I think the Japanese health insurance is wonderful. Most people here would rather just keep the money they should be paying in for drinking probably.

As a gun owner in Japan, I can tell you one thing; the father will be in big trouble! My guns can be checked at any time, unannounced. If the police find them out of the locker, or even if they are in the locker but the locker is unlocked or damaged in some way, I would lose the guns and the licence. The rules are very strict here, even down to how many screws have to affix the locker to a wall.

Posted in: Why is there so much criticism of the quake relief effort in Haiti, whether it is of the U.S., Japan, China or others? See in context

It's because the reason Haiti is in such a poor state anyway is down to one country...the USA. After strangling Haiti with sanctions and sponsored coups, it's a bit rich that they are now taking the glory as the benevolent, kind peacekeepers!

The original Japanese story according to Asahi is kinda different from this translation:

http://www.asahi.com/national/update/1124/SEB200911240005.html

There is nothing about someone seeing him jump. Rather, they found blood stains leading from the entrance to the ninth floor...

This is very sad, but unfortunately I fear this poor girl won't be the last. The proliferation of snack bars/hostess clubs in this country means scores of women will continue to be viewed as second-class citizens whose role is to relieve older guys' sexual tensions/pervert fantasies. The system is set up for young, attractive girls to fall into this line of work. How else do girls of 18/19 afford designer handbags and expensive clothes? Certainly not through any regular job. Also, if a young girl wants to put herself through years of university, how else can she earn enough money without having to work every waking hour, and thereby ruining her chances of graduating with a good grade? The system is rotten. And it will never change, because 90% of Japanese lawmakers are.....surprise, surprise, old men!

99% of public restrooms in Japan don't even have soap! What's the point of gargling (with water!) or wearing those stupid masks when everything you touch is infested with who knows what?!

Posted in: HIV/AIDS continues steep increase in Japan See in context

I wonder how many people die in Japan, say in their mid-40s and 50s, without the doctors even recognizing the fact that they had AIDS? Instead, putting their death down to a secondary cancer, for example, (advanced AIDS allows cancers to develop much more easily). Given the woeful, indeed dangerous, lack of medical knowledge amongst doctors here, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the figure was actually quite high.....plus, I am sure there is a lot of pressure not to sign-off a death certificate with HIV/AIDS as the cause of death.

You only have to look at the booming sex industry here to see why HIV continues to increase. Combined with the woeful lack of knowledge about STDs in general, it's a disaster in the making. Most of my male Japanese friends are always bragging about how they never use condoms, even when visiting brothels. And I can count on one hand the number of Japanese girls who have brought up the issue of protected sex BEFORE I raised it.... I dread to think what will happen come the year 2030 or so.

Posted in: Newborn boy dies after being found in Tokyo Internet cafe toilet See in context

Anyone who has dated young Japanese women will know that basic knowledge of sexual/pregnancy matters is woefully, indeed dangerously, low. In six years of living here I can only recall two occasions when a Japanese girl brought up the issue of protection/contraception before I mentioned it myself. Also, it's a sad fact, but abortion in Japan is an accepted means of contraception. I know of a few girls who have had more than one abortion and they talk about it as if they just lot their 'Hello Kitty' key-chain etc...it's no big deal to many girls here. Similarly, if a girl can't afford an abortion, leaving it to die would be the next choice. Such a girl really doesn't have to make that big a leap between the two. The fundamental issue here is attitudes to sex in Japan. The cutesy image fronted by all the snack bars/brothels doesn't help to make people realize that there are serious things to think about. This means unplanned pregnancies ans abortions, not to mention STDs, which must be through the roof here.
