This is the reason there are many schools that ban javelin, pole vault, and other sports that can have accidents causing serious injury.

Hope this girl recovers 100%!

Posted in: Reported domestic violence cases up by 46.3% so far this year See in context

I am sure there are several factors that have to do with the increase, such as ease of reporting. Yet, I think the economic hardships that Japan is going through also increases household stress levels, which lead to domestic violence.

Either way, sad that so many are suffering.

Even the Supreme Court of Japan strives to keep the truth from being told. Makes sense ... if all the secrets of Japanese corporations were brought to light many of the corporations would have to scramble. This would help the stock market and economy speed up its course toward collapse.

If they are standing still, so what.

I can not stand those who are walking / bicycling / driving and texting / reading / playing a game.

Pay attention to the world or it is going to run into you!!!

I think it will take some independent studies to confirm what Mr. Yamaguchi is saying. The J-gov now has a record of liking to hide or not disclose relevant information.

Posted in: What do you think of aquafarming as an alternative to depleting fish stocks through overfishing? See in context

Shrimp, oysters and seaweed are already huge aquafarming products. Salmon, as VicM says, is dyed to give the meat a pink color.

Problems with this include both environmental and health issues. Some animal rights people might even bring up conditions in which they are kept. Environmentally, there is animal waste and depletion of some foods in nature so that the fish stocks can be feed. Often drugs, such as antibiotics, and chemicals are introduced to increase yield and decrease disease.

Posted in: Do you support the decision by donor nations to give $16 billion to Afghanistan to prevent the country from sliding back into turmoil when foreign combat troops depart? See in context

We have seen in the past that giving a country money has only a slight trickle down in to helping the people. Money will only entrench the government and supply them with weapons in which to "control" its people.

Give them the money, but on a performance or goal basis. Until they meet them, the next chunk of funds is not released.

During questioning by the captures, the squirrels freely admitted that they were indeed escapees from the zoo. Thus, even if proven that they are not, their admission still holds higher than proof and will be kept confined.

Posted in: 5-year-old girl run over, killed by mother See in context

This has always been one of my fears, that I will accidentally run over my kid, or another when backing up. So, I err to the side of caution and check for kids around the car and in the parking lot before getting in. I make my children stand beside or in front of the car. I keep count and track of those I cannot control. Then I SLOWLY back out.

Interestingly, sometimes there are parents are around and could care less that their child is playing in a parking lot with a moving vehicle...
