France has already suffered several of these attacks, both large and small, and with the Olympics coming up it sounds reasonable to be prepared.

Well, whatever they decide it will be a balancing act between so many opposing factors. Getting the IAEA involved was a good idea, though.

Amazing story. We must always remember that certain basic humanitarian rules apply, even during war.

Hmmm... not sure if Alonso 'caused' the crash, but his unorthodox efforts to shake off the chasing Russell must have been a contributing factor.

Brilliant that the Ferrari team came through, though. The old enemy awakes! It'll be interesting to see what happens over the next few races. MacLaren in orange are looking strong, and green Aston Martin too, quite apart from the four Red Bulls.

Charles will have fond memories of his trip(s) to Japan too, I should think, and meeting the environmentalist CW Nicol.

Hoping they can all be relaxed together, not too much Japanese formality!

The short section with one guy's finger pointing upwards, shouting Allahu Akbar into the camera, and the guy shooting around him at close range could not have been taken by anyone except one of the attackers.

Also I heard that they were spotted shortly before a turnoff where they could have chosen to go either to Ukraine or Belarus. As the crow flies, though, Teploe is almost equidistant from Ukraine and Belarus.

The article does not give her exact age, but ays she is a teenager, and a minor. So how old does that make her, max?

What's a 'pouch' in this case, anyway?

Without looking inside, the woman would not have known it contained money. If truly honest, she should have handed it in as is, and only checked the contents together with the store manager.

And there is the weakness. You are not projecting strength, Mike, but at least it does sound good though. Enjoy your vacation.

Posted in: Russian border region reels from sustained Ukrainian artillery and drone strikes See in context

I feel so sorry for ordinary Ukrainians, and for ordinary Russians in turn who will be paying the price of revenge as karma bites more and more deeply.

Putin can still say, "That's it. They've learned their lesson. Now they know that we keep our word. Let's go home."

If Ukraine gives up, they will then be fed into his mincing machine, just like what is happening in the stolen border areas.

This is the structure that he has built so lovingly.

Only he can stop this endless violence.

Posted in: The spring equinox is here: What does that mean? See in context

My Japanese house is designed so that the 'noki' overhanging eave shuts out the higher sun of summer.

During winter though it comes in diagonally; beside the large window is where I have placed my bed in order for the bedding to get warmed and dried every sunny day.

This week I have noticed that the morning sun now only reaches about halfway across the bed, so I have been pushing the bedding against the window!

They sound like very slow missiles, from this article.

I guess they must have gone a short way upwards in between, like a few thousand kilometers perhaps?

Posted in: Russia will be asked for ceasefire during Olympics, Macron tells Ukraine interviewer See in context

Russia needs a ceasefire to regroup. This could be a golden chance, but they would probably be afraid of losing face, so might not take it. Likely they'll just take the easy option of saying they don't recognize France, the West, the Olympic committee, etc.

Posted in: Nagoya elementary school students caught defrauding classmate for nearly ¥1 million See in context

So the kid had saved up everything he'd received, just as parents usually advise, to 'Put it in the bank!'

Ten years old, at ¥100,000+ yen a year, but he must have lived frugally and appeared poor to his classmates. Too good. No fun even. But then he told them of his savings. Fatal.

Kids can be mean, and on the receiving end it can seem like there is no escape from them.

Hoping the remaining family can find it in their hearts to reimburse him, or if not in their hearts, in their sense of fairness. Hope they do not think he ratted on their kid.

Posted in: Nagoya elementary school students caught defrauding classmate for nearly ¥1 million See in context

Ojf, maybe you should not be advertising on Japan Today how much savings you have! It sounds as though you have turned out just fine though, and the money did not spoil you. It's easy to spend money, but 100x harder to earn it.

PS I have this rare gold coin that you can have cheap!

When I was teaching at a high school, I saw kids controlling others. One asked to go to the WC during class, but when he came back he was carrying milk and a bun. Another kid walked over to his desk and took them. I realized after some time that the first had actually been sent out to get the stuff, at his own expense. He was being bullied, and the bully was bullying him, but also testing the teacher in front of the class, in order to show how much he disliked 'English' and anything to do with it.

Posted in: Nowadays, for fear of child predators, it is no longer considered safe in many countries to let young children go by themselves to and from school, to a friend's house, play in parks or at the beach, go to shops and so on. What was it like when you were growing up? See in context

Like Harry Potter going to Hogwarts for me, off to boarding school from Paddington by steam train, from the age of seven onwards. I sometimes used to call my father 'Sir' by mistake.

Before that we lived in the States and caught a yellow school bus to and from school. We were free to go and play anywhere all day otherwise.

I do remember my aunt once telling me when visiting London that I should never get into a car driven by a stranger.
