Posted in: The crash that claimed the life of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili prior to the opening of the Vancouver Winter Olympics was aired on national TV. Do you think it should have been? See in context

I haven't seen it but the description was enough for me. So I believe it shouldn't have been shown. A graphic like the one they used to illustrate the girl who fell from the platform would have been better if they wanted to show it.

Nice to see a story of heroism. Great job!

Posted in: Angel and demons See in context

I could not get it why the article is titled Angels and Demons

Maybe it's a reference to the manga? Haven't read it so I can only guess.

Posted in: Stuffed teenage girls arrested for trying to eat and run at restaurant See in context

Riding a bicycle without shoes? That would have hurt a lot if the pedals weren't the plastic type - not that the plastic type won't hurt. Maybe they were caught because of having a passenger (2 girls on one bike, one with shoes was driving) but confessed to not paying.

Posted in: 3 Malaysian churches firebombed in 'Allah' dispute See in context

From Wikipedia, "Allah" is the Arabic word for "God" used by Arab-speaking and most Arabic-descended members of the Abrahamic faiths - including Christianity and Judaism. From my point of view, they shouldn't be angry as it refers to the same deity - the one worshipped by Abraham.

What a mess. Maybe the Christians should just use another word.

Posted in: Younger twin stabs older sister after argument See in context

I wonder if they are identical twins... Maybe the "younger" twin was suicidal...

I hope they get proper counselling though. But based from the things I read during the past year or so, that's highly unlikely...

Posted in: Windows 7 strong, but don't pay to upgrade See in context

As I said in a different comment, if the number of users were the other way around, Macs would be hounded by viruses too.

And I agree. By my experience Windows 2000 is the best OS I ever worked with. Too bad they discontinued support without a worthy replacement. But I'm giving Windows 7 a chance.

Posted in: Microsoft patches 34 security holes, many critical See in context

If the number of users were the other way around, Macs would be the target of viruses too.

I ran Microsoft Update just now, and the updates available doesn't even reach half of the number stated. I guess security flaws ≠ updates.

The title got me thinking of showdowns at sundown.

I believe the court is right to overturn the verdict. Will you sue Microsoft if someone plagiarized someone else's work using MS Word?

This is sad and disturbing. What kind of people will those kids grow up to be? What kind of parents do they have to be able to think of things like that?

Posted in: Jackman stops Broadway show over ringing cell phone See in context

What's strange about things like this happening is that the owner fails to realize that it's their phone or it takes them forever to dig their phone out of wherever it was being kept at the time.

Posted in: Kobayashi reclaims world hamburger-eating title See in context

Nice biceps for a speed eating champ. I remember a similar show I happened to see over the weekend (with an Angela Aki look-alike competing). They're all slim for speed eaters. Makes you think if they eat at all outside the competition...

Posted in: Student arrested for using counterfeit money at flea market See in context

Should have gone to a place where money exchanges hands a lot faster, like a fish market, or a standing bar at peak hour. Would have made it a lot easier to shift the notes.

But it wouldn't be as cheap.

Maybe the woman suspected that the bill was fake, that's why she looked for the watermark or other signs. If someone handles money a lot, a simple touch will give you an idea if it's fake or not.

Posted in: Michibata sisters to spice up Bistro SMAP See in context

They look good in that little picture. But I have to agree somewhat with other posters that skinny isn't attractive. In my opinion its all about proportion. Huge bust and "long back" doesn't work, neither is a big bun and flat chest. Exceptionally long legs look weird too.

Back on topic, what time is this? I don't watch TV except for weather news and when the ground shakes.

An avoidable accident, unless of course the ball flew off-course. But based on the article it's a lack of common sense.

Posted in: 18-year-old Japanese woman loses Y8 mil antique violin on Austrian subway See in context

Good luck to her finding it. Austria isn't Japan in a sense that no one cares about anything left behind that you will probably find it the same place you left it even after several hours, if not at a lost and found.

Posted in: Sex education becoming mandatory in England See in context

I somewhat agree with skipthesong. If the "morals" of the media didn't degrade, there wouldn't be such a rise in teen pregnancies. Now it may be necessary to teach sex ed at a younger age, but 5 is a little too young. No earlier than 7 may be better.

Up to 5 years in prison and a fine for "illegally accessing someone's account" just to delete their character? That's a bit over the top isn't it?

Posted in: Policeman run over, robbed while on blind date in Fukuoka See in context

What a poor place to pick for a blind date. I've gone on some "blind dates" before (a.k.a. eyeballs) and we always do it on a public place with lots of people. Meeting up in a fringe area like in a parking lot is asking for trouble.

Posted in: Homeless man See in context

When you've come accross beggars asking for money to "buy food" and giving them real food (a pack of crackers for instance) makes them frown, you'll think twice giving them spare change. Some homeless/beggars are like that because they're just outright lazy. Sad thing is you really can't tell the difference.

Posted in: Japanese girls go sexier in their fashion styles See in context

Just had a thought...

Does this include women who are underdressed and yet makes a fuss about covering their behinds when climbing stairs? If they're so conscious about someone seeing the inside of their skirt, they should wear longer skirts instead.

If you wear revealing clothes, don't complain if they work.

Forgive my ignorance, but is it always the driver's fault if he hit a pedestrian even if, for instance, the pedestrian crossed a street without using pedestrian lanes?

Posted in: Japanese girls go sexier in their fashion styles See in context

"Fashionable" is such a subjective term...

I agree with some of the above posters that the amount of skin shown is not proportional to beauty. I actually find ladies in dresses/skirts more pleasing to look at. "Popular fashion" is an eyecatcher for sure, whether they have the body for it or not. But the impression it leaves is not necessarily the best one.

And reading this article reminded me of a girl I saw sitting infront of the church I attend. She couldn't be more than 15 years old, but her shorts were so short and loose that you can see up to there. If I had a daughter she wouldn't be seen wearing such clothing - especially not infront of a church.

Posted in: How difficult or easy is Japanese to learn, compared to other languages? See in context

I'm Filipino, and English is my second language. It's easier to learn basic Japanese grammar if you put it side by side with Tagalog because the patterns are similar. Word-for-word substitution is possible in most cases. Word equivalents in the vocabulary also exists, unlike in English. But as the other posters stated, the writing system is another story.

Don't they have security?

And is it so easy to do that? They found it at 4:30, trains are left at the depot at around 2?
