"As an aside, here is an article on the death rates in Japan for this year through July, which has some speculative discussion as to why this is:

https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20201012/p2a/00m/0na/013000c"

Yes it was piece. Here are some highlights of the article:

May's breakdown by cause of death shows that up until that month, the greatest drop was seen in patients dying of respiratory illnesses, at 9,066 fewer deaths. Among them, influenza deaths had fallen by 2,270 people, and pneumonia by 5,863.

So in the middle of pandemic of respiratory illness, Japan lost fewer people.

This law holds people liable with fines of up to 50,000 yen for ignoring government-mandated restrictions and infecting others.

50,000 Yen is not enough. they should do jail time.

Good Job PM Suga. Vietnam is a growing market and well postion to help Japan. I read that Japan just shipped some new train sets to Vietnam and Vietnam is part of the TPP. Win-Win for both countries.

"Adding to unease over possible interference in academic freedom, the education ministry urged public schools to display a black cloth symbolizing mourning along with the national flag and to hold a moment of silence to show respect for the late Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone, whose state-funded funeral was held Saturday."

and may I ask what is the problem with showing respect for the late PM? Harvard Law did same thing for Ginsburg.

"Abe had vowed to restore Japan’s waning diplomatic stature and national pride by promoting ultra-nationalistic policies such as traditional family values and amending the post-World War II pacifist constitution to allow a greater overseas military role and capability for Japan."

So much for impartial journalism.

Another day and yet another poll which states the obvious. It is time that Japan end this K drama once and for all. I see no reason why Japan should have any dealings with South Korea on any level. Japan should focus her diplomatic and economic energy on building ties with India, South East Asia, Europe and North America. South Korea is a waste of time.

So when I use my Go to eat coupon at the mom and pop ramen shop. It doesn't help them?

When I use my go to travel coupon to stay at local inn and spend money in the local economy it does not help them?

Please explain. Please use economics if you can.

Japan does not love China or the Chinese people, well maybe Japan loves Chinese women and food, so I guess Japan should stay in, and expand the Quad.

"The government set aside 86.0 billion yen to put toward an existing subsidy program aimed at encouraging domestic manufacturers to reshore their overseas production bases. The push to bring business activity back to Japan is intended to help shore up supply chains in case of emergencies."

Good. Japan need to bring these jobs back to Japan. The government needs to spend more and bring all our production back from China.

Maybe, South Korea and all of the other countries who are complaining will allow Japan to build water tanks in their country. I wonder what they will say. By the way, other countries do exactly the same thing.

I'd say this is par for the course when it comes to handling disasters.

It's been 9 years since 3/11 and there are still people in temporary housing.

Prefabricated temporary housing units in the three hardest-hit prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima are still occupied by 709 people.

http://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/13205445

From the article:

The number of evacuees stands at 47,773 spread across the nation. Most of them fled their homes after the triple meltdown at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant in Fukushima Prefecture.

I guess their supposed to go back into radiation zone.

From the same article:About 320,000 victims took refuge in makeshift housing at the peak period. The figure now stands at 5,884.

Prefabricated temporary housing units in the three hardest-hit prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima are still occupied by 709 people.
