Sony would have been better served by shooting Sakura footage from around Japan

Ah, you mean just like all the other commercials playing on Japanese TV at this time...nice.

@ Goodwill_Hunting I have all the same problems you do. Are you using a wireless connection. I thought that maybe my problem with the streaming errors. Not sure.

I've had a Hulu Japan subscription for over a year now, and it isn't very good in my opinion. It maybe ok for native Japanese speakers, but for someone who wants to watch in English, too much 'English' content has had the English removed and replaced with Japanese voice over. Especially the documentaries. It's a whole category that is just unwatchable for me.

I'm been meaning to cancel my subscription.

These cosmetic companies are mostly run by women and are quite different from male dominated corporations. I find it hard to put into words, but their corporate culture is extremely hierarchical and drive by fear of being ostracised, far more so than companies run by men...makes me shiver just thinking about it. (let the flaming begin)

Actually I think the question about the car is a good one. The car being analogous for a company, where all parts need to work in harmony. If you think you are the engine, then you want to be the driving force behind the company. If you think you are the steering wheel, then you are a tool that the is used by the management to steer the company is a direction...etc. Simple question really.

Posted in: Life after death? Yes, says one doctor See in context

CGB Spender Skeptics need to ask themselves the ultimate question "Why?"! They are so overly convinced about knowing everything and have a scientific, physical explanation for everything but they fail to understand that this is nothing compared to the things they don't know, never will understand and never will know.

I believe your argument is flawed. I think you'll find that the act of wanting to know everything and having a scientific answer for things is the same as asking 'why?'. I also wonder if people "never will understand and never will know", as you state, then what is the point in asking "Why?" in the first place? Your comment moves in circles.

Posted in: How to stop kids from walking into door handles See in context

We’d like you to think about how many times as a child were you walking perfectly parallel to and so close to a wall that you, in a brief moment of distraction, rammed your forehead into the handle of a closed door? If your answer is greater than or equal to “one,” you should be ashamed of yourself.

This comment is both condescending and shows a complete lack of insight. It's not when the door is closed, it's when the door is open. Lets take the example of the door in my apartment that leads from the living room into the hallway. This door stays open mostly to get air circulating through the rooms. It swings inwards into the hallway, so the sheer act of walking through the open doorway brings you in close proximity to the door handle. Now imagine an individual, or even a group of kids doing what kids do. Running, chasing each other, out of control, pushing and shoving, and generally enjoying themselves around the apartment. It doesn't take much to imagine a worst case scenario. And for me, worst case is a 7 inch long tapered door handle inserted into an eye socket.

Posted in: How to stop kids from walking into door handles See in context

I'm sure most of the comments here come from people who don't have young kids running around their japanese apartments. As a parent of a 3.5 year old boy, I really worry about the door handles in our apartment, and at one time I had even wrapped some bubble wrap one handle that seemed particularly dangerous. I'm not so worried about him bashing his head on one, as that would be a good lesson learnt, but I am worried about it traumatically inserting itself into his eye socket. I for one think these things from Tokyu hands are a great idea, although 500% overpriced.

Posted in: In Japan, the customer is not king See in context

One hot summers day a few years ago I went into a local fast food restaurant (or was it a coffee shop, I forget) in Meguro and ordered a large orange juice only to be told they do not serve large size orange juice, even though sitting on the counter in front of me was both large and small size disposable cups. I then said I will pay double for a large one...of course the answer was no. After a few snide comments from me, and out of frustration I ordered two small cups of orange juice. When they arrived I grabbed one of the large empty cups, and stood at the counter glaring at the shop assistant as I poured both small cups into the large cup....needless to say I was fuming. I hate how inflexible things can be here.

I often find it strange to meet people only 5 years younger than I who never got to experience the heady days when the first home computers started to hit the market in about 1977.

No mention of where we can get these yellow cards. It would be great if they were available and could be printed from a web page somewhere.

I can't see anything in my post that says that I believe this cold snap had anything to do with climate change with respect to human related activities. All I was stating was that we started spewing stuff into our atmosphere in great quantities starting in the 18th century, so give or take 50 years probably doesn't make a massive difference either way. So, in fact, I'm in agreement in that this cold spell is probably not so unusual considering the long term cyclic patterns of extreme weather.

Yeah, she was bleeding from the face quit a lot. I read in one report that the attacker had been dumped by a guy, and wanted some kind of random revenge. When I saw her she was actually quite sad looking, held up against the garage door looking quite ferlorn. I was quite surprised when I realized that she was the attacker.

Posted in: Woman stabbed at random in Tokyo park See in context

After hearing screaming and racing outside, my wife and I were the 3rd people on the scene. The knife lay on the ground, another woman was helping the victim (who was screaming a lot), and our next door neighbor had the attacker (a small woman) cornered by his garage. The victim was actually an old friend of my wife's that lived 4 houses down the street. She was bleeding quite a lot from her face, and leaving red puddles in the rain. The police arrived about 4 mins later.
