However, social equality has never been 100% successful, even with an "hafu" president. Employment rate still hovers at around 17% for African Americans, whereas whites make up less than 10% on that spectrum. Having social equality didn't work in this instance. Juxtapose that with Japan, a nation whose principles were founded on the Meiji Constitution; now defunct American mandated constitution which stipulates that all people have equal rights under the present-day Constitution. That includes universal suffrage for women and anti-discriminatory laws which are intended to protect all citizens. These constitutional guarantees are loosely enforced because most Japanese do not care. This is owing to the fact that the people simply do not have to care as long as the government doesn't care, because the letter of the law has no weight. In other words, how can you ask the Japanese to embrace,accept, and include hafu, quarter, and non pure blood into their social dynamic when only the Meiji system of governance is deeply rooted in their psyche??

Meiji Emperor separated the undesirables from mainstream society, even native Japanese people who had tattoos ( irezumi). This was designed to create a cohesive social dynamic that is still evident today as it was centuries ago.

Why can't "hafu" embrace their uniqueness in society without demanding society accept and embrace them as Japanese? You were born in Japan and probably speak Japanese, but that doesn't mean Japan has to change. You have to change and you have to accept that you will always be different. Japanese people tolerate different aspects of its society, but not embrace it. They simply do not have to. In order for Japan to embrace 'hafu' we'd have to embrace all peoples of the world regardless of their racial background. I do think that awareness is a positive step in the right direction, though. Well...on a case by case basis.

Hmm....I think if he focused more on the food instead of the interior decor, the whole set up would look more attractive.

Discrimination is bad, but I don't believe the Zaitokukai supports the discrimination of non-Japanese. If Korean nationals are taking advantage of the system, then it needs to be investigated and dealt with. And Rights groups need to make this known through peaceful demonstration. There's a big difference between using prostitutes during a war, and an organized system of sex slavery.

What do you consider a first world country? You mean Anglo Saxon countries? Sex slavery and prostitution were both initiated by first world countries, this is why they also have laws condemning them. A Japanese politician who is outspoken, as long as his comments are not racist and sexist, and that they don't incite violence should be heard, listened to, and accepted as good discourse and healthy debate.

Mr. Putin is a clever guy. I think he's interested in developing the islands, and this may be why he's in negotiations with Mr. Abe. It's a way to redirect revenue so that Russia doesn't have to pay to make the place more profitable. If Mr. Putin makes concessions by allowing Japanese venture capitalist to come in and develop the place then this could become a huge draw for both countries. So it's not about the energy per se. Mr. Putin keeps his enemies close for a good reason.

Wise move on the part of the Catholic church. A man who has a long history working with the poor deserves the Papacy. The truest work of God comes from serving others, not pushing for gay agendas and other government reform. Church should stay out of politics and big institutions. All she's doing is fueling the hysteria that is causing discrimination. I wish JT would properly vet their stories before publishing them.

The OP, and Stephan Jez, and to the editors of this paper. The residence of Fukushima are not leaving. If anything, this is a temporary displacement. The media has done a pitiful job of portraying the events in Fukushima and the lies and misrepresentation has to stop. Just because a few Fukushima residents get their faces on the paper and decry what's happening doesn't mean that there is a real radiation problem. It is faulty logic. Do not portray Fukushima in this way. It is just bad press filled with slippery slope analogies.

So many great comments. Porn stars will never see retirement as a clear option. Most if any will occassionally do part-time porn if they retire, but never ever retire fully. Those that have chosen to retire completely often struggle with depression and anxiety and an overall disconnect with society. They rarely have anything in common with women who lead ordinary lives.
