I don't even know where to begin with this. It's silly enough that these morons suggest "eating the fruits of the stricken areas will prove they are safe", but these fools really don't learn. You do NOT advertise something by pointing out that if someone doesn't die from it it's surely safe.
But you may be able to silence the fearmongerers that by putting your money (or your life) where your mouth is that the issue might be being overblown. DO NOT for a second assume I think there is nothing wrong with the way that TEPCO have handled this, or that the displaced deserve no sympathy, but the fear that all things nuclear are going to kill us all has to be stopped

@kurisupisu Point being, generally speaking (there are many exceptions) politicians are not exactly famous for being the bravest group of our species, so you think that they would put themselves in danger for such an event? Doesn't make much sense does it? Or perhaps there is not that much danger in Iwaki - what do you think?

The Internet is just a network, nothing really to get addicted to. The content, on the other hand, is what people are goggling at and can't pull themselves away from. Question is, what is it that people are so glued to? Is it SNS? Games? News, p@rn? All of the above? The article doesn't go into emough depth OR the real consequences. People are withdrawing from society very rapidly, and also it kills me to see people walking and staring at their smartphones - dangerous and inconsiderate

Last I checked, "international waters" meant "international waters", and China has committed no wrong doing. Perhaps the Japanese government and military are a little paranoid after their dear leader's speech the other day? Is Japan also going to claim the international waters?
China is "testing" Japan, and Japan is showing they can react. Recall the Cold War if you will, and regular sorties for UK fighters to intercept CCCP bombers. I think some call it Sabre rattling. Anyway, as odd as it seems, it actually a good way for both sides to stay sharp, and learn about each others tactics. The only odd thing is that it actually gets reported.

Can you define "harms way"? Are you expecting another tsunami to hit the Iwaki coast at that time?

Carbon and gas isn't exactly the cleanest solution, but at least the worries of mass nuclear fallout aren't there. Easier to wash off a bit of soot than strontium and caesium.
You sum up in these few words how wrong the thinking on carbon fuels is. This is a tragic decision.

there should be no judge deciding on the quality of the performance
But in football, referees do have to judge on the quality of performance of some players, especially Suarez, who performs the most beautiful diving routines seen outside of a pool.The definition of sport in dictionary satisfies me that skating is a sport, even though I don't particularly enjoy it. Is ski jumping a sport?

Ouch! Bad photo! All the same, kudos on the win. It's nice to see she's holding it together and keeping it for the win. Sochi should be fun!
Haha - She IS spinning around at something close to 90rpm. Wonder how I would look at that speed. I don't have the elastic skin of someone in their 20s! Ah, I don't have the athletic ability either!

Had a stroppy counter girl in Heathrow taunt me that I wouldn't be able to get on an international flight an hour before the estimated departure time.
Did the ticket say that you had to check in at least 60 mins before flight? As you probably know, airlines tend to overbook flights and the flight may have been full already, and since they could deliver the bad news in a way that didn't harm them, you lost out. I use them a lot, and could be just luck, but never really had any issues. Can't wait for Skymark to start flying that route. A380's in all business class? Hmm.

@Bos
This new "Fu_k-Up-y" mascot is proof-positive that the "300-euro-per-hour PLUS $1 per word PLUS performance bonus PLUS telephone-access fee" that I charged PR consulting clients in Japan ten years ago was actually grossly underpriced and worth far more than every red cent.
Would you care to highlight which marketing campaign that you devised for 300eu+$1/word (why different currencies?), etc, that you wrote that gave your clients such a profile boost?

IF, and I'm not saying that you MUST,you compare UK and Japan, UK chose their most famous ambassador to music, in the shape of the lead singer (one of them) of the band that shaped a lot of modern music - i.e. Paul McCartney. Is there any one or any band in the same league? Put aside for one moment if you like him/them or not, just try to list any Japanese band that has had significant global exposure, and any influence on music direction. YMO is the best I can think of, and actually, not a bad choice - are they available for the opening ceremony?

@Harry
Even if he did reach a financial settlement with the driver he should have been charged.
Someone would need to press charges, and the taxi driver, in his infinite benevolence, has decided that getting money out of Mr Maezono is better than putting him throught the pain of a court case, which the taxi driver would need to take time off work to testify, etc. Police would only press charges IF they thought he was a danger to the public, which would set such a huge precident, as tehn they would need to arrest 35ths of the adult population everytime they got drunk as they would "potentially" become a danger to the public. Taxi driver quids in, Maezono off the hook, but embarrassed.

The train conductor was right to make the emergency stop after receiving information of a threat of an explosion, as erroneous as it turned out to be.
Yes, if he had actually followed up. I don't think an explosion would be more deadly if the train was moving or not, and the detail here doesn't suggest (yet) that the train was ever evacuated. Had he followed up, he would have soon realised, as would any of us, that the culprit was a total R's, and should have been ignored. You are absolutely spot on when you say you bet he sounded obnoxious, which is a league away from being dangerous!

When I was a kid we had bomb scares all the time thanks to the IRA... now we have different terrorists trying to kill us. I would rather people were vigilant than just saying forget it. Mistakes happen, but no-one was killed or injured...
Agree. I had ir from when I was a kid, right through to adulthood, hence I think people should really be more in control of themselves in public. Otherwise the volume of false alarms would just rocket. Rather focus on the good people who are vigilant, lets baton down on the idiots who cause panic like this at 9am in the morning.

“If I was Boeing, I would hold their feet to the fire,” said Lance Gatling, founder of aerospace and defense consultancy Nexial Research in Tokyo. “International competition for what they build can only increase.”
Auto-loyalty is long gone. If Boeing can't compete by selling airworthy goods at a reasonable price then they will lose market share - it's obvious. If they then pull out of long term partnerships to spite that market move, then they may find themselves with even less of a footing in one of the "world’s biggest aviation markets", right?
