Posted in: Father dies sheltering 9-year-old daughter from blizzard See in context
While debating what was good what was bad, and while all agreeing that the father is a hero, please remember, at that instant, at that point, the father did not have another option. And as is known, the storm suddenly turned worse. And its just a kilometer from where the truck stopped. At that point, when the father did not have an option, and thought its safe to walk, obviously experienced in this type of storms before, he took a call and started walking in the snow.
Who told him it might get better? Where are the options that rescue is guaranteed? Cars sink in snow all the time, what to do then? The storm can get worse, he might get forever lost. The car would not move, so what does one do? Wait for death? In a trauma situation, people always think of the best possible option thinking worse might be just around the corner.
So he took a call and did what he thought is best. And he did save his daughter did he not?
Of course we learn lessons from each tragedy, but please note all tragedies are different and you have to take a decision. The storm passed and he was found, but there was no guarantee of that.
He is a hero, by every count in my book.

smithinjapan, I agree to the J-society thingy. People are too scared most of the times.
Its "His" apartment, not her, as per the news post.

Police said they believe that Yuuda stabbed the woman outside the apartment at first, possibly in a car, because they found bloodstains leading to the apartment.
dolphingirl, this probably means that he stabbed her in the car and brought her upstairs. But if that is the case, she must have screamed or raised hell on the way. Unless she was unconscious, that is. If she was unconscious, it was a difficult task to bring a young lady all the way to the 9th floor, even using the elevator.
Maybe he stabbed her in the car and pleaded his apologies and asked her to come to his room so he can give her first aid and call an ambulance.... maybe when she was in his room, she threatened that she will report to the police and will break up anyway, maybe at that moment he stabbed her again.
My imagination is running wild but there is more to this than meets the eye.

Posted in: More Tokyo train stations start using lights to stem suicides See in context
I have another suggestion.
Maybe they can put up movable bars, like they do in front of car parks, which go up and down at the press of a button, about a meter before the boarding gate of the trains? It would be closed before the train completely stops.
It would be an expensive option, but if people can be stopped to go near the rails before the train stops, you will not have people jumping in front of the train anymore. This can be manned by the same pushers and shovers who are employed to assist boarding. Though some will dodge and jump, I think you will solve the majority of the problem.
Of course better education and counseling can solve the problem at the root, but before that, this has to do.

Hey! Where does it say that she dressed like that in the train? Its just her photo from her band, it doesn't mention in the report that this was the dress that she was wearing. I don't think you can wear this and not ask for trouble. BUT IT DOESN'T MENTION SHE WAS WEARING THIS DRESS ON THE TRAIN... or the attacker recognized her from the band, for that matter. Its just another girl in the train who got victimized. This time, she also happens to be famous, that's all.

How can you run a story about a new type of fryer and include a picture >of the product's developer instead of the product you're talking about? >If someone is interested enough to read the story, do you think they'd >be more interested in seeing the company's president, or what the >product looks like?

"world's oldest". Incorrect.
In Northern Iraq(Kurdistan) there is a woman that is 132 years old and still alive. In Northern Iraq there are more people above 120 years old so i don't understand why they say "world's oldest" when he was only 113.
So unfair.

No matter what they do to their physical appearance, can south east asians ever look like the sexy brazilian ladies or the smart french ladies or the blonde scndinavians?
I am sure I am not alone in this feeling, but I think Japanese women are some of the most exotic, sexy and beautiful women in the world. I bet they can outshine all those ladies you mentioned, womanfor(brazilian, french, blonde scandinavian)women.. Now, this picture, this is a different story.
