Posted in: Japan chocolate producers stamping out child labor in supply chains See in context

Not really, the thrust of the article is that these companies ‘have decided to do something about child labor’. Put another way, they can no longer turn a blind eye to what’s happening and the benefits to their balance sheets that it brings. My point is that child labor is a form of slavery which is something Japan is no stranger to - if you read your history books that is. Sorry if this goes against the image of safety and manners you may be accustomed to but it’s just true.

Japan isn’t squeaky clean when it comes to slavery. Read your history books.

You just have to hope there’s camera footage so that this can be proven or otherwise. That’s the ‘black box’ that Shiori Ito talks about.

“So Tourist can still get a discount on JR travel pass available to oversea visitors.” Actually, contrast that with this, “The popular and super useful Japan Rail Pass increased its prices by a whopping 65 percent as of October 1 2023.”

How about just putting on more trains if they want to solve the problem of overcrowding? Oh yes, that costs money!

Yeah, raising prices on holidays, that’ll stop tourists won’t it.

In a way, you’ve got to feel sorry for the kid. Yes, what he did was disgusting and stupid, but who didn’t do stupid things when they were his age. Also, social media pushes young people to do stupid things to get more attention and dopamine hits. Yes, he was an idiot, but his life is pretty much ruined now. Someone should’ve stopped him.

So, just out of interest. I commented ‘get a life’ in reference to the groper, to which a load of people gave the thumbs down. Now. I really don’t care if people downvote or not, we live in a democracy and have free speech to some extent, but do those same people think that telling a man who sexually assaults an innocent women to get a life is somehow inappropriate? Are people more offended by a comment reprimanding a sexual predator than the sexual predator himself?

Occasionally, a student will talk about a celebrity scandal involving drugs. When I ask what drugs were involved, they invariably don’t know. How is this not of significance when different drugs have vastly different outcomes for the user and society. In the case of cannabis, it makes you relaxed, laugh at stupid things, and go a bit paranoid for a while. So why is there always such a fuss in Japan when this particular drug is involved and not, for example, domestic violence caused by excessive alcohol consumption? Tax perhaps?
