If you must go, do what we did to minimize stress. Use trains for shorter trips and buy 1st class seats as often 2nd class unreserved seats were full. Fly with only hand luggage unless you enjoy lost bags. Pay a bit more to get front row seats with reserved, priority boarding.

Remember that many places (hotels, Air bnb, stores) there lack air conditioning despite the now hot summers (34 degrees in Switzerland yesterday!)

Those other cities were great but Tokyo offers shopping, museums, transportation (domestic and international) and food far, far beyond the others. It’s not a city you want to be poor in but try being poor in London, Paris or NYC. Tokyo is terrific!

This article seems to suggest that since most pensioners get by on 1.7million, workers should all be fine with 3mill. No way! As a retired pensioner, I am more than happy to have had a far higher salary when I worked, and now am receiving far more income those figures without work. Money has given us options - to retire early, to donate to charity, to travel extensively. Those options disappear without better incomes.

The secret is securing multiple income sources post-retirement by long term saving, investing wisely and being lucky. And having two very good incomes.
