Posted in: At 79, Rod Stewart shows no signs of slowing down, with a new swing album with Jools Holland See in context

I think everyone’s mummy was a fan or Rod Stewart at some point. My mummy liked him. How about other reader’s mummies?

What gets me are the complaints when there are no tourists and then more complaints when they come back!

They should get life in prison for this.

This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what’s in store for us regarding climate change. You ain’t seen nothing yet, just wait…

“…bringing a communal container of pickled ginger directly to his mouth and eating from it.” It’s not even a funny ‘prank’ is it?

Posted in: Japan’s school backpacks keep getting more expensive, so now parents can rent them See in context

Actually, they’re not made of high quality leather as pointed out above, it’s fake leather. This argument that, “They may be expensive but they’ll last through six years of school” is just excusing these racketeers. You can buy a very good bag won’t be much more than 10,000 yen. And even if it does (god forbid!) start to look a bit worn, get a new one!

Posted in: Frightening video shows Japan’s stop-and-listen-for-trains driving rule maybe isn’t so silly after all See in context

I still think the rule is stupid even after watching this. There is a blind spot with this particular crossing, but there usually isn’t and you can see if there’s a train without having to come to a full stop and wind your window down(!). It reminds me of the person who drives around at 20mph thinking that they’re being a ‘safety driver’. We don’t stop at crossing lights when they’re on green ‘just in case’.

Posted in: More Japanese women buying Valentine's Day chocolates for themselves See in context

Women buy chocolates on Valentine’s Day for guys, and then the men reciprocate by buying them a Louis Vuitton handbag on White Day.

Most Japanese people probably have Mongolian or Chinese or Korean ancestry. It’s all just a matter of how far back you go.

Posted in: Only 20% of public high schools in Japan have foreign student quotas See in context

I heard an oldish Japanese person talking about how it was going to be difficult to tell who was ‘pure’ Japanese in the future when more foreigners came here for work. Just the casual use of the word ‘pure’ hints at the racism simmering just under the surface in this polite country.

Posted in: 'Setsubun' bean-throwing festival held across Japan See in context

Last year, we only had cans of beans in our house. This made the usual throwing the beans out of the window custom rather troublesome and I’m now being sued by my neighbor for a mild head injury.

Posted in: Teachers on leave for mental illness in Japan hit record high See in context

Th hours these guys are expected to put in is insane and the pay they get in return probably works out close to minimum wage when factoring in the hours. It’s like they’re expected to do the work of five different people. Well, I’m sure the government are laughing all the way to the bank with the extra wages they don’t have to pay.

Posted in: Mount Fuji climbers from Yamanashi side to be charged ¥2,000 as tourism rises See in context

I’ve got zero interest in doing the tourist thing of climbing Mount Fuji. Any person serious about hiking will tell you that it’s a boring mountain - nice from afar but far from nice. And, you should never have to pay to climb a mountain or be out in nature.

Agree with the above. This kind of thing always brings the xenophobes and racists out. Why is it that anyone can ‘be’ American (for example), but being Japanese has different parameters for so many.
