Someone else had to alert the police. My tentative guess is that the real victim probably wouldn't speak out for herself for fear of being called a 'honey trap' and 'asking for it.' I hate the gropers and I hate the honey trappers. Just leave the decent people alone and go live out in the woods!

Actually, if you start looking at the trial and the evidence, as opposed to 'OMG RACISM' you'll see that the jury made a pretty sensible decision.

Everyone, can you please stop taking sides? It's clear they BOTH have problems. The wife, who couldn't accept her husband's hobby and destroyed something he cared about, and the husband who was irresponsible with money and didn't consider the problems it was causing in their relationship. Both of them were wrong and both of them were stupid. I really just hope they can either work past this or find someone better for them.

You know, I think it's pretty admirable that she turned herself in. Yes, it was a horrible, awful thing to do, but the fact that she turned herself in means she's not a total monster. It takes a hell of a lot of inner strength to face justice. That doesn't make her a good person, but it does make her several steps up from the people who don't care about what they've done and just want to get away with it.

“The imperial family are not supposed to seek change themselves,” he said. “They adjust to the state of the country and reflect the values of Japanese people of their time,” he said.

I think this is a very interesting point, and seems to be what Japanese culture expects of leaders, both royal and otherwise.

Posted in: Chinese ask: Why doesn’t Japan hate America for dropping the A-bombs? See in context

Really, the average Japanese person's view of America is far more likely to be influenced by Hollywood than American politics. I think it comes down less to calculated statistics about culture and politics and economy and more the type of 'feeling' America and China give to the Japanese. Americans are 'hollywood stars' and Chinese are 'those annoying foreigners.' The stereotyping people do without realizing it is often a very powerful motivator in public perception, both good and bad. That's not to say there isn't history behind this conflict, but people tend to simplify larger conflicts into 'feelings' rather than 'well thought out conclusions.'

Instead of assuming the girl 'got what she deserved' why not consider that maybe she was there for a perfectly legit reason? I used to go into neighbor's houses all the time when I was a kid. Helping someone out, bringing in groceries, delivering messages, or just plain saying hello. You can't blame her for not being psychotically paranoid about someone it's very likely she knew pretty well.

Posted in: Woman, 'unaware' she was pregnant, delivers baby into cesspool See in context

While rare, instances of not being aware of pregnancy are more common than you think and is not the result of stupidity. Not only did my friend barely get a bump, she had no nausea or other unusual symptoms and even had regular periods.

If anything, I feel immense pity for these women. It's enough of a shock to figure out you're pregnant, it's quite another thing to figure out you're in labor. The strain is incredible and adding on the social pressure of being told you're a moron for not realizing you're pregnant, these types of births are very hard emotionally for the mother and father.

Imagine if tomorrow, out of the blue, you find out you now have a baby girl despite having no time to prepare emotionally or monetarily. If you seriously take a moment to consider it, that is an incredibly traumatic thing.

For those of you unfamiliar with how the body works: The body heats itself. It doesn't have to be extremely hot to get a heatstroke. There's more factors than just outside temp. It's what you're doing and how you're taking care of your body.

Posted in: Woman stabbed by stalker despite asking police for help See in context

They walked her home, they made sure she was inside, and did everything they should have. I think this article title is misleading. The police probably saved this woman's life by walking her home. Lots of commenters here are acting like they just sat there and watched her get stabbed. They had already left the house when the attack happened. The fact that they were close enough to hear her and call for medical help probably saved her life. Furthermore, there was no reason for them to search her house before leaving, as that is a completely bizarre action for a case of stalking and would probably be seen by the woman as an invasion of privacy. The victim's parents were there, so I think anyone would feel safe in that kind of situation.

This is a basic case of common sense police work. I would like to know what the critics would have done any differently than these officers without psychic knowledge of what was about to happen.

Posted in: Guilty and never proven innocent – every male train rider's nightmare in Japan See in context

Instead of making sweeping generalizations about both genders, let's call this what it is: A small percentage of both sexes making problems for everyone: The men who grope in the first place and the women who take advantage of this and falsely accuse. This is not an issue of women becoming too 'empowered', because let's face it, of all 1st world nations, Japanese women are some of the LEAST empowered. These women who falsely accuse are not high on feminism, because they are working against feminist. Every time a woman falsely accuses, it makes it more and more likely that the women who were really groped will be seen by society as liars if they press charges. It's difficult for a woman to choose between making a scene and possibly being grouped with scam artists, or just being silent and taking it. Whether it's putting innocent men in jail or making real victims afraid to speak up, these women who falsely accuse are in it for no one but themselves. I think the heart of this argument is not men vs. women, it's how to fix a broken justice system.

Posted in: Japanese Lolitas plan world domination See in context

I think many of the people on here don't understand the difference between lolita as a fashion and lolita as 'pedophilia.' The word Lolita in fashion is NOT used in the same way Lolita is in the book "Lolita." It's the difference between 'there's a bear at the zoo' and 'please bear in mind'. I know people here get excited about fruedian subtext, but just because Japan has a weird fetishization of youth does not mean that the fashion type is geared specifically towards that. It's like saying that wearing a pleated skirt means you're trying to be a schoolgirl or wearing boho clothing means you're a hippie. Not everything is purely sexual or even intended to be sexual at all.

The idea of Lolita is LACK of sexuality. There are no low necklines, no mini-skirts, and the majority of lolitas keep skirts below the knees. It's fine if you want to discuss sexuality in Japanese culture, but don't apply a blanket statement of sexuality to an entire fashion. This is not a black and white issue.

While I don't think this kind of style will ever really take off as everyday wear, I think Japanese lolita outfits are kinda cute. I reminds me of dressing up as a kid combined with runway fashion. I mean, tea parties? I may be getting older, but my inner child totally wants me to. After all, it's pretty fun.

Posted in: 83-year-old man arrested for beating his wife to death See in context

I find the lack of emotion coming from the comments here disturbing. This woman was most likely abused for a long time before this and making jokes about 'nagging' and feeling sorry for the man who will die alone because he murdered his own wife are completely heartless. And murder is not 'nonsense' either. I worry about some of the people here's basic lack of compassion.
