixty years after Hiroshima" issue of the Weekly Standard, American historian Richard B. Frank points out that there are a number of schools of thought with varying opinions of what caused the Japanese to surrender. He describes what he calls the "traditionalist" view, which asserts that the Japanese surrendered because the Americans dropped the atomic bombs. He goes on to summarise other points of view.[17] Tsuyoshi Hasegawa's research has led him to conclude that the atomic bombings were not the principal reason for Japan's capitulation. He argues it was the swift and devastating Soviet victories on the mainland in the week following Joseph Stalin's August 8 declaration of war that forced the Japanese message of surrender on August 15, 1945.[18] Others with similar views include The "Battlefield" series documentary,[2] Drea,[14] Hayashi,[15] and numerous others, though all, including Hasegawa, state that the surrender was not due to any single factor or single event.

from wikipedia anyway so not a single event but multiple and either the A bombs or Soviet invasion was the deciding factor.

As agreed at Yalta, the Soviet Union had intervened in the war with Japan within three months of the German surrender, and they were therefore entitled to the territories of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands and also to preeminent interests over Port Arthur and Dalian, with its strategic rail connections. The territories on the Asian mainland were subsequently transferred to the full control of the People's Republic of China in 1955; the other possessions are still administered by the Soviet Union's successor state, Russia.

tkoind I pretty much agree with what you say but I tend to put more emphasis on the Soviet Invasion. Anyway I recommend that author to you, Nationalists in Japan sent him death threats for his views.

Steve...whats your point?

crazygaijin read be informed

Although the commencement of the invasion fell between the atomic bombings of Hiroshima, on August 6, and Nagasaki, on August 9, the timing of the invasion had been planned well in advance and was determined by the timing of the agreements at Tehran and Yalta, the long term buildup of Soviet forces in the Far East since Tehran, and the date of the German surrender; on August 3, Marshal Vasilevsky reported to Stalin that, if necessary, he could attack on the morning of August 5.

one i'm hardly a japanese apologist i'm sure ossan and nige would be happy to state that. secondly to say it was all because of the US is extremely naive and uninformed.

As I stated and i'm sure any descent historian would recognise that the USSR invasion of Japan was not Just a land grab but a decision brought about by a allied request to stalin for him to attack Japan.

Tkoind2

Read Books by Saburo Ienaga Japanese historian very good he argues that the soviet invasion played a major contribution in japans decision to surrender. Though the a bombs were destructive the fire bombings of individual cities tokyo Nagoya etc were more destructive than the a bombs and japan showed little interest apart from weak peace feelers through the Russians.

Please note people that russias invasion was because of an agreement to do so with Churchill and Trumen not just a land grab. Russia did not gain much land Manchuria was handed back to china.

IMO the Russians put the fear of god into the Japanese they knew the US wer not the devils they portrayed them as but the Russians were and they had a much bigger grudge against Japan than the US

Agree with sourpuss, this is nothing new many books cover this already. As to what percentage the A bombs and the soviet invasion had in Japans surrender, we will never know and can only speculate. Maybe it was just Hirohito trying to save his own ass, knowing the Soviets would execute him while the Americans might save his ass.

But the Soviet invasion was a brilliant not traitorous at all considering Japans use of sneak attacks without declarations of war. 1905, 1937, 1939, 1941

I would like a book on the Japanese communist party and its early leadership about their popularity and their attempts to transform Japanese society after WWII. Had it not been for the CIA Japan could be a very different country

IMO though the A bombs ere terrible, dropping them is something the US does not have to atone for or apologise for. The IJA under the Emperor had to be stopped they were one of the largest killing machines in Human History. 150,000 Japanese civilians pales in comparison to the amount of bloodshed Japanese committed throughout Asia

i spoke japanese and went into a real estate agent who were very helpful and they phoned up several places and the minute it was mentioned I was a foreigner they said no. Luckily I got a great place lived there for 2 years and I got on well with neighbors and the landlord who was more than happy to rent out to foreigners after me.

Regards to the article, I have to agree with tkoind, trying to make poor excuses for Japans racism and the reasons given are really lame trying to bring it back to WWII etc. Call a spade a spade or racism, racism. Stop being apologists.

What is done taiji is not humane at all. Rather than looking at this as to eat whale or dolphin look at it as an animal rights issue.

while I see no problem with eating whale or dolphins in a sustainable way, killing them should still be done with the minimum of distress to the dolphins and what happens in Taiji is barbaric. The rest of the world has generally accepted that killing animals for food should be done in a humane way. Why doesn't the Japanese government simply create a law that killing dolphins must be done in a humane way? Again the Japanese government are the ones that allow this "BS" to continue.

ive had countless arguments with Japanese that deny any dolphins are killed in Japan, despite the photographic evidence of dolphin meat for sale in supermarkets.

They would ask a fellow japanese who would say no, me being a foreigner could not possibly know so I was wrong.

Dont know if this deserved the oscar, the article doesnt even say what other films were in the category. Sloppy journalism

IMO there is something in the Japanese mentality that makes this common. There is a social pressure for women to have children in Japan and get married, however many of these couples especially women are not prepared emotionally and mentally for the relationship yet alone children, combine that with lack of family and government support. These women are children mentally themselves.

As a side note I think abortion is frowned upon in Japan however killing the child once born seems to be more acceptable...I know thats not the right word but dont know how else to describe it.

it was a way to cater to the unions and perhaps stray people away from buying Toyota and buying US cars.

Really? The fact that people died and were severly injured due to faults in Toyotas vehicles is just a trick to cater to unions. Some people on this forum are sick.

The fatal crash involved Saylor (45); his wife, Cleofe (45); Mahala, their 13-year-old daughter; and Chris Lastrella (38), their brother-in-law; all four perished, said Detroit News previously. Details of the chilling accident that prompted the NHTSA to investigate the crash include the 2009 Lexus plummeting over an embankment and bursting into flames. The family was able to contact a 911 operator, saying they were unable to stop the ES 350; Lastrella advised the operator that the Lexus had no brakes. Most poignantly, the 911 tape, recently made public, included the family asking one another to pray at the recording’s end, just before their deaths, said Detroit News.

Federal highway safety inspectors recently released details of that deadly crash including a finding that, reports the LATimes, involves a gas pedal design in the Lexus ES 350 sedan that actually increases the likelihood of the pedal being “obstructed” by a car’s floor mat. Including the California fatalities, the NHTSA received 100 complaints involving 17 crashes and five deaths, said Detroit News previously. One-third involved the Lexus ES 350, the Free Press said earlier.

i listened to a podcast from NPR foreign dispatch and it followed a company of US troops in afghanistan. They called in air support from Harrier Jets for a single Taliban guy with an RPG, which seems a massive disproportionate reaction. Reminds of the scene in Jarhead, surely a single sniper would be better and limit civilian casualties.
