Posted in: Japan confirms 4th case of Omicron variant infection See in context

Having people skip quarantine means infections slip into the country undetected, normally it would not be so bad because there is corona in the country already, but with the variants it just mean probably some people are already spreading omicron without nobody knowing it.

How about not bringing the boosters but sending them to undervaccinated countries? it seems we are lucky with Omicron, but the next variant may not be so weak so just help everybody get vaccinated.

Who is interested in using their smartphone while peeing? people that cant stop fidgeting with their phones for the minute it takes to take a leak really need to see a doctor about it.

Posted in: Tokyo court disrupted by hundreds of maskless anti-vaxxers See in context

As expected the article comments got full of antivaxxers repeating the same lies as ever,

the vaccines are rushed - no they were not.

the vaccines are gene therapy - not they are not

the vaccines have lots of life threatening side effects - no they have not

people being against the vaccines because of lies are not antivaxxers - yes they are

COVID is not dangerous - yes it is

vaccines do not reduce transmission - yes they do

etc.

And then in a few days an article about how antivaxxers get to repeat their lies for free, but of course only on social media, never in articles put forward by the stablished news media, right?

The whole country is full of people that fumble with technology, even inside of these telecommunication companies, I am not surprised scammers can get away with things like these.

Posted in: Japan in talks to procure oral COVID-19 drug for mild symptoms See in context

@prionking

There are already cheap, safe and effective drugs to treat COVID-19 in the early stages, with efficacy up to around 80% depending on when the drugs are given.

And what drugs are those supposed to be? steroids, immunosuppressors, etc? they are being used routinely.

Hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin? they do not work against COVID, that is why they are not used. Try reading scientific reports and metanalysis, it is been months since they were proven so. The only people that still want to push these drugs are antivaccination groups

Posted in: From lab-made embryos to organs: the ethics of stem cell science See in context

I was just reading about fascinating work done by injecting stem cells from one animal into the embryo of another animal modified genetically so it can't develop a liver, or kidneys. The stem cells from the donor have not this genetic modification so they develop into the organ that is missing.

If those cells came from a human and are injected into the embryo of a pig it would mean you created a chimera (with the body of a pig but the liver of a human!) but more importantly you could get that liver for the person that gave the cells and it would be as if it came from his body, you may have to wait for a year or so to get the organ, but for people desperately looking for donors without finding anyone this may not be a problem

Posted in: Hybrid working likely to be worst of both worlds See in context

For me teleworking has been a huge challenge, makes my work much more difficult and brings only limited advantages, maybe for other people it would work better, but as described in the article being at the middle must be hell, just picturing myself in the situations described made my skin crawl. I would just change jobs even for lower salary if I was working like that.

Posted in: Why do women still get judged so harshly for having casual sex? See in context

Men and women are treated differently in many other topics as well, it may be justified, it may not, but it is not going to change in the near future, I get it that change has to begin at some point, but there is no meaning on getting desperate right now trying to change in a couple of decades things that are thousands of years into the collective mind.

I don't like her at all, and her attitude usually repels me completely but if by her actions more attention is brought to the people in sports that are actually in serious mental problems (and not just depressed for winning millions), that is still a plus on my part.

Ivor Cummins, Scott Jensen, Judy Mikovits? even the "HIV doesn't cause AIDS" comments from Mullis? Is this some parallel dimension where people found to be wrong, liars and criminals became examples to follow? I am suprised Wakefield and Robert Kennedy Jr did not make the cut, maybe in the next comment?

Too bad this won't work for neural tissue, people may look younger and have less physical problems, but the mental abilities will go down the same.

You are never going to convince people to have more kids, the real solution is to reform the economy so pensions do not depend as much of having more people paying fees, it is of course very difficult to do it, but not as much as making people have bigger families when it is impossible to do it without going bankrupt.

Posted in: UK researchers aim to infect volunteers to study COVID exposure See in context

Yeah sure, very useful thing, it will help understand the disease and everything, but its an ethical mess that I hope is being considered carefully. One volunteer having an undiscovered comorbidity, one report where people infected have increased risk of a serious disease (cancer, parkinson, whatever) and the Imperial College is going to be in deep trouble.

I wonder how necessary is to actively expose people and assume this big risk, instead of keeping close vigilance of (a lot more) normal people that are naturally at a higher risk (nurses, etc.) until some get infected without researchers having to take responsibility.
