he territorial claim of the Japanese government on Takeshima is comical. Japanese people know what 'Takeshima' literally means: bamboo island 竹島, but there is no bamboo in Takeshima.

Japanese use to called it 松島 although there are no ‘pine’ trees.

To make a long story short, the name has nothing to do with the presence of certain plant vegetation.

It’s a concept “松竹梅” used for good luck and congratulatory occasion.

http://gogen-allguide.com/si/syouchikubai.html

Go to restaurants in Japan and the meal courses are sometimes separated by ‘松’ ‘竹’ 梅.

I’m quite amazed that people use this argument even today.

As long as Tokyo lays claim on Dokdo the pain felt by Koreans will never heal because it symbolizes the continuation of Japan's savage colonization of Korea.

In terms of international law, what Takeshima 'symbolizes' to Koreans are irrelevant. Koreans, using armed force, took over the islands illegally at the time Japan did not have a self defense force.

While Japan has requested Korea to settle this dispute via International Court Justice on three separate occasions, they refused all of them.

The Liancourt Rocks are under full Korean jurisdiction, so much so that three LDP members including former defence minister Inada tried to visit them FROM Korea but were turned back.

That's false. Inada, et al were planning to Ulluengdo (Korean territory) but were not allowed entry into Korea's Kimpo Airport. This is the kind of childish stuff that Koreans (from citizens to officials) usually conduct without shame.

Again, the matter would be decided by the Diet and I suppose if the voters didn't agree, then the voters would vote them out in the next election. Unless it involves a change to the constitution, such as Article 9, then voters don't get to decide the laws passed by the Diet.

But why would a legislator take that risk without confirming it to his/her constituents?

Where are the voters on the Oct sales tax increases?

This was decided by DPJ era and was also accepted by LDP.

here are parties in the Diet, such as the Komeito, which supports giving foreigners with PR the right to vote.

Yes. Most vocal during the opposition party days. But now?

f there were any major changes to voting, such as allowing/enabling residents with PR the right to vote, that would be a matter for the government and Diet and not the "Japanese voting population".

Nope. It would be the matter of the voting public since they are the ones who will elect legislators who endorses such legislation

Point is far too many people here in Japan do not understand what cashless means, hence this guy, paying with cash, and assuming it was "cashless".

Of course they do. When they use their card for a certain transaction, he conducted a cashless transaction.

When he took out cash to charge his card, he fully understands that he conducted a cash transaction. But in your mind, you cannot have it both ways and that person has violated the sacred rule of cashless.

I wanted to slap him upside his head!

You need to broaden the definition of ‘cashless’.

For me, I simply don’t want to carry loose change. Or dig into my wallet to pay for things.

Not SK playing victim, here, lad.

Oh please. It’s SOP for Korea for decades.

In this case, they played as victims to WTO, RCEP, U.S., and China. And their so-called retaliatory measures such as removing Japan off of their so called “white list” (which Japan simply brushed it off )and cancellation of GSOMIA.

So getting back to the point, the status is given at sole discretion of Japan. If Korea wants it back, at least try to make an attempt to be humble and courteous. By playing the victim like I stated above, the chances are slim to none and slim had just left the building.

You seem to be claiming that Kyoto and NHK knew more quickly than the Korean JCS. That's a questionable inference based on your quote alone.

0h no. It’s even worse. Korea’s Joint Chief of Staff announced the incident 30 minutes after the Japan counterparts.

https://news.tv-asahi.co.jp/news_international/articles/000162744.html

Korea does not posses a satellite that monitors NK’s BM and thus relies on U.S. and Japan for the information. On the other hand Korea does possess radar and Aegis to verify the location of the launch and trajectory. This time, however, the Korean government report was 30 minutes after Japanese government. It appears Korean side could not determine the launch detail earlier. Also, there is a discrepancy between Japan and Korea in regards to the initial report of the landing distance. Although there are concerns as a result of Korea’s withdrawal of GSOMIA, the agreement will still be i effect until November 22nd and therefore, both will exchange information relating to this incident.

Actually Trump gave his seal of approval. Trump said he was OK with NK's missile tests as long as they weren't ICBMs.

Notice that on this original article, the tests didn’t reach Japan’s EEZ. If that’s the case, where do you think these missiles were targeted towards if it’s for real?

Let’s not forget this part.

“Korean Joint Chief of Staff reported the incident at 7:36 AM while Kyodo and NHK reported it 7:24 AM and 7:28 AM, respectively.”

No, SK is not obliged one iota to do as Japan commands, my friend. Who is Japan to demand such things? And Japan absolutely DOES neet to provide proof of its accusations if it makes them internationally.

It doesn’t. We already covered this on another article. This is a privilege given by Japan to states and not a right. If Korea wants Japan to reconsider, they should be begging instead of playing the over leveraged victim card.

As much as I hate many policies under Trump administration, I have to say I like his market instincts on certain things (like this negotiation with Japan). He knows where to poke at opponent to get what he wants and knows a weakness when he sees one. No positive outcomes for Japan in this unfortunately.

Joint Statement of the United States and Japan issued September 26, 2018

5. The agreement mentioned above is designed to be mutually beneficial, and, in conducting those negotiations, the United States and Japan will respect positions of the other government:

For the United States, market access outcomes in the motor vehicle sector will be designed to increase production and jobs in the United States in the motor vehicle industries; and

For Japan, with regard to agricultural, forestry, and fishery products, outcomes related to market access as reflected in Japan’s previous economic partnership agreements constitute the maximum level.

Pretty much the same tariff schedule aligned with TPP which Trump aborted because he wanted to destroy Obama’s legacy. But in the end, Trump gets credit for it.

Hankyoreh, quoting sources in the presidential office, said that the administration was around Tuesday leaning toward ending the General Security of Military Information Agreement, or GSOMIA.

In a speech delivered on the country's Liberation Day on Aug 15 marking the end of Japanese colonial rule, South Korean President Moon Jae In indicated his willingness to "gladly join hands" if Japan chose the path of dialogue.

A subsequent lack of movement by the Japanese government, even though his office provided portions of the speech to Tokyo in advance in a show of goodwill, served as a "decisive factor," according to the paper.

Kim accused Japan of having ignored South Korea's repeated calls for dialogue and other conciliatory steps to resolve bitter trade and history disputes. He said Japan's such "breach of diplomatic etiquette" has undermined "our national pride."

In regards to trade dispute, METI has requested a meeting repeatedly to address Korea's past export controls but "postponed them on every occasion, providing a unilateral rationale on each occasion, even after both sides agreed on the specific date for the scheduled dialogue."

This went on for THREE YEARS and now they have the audacity to talk about "dialogue and other conciliatory steps" after the fact.

As to the history dispute (1965 agreement and Korea's High Courts asinine judgement), it's settled. Japanese government has repeatedly told the Korean government to abide by the international law.

"......3.Japan once again conveys to the Republic of Korea its position as elaborated above, and strongly demands that the Republic of Korea take appropriate measures, including immediate actions to remedy such breach of international law.

Furthermore, if appropriate measures are not taken immediately, Japan will continue to examine all possible options, including international adjudication and counter measures, and take resolute actions accordingly from the standpoint of, inter alia, protecting the legitimate business activities by Japanese companies..."

Say what you will about the Koreans, but this headline is patently false and inflammatory. The intelligence is a rolling deal which can be renewed annually. The Koreans haven't "terminated" anything: they simply chose not to renew the deal for another year.

thereafter unless either Party notifies the other in writing through the diplomatic channel ninety days in

And why are talking about a new system that hasn’t been implemented versus that of current on site BMD?

The point of contention here is whether GSOMIA hurts Japan’s BMD or Korea’s

Significantly, for the past two decades, the US has taken steps to strengthen Japan’s missile defense capability, based on the two countries’ shared interest in countering China.
