From the news in Manila yesterday, they said the Philippjne ship left because they needed food and water (which I do not believe). The Philippines wants diplomacy and China's diplomacy style is by sending a third ship. ( Who's bad now?)I I also read and article yesterday about the standoff of Vietnam with China few decades ago and the Chinese side killed 70 Vietnamese at the standoff. I hope this won't happen again.

Even if the experts say it's"safe" to live there. But the paranoia and uncertainty are the few factors killing those people and for crying out loud they don't have to stay there if the are not comfortable in the first place. I really don't like the gaman culture here, it is sometimes too much and illogical. Living there is like living in a zombie land, the zombies might not kill you, but the fear from them might. People, you don't need to live there. Just think why those kids have to carry dosimeters in the first place. They have to wear long sleeves, a cap ,a mask and can't play outside without testing the ground for radiation first? Common! Go to a place where you are comfortable and free from worries about radiation and the memories of the disaster. You can always start a new life somewhere, It's not easy but it's possible.

To those people here who think that the radiation levels there are safe and there's no need to worry, then please try to live there with your family and eat food grown from there. And tell us about it. Living with radiation 20 times higher than before is not safe, Why Because that's the not natura level that their bodies are used to. Unfortunately, they are allowed to stay there because TEPCO has LAWYERS who says so, therefore the gov't can just argue. I think you've read the news about the legal battle against TEPCO and a golf organization.

If the there was an increase of natural radiation, then they can stay there, but if the radiation comes from cesium and other particles, I think that's a big problem, don't you think?

Let me check the date...What? It's 2012? They've come up with this just now? I've been complaining about this since I got here. Such a waste of talent and skills for Japanese women. Finally the gov't came up with this now. There are many vacant elementary schools and junior high schools too in Japan, closed because there were no students.

Sometimes I think these kinds of crimes happen because of the small houses/apartments in Japan plus the factor of all-too grown ul children living/taking care of their parents. I could be wrong. I hope this won't ever happen again. It's terrible.

Why are they targeting people who want to join the Unions? All people in Japan knows about the bad economy but it doesnt mean they will be satisfied with terrbily low pay. no benefits and contractual jobs. Many people are complaining because of the new norm nowdays where everyone has no more benefits, work harder for less and don't complain. Go ahead with some people supporting this, the "iron fist" might hit you one day, but I hope not.

What a terrible story. But it's really strange that the 30 year old sOn couldn't support the family. Even if he couldn't work, the parents could have ask the welfare office for support. In my city, you can borrow 20,000 yen immediately in case of emergencies, but you just need to pay it back afterwards. My theory is they froze to death because they didn't have electricity because they don't cut water supply here immediately.

Funny that some women defend this kind of clothing. But the thing here is they are not a woman yet, they are still kids or girls and they don't have the right to make school uniforms into fashionable clothes. If Is this is ok then maybe in the future we might see female bank employees, nurses and OLs turn their uniforms into sexy clothes before and after the leave work? please stop defending this because it's wrOng from the very beginning. If you don't want people to stare at you, wear proper clothes and act decently.

I really agree with some of the posts here. I think the guy had been stressed out taking care of his father. I condone the killing and then father should have been put in to a home. We used to take care of my Father and it is really tough and stressful to take care of an old person. There are the toilet issues and other things. In Japan it is not easy to take a day off so it is difficult to balance your responsibilities at home and your work. The only solution here is not to burden the family members looking after them by seeking professional help or if there are available homes, they should be admitted there.

I think it is not about selfishness here. It's about sadness, boredom and the kankenai attitude that's killing the beautiful people here. Sometimes it makes me think that Japanese people's rationale is that their work is their life and after their left work, so as their relations with their "work friends." Personally this country is very sad and I hope we foreigners help change some of the attitudes of the locals. Let them appreciate life and look that there's a bigger world out there.

How about adjusting the thermostat from 19C to at least 22C or 24C. This is very common for elementary and junior high schools because they don't use the heaters much. And they wear those tiny T-shirts and shorts for their PE class.

Posted in: How foreigners’ daily lives change when they live in Japan See in context

I love Japan and the daily conveniences here. But I don't about you guys, but I feel "less happier" here and I think most Japanese are. I have a student who is studying my language and she said even though she's been to other countries, she felt happy only after visiting my country. She made friends there--real friends. She works as a trainer at an airport and she said to me that her staff "feel empty". And I kinda feel that way during my first few years here. That's why she wants to return to my country again. Another thing about Japan is I don't like to idea of not meeting friends anymore, even for coffee. I don't understand why, Japan is very convenient and you can travel anywhere fast yet meeting your friend even once a month is impossible. Most foreigners became busier and don't have time to meet friends. I hope you guys resist this, Find time for your friends and family. Most of the time because people don't seem to talk here and you can't even genuinely laugh. Personally, I don't like to drink coffee alone after work. I think foreigners here in Japan should show their cultures proudly. The reason many Japanese go to other countries because they want to feel free . I think they admire that a lot from other countries. Why not show them that here? I love the good food, clean environment, the nicest and the most honest people in the world here and the high tech toilets of course. But as for me, personally and culturally, I only accept things that will make me happier. And show Japanese the good things about my culture. I guess that's why I am here.

I think there are no studies that relate this problem to workplaces in Japan. Which field is the most stressful and most likely to cause suicide? There are many demanding jobs in Japan with terribly low pay. For me, this is one of the factors. Another one is many Japanese are afraid to talk to each other (eventhough most Japanese are nice anyway). This is especially for gils/women who thinks that every man who looks o wants to speak to them on the train are chikan or strange (can't blame them totally anyway). I think they should loosen up and stop limiting themselves too much. This will make them happier I believe.

I admire the idea of helping the homeless but them not receiving a wage is not good at all. It's like the idea of better than nothing. Imagine the city has to hire tourist info attendants, It should cost them more. There are many govt projects out there. The homeless could be hired for Tohoku cleanup and other things Sapporo needs. In my country, we have "Food for Work" program. If there are disasters, ordinary people without any jobs or the victims themselves can work for food (this excludes help from the Social Welfare and NPOs so it helps them live their normal lives) To honest, Japan needs more compassion. Sometimes I feel they should open up their hearts a little more.

Posted in: China sends patrol ship to disputed waters See in context

Chuan,

I think people here are not against China but they are against China's attitude "to prepare for combat" They are worried about a war sparking in the region. If for many people, war is just a word, I'll tell you their concern, if there will be war - "people will die" because these countries are fighting for islands of money. Is it really ok to start another war? That's the concern here. Everyone here is for the prosperity of China, and that includes me. But the attitude of combat because China has bigger guns now is not what the region needs right now. Being the bigger and older brother here in Asia, China should set an example of humility and use its influence to achieve peace, not war. It should use its power for peaceful purposes and not to scare small counties with its power.

If I remember it right China said their military is for peaceful purposes? Or it will make some military personnel rest in peace? Now it shows how arrogant this country is (not the people). When they say combat, I think it literally means "to kill." When are guns for peaceful purposes anyway?

Post partum depression it seems. I am worried about the medical practice of some countries after giving birth. After few days of hospitalization, they already want the patient out even after a major procedure. In my country, you can stay in the hospital as long as you want until you are comfortable already to leave the hospital. I have a friend in Japan who was asked to leave the hospital after one week when he had his kidney transplant. I feel they are more concerned here with the room your are occupying than the patient.

These debris are most likely radioactive. We all know that The other half of the 20km no-go zone is the Pacific Ocean, then it only means those terabecquerels of radiation went there. And then again, water flows and the wind blows, who knows where the radiation went. Maybe it's heading to Hawaii and other islands in the Pacific.

@Alita Schratwiese,

Do people have to be paranoid to run away from radiation or is it "common sense?" If there is basically evidence of radioactive rain, so we will just treat it only like "news" and not reality? I can't imagine people not minding this and probably regret 30 years later. Just think of pregnant women with their few month old babies being exposed to 57 mcrosieverts, fukushima radiation, natural radiation and pollution. You might say everyone is ok because nobody is dying of radiation----yet.

"She called the engagement off in March after which I was so devastated that I quit my job. I wanted to see her and talk with her, but she refused,” Izaki was quoted by police as saying" The man was devasted because of that.

"Izaki spent several nights waiting in front of her house. The man was warned to stay away from the woman and was asked to write an official declaration, stating that he would not approach her again. During the same month, he attempted to hang himself at the university’s restroom, police said." Again, because of rejection and no closure in the relationship.

Again, I am not saying what the guy did was right, I think it was terrible. I am just saying that the guy was so devasted psychologically.
