I want to leave Japan from June to September for 4 months. I am quite happy here from October to May. My retirement plan is live in Japan for 8 months and somewhere cooler for 4 months a year while I am still able.

If you have a family then you can make Christmas special wherever you are! Of course, the first thing you need to do is take the day off. I always take Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off. Then nice food, Christmas music and a few drinks with the family and it becomes a special day. I think it would be more difficult to have a good Christmas if you were alone but it is possible.

My 81 year old friend just sold her car and gave up her license. She is lucky because she lives in the center of the city and close to shops and amenities. Although she was shocked to find that there are not enough taxis. She has to wait at least 1 hour to get a taxi!

If the Japanese are so resilient then why is the suicide rate so high?
Is there any evidence to show that Japanese children are more resilient than children from other countries?

Posted in: Japanese gov't appeals for calm as panic rice buying continues See in context
Why are people buying up the rice? If there is a earthquake and power is lost, and water pipes are broke how do they plan to make rice? If power is gone and the rice is made ahead of time and is in the freezer until needed, the rice will go bad quickly once the power is gone. Am I missing something?
You could cook rice on a fire, a portable gas stove or you could have a big mobile battery which could power the rice cooker. Personally, I have a portable gas stove with three gas canisters in reserve and I also have a big mobile battery with a solar power unit. So, as long as I have water I can eat rice indefinately. I just have to hope that my house stays upright or non of this matters!

I have only ever had positive experiences with the police in Japan. I have been here for 17 years and been stopped three times. Once to check my bicycle which was no problem. Another time I got breath tested, which I was happy to do. Finally for a minor traffic infringement which was my fault. All the police offiecrs were friendly and respectful.

Let's think of ways that we can actually help them! Japan can send personal quickly to help with rescue operations and cleaning up. People in Japan can help by donating some money. I personally do not think that thoughts and prayers will help those who need it, but that is just my opinion and I respect everyone's right to a different opinion on the matter.

Posted in: Digitalization drive proving tough for Japanese school teachers See in context
Research suggests that children learn better when reading from paper. They remember less when reading from a screen. On top of that children are using their Chromebooks to play games and watch YouTube. My own children became so obessed with YouTube and games (rather than homework) that I now lock their Chromebooks in a case with a combination lock so they don't use it too much. I think overall technology has had a negative impact on younger children. Why keep pusing more and more technology? Maybe as the tech giants can get more and more cash?
