Posted in: Tourist arrested in Japan for striking convenience store clerk over 3-yen bag altercation See in context

Bags Use to be FREE the clerk should have kept that in mind.

What do you mean? How would a tourist know that? And it's the clerk's job to ensure the store gets paid for what it needs to get paid for.

The clerk made an unnecessary fuss over a ¥3 bag.

Cost shouldn't matter. When you use the self-register it asks you if you need a bag so you can scan the bar code, so there is no excuse for the tourist. Someone suggested he was probably drunk, which is possible and would help explain, but still no excuse.

The weird part is the clerk following the client all the way outside. There isn't enough context provided, but what has more likely happened, is that he called on the customer "okyaku-san, okyaku-san" and the foreigner obviously did not notice so the clerk went after him.

Posted in: 'Not paying any dating expenses at all' listed as domestic violence by Japanese gov't agency See in context

Only a fool would allow this to happen to him or her.

I think you are missing the point. The whole purpose of laws to protect against domestic violence, is that the weaker partner is usually unable to push back. I completely agree with you on your stance though, I will pay if I want to pay. I will not pay if someone "expects" me to pay.

Posted in: Alberto Fujimori, former president of Peru who was convicted for human rights abuses, dies at 86 See in context

I am always amazed by some of the comments, but always come to terms with them as they are personal opinions of the writers. No one can defend abuses that Fujimori and his government might have committed, but don't put your country in a pedestal arguing there are no abuses in other countries too and those presidents are never held accountable either. It is also hard to take seriously comments of those not familiar with Latin American culture, customs and history. Most presidents in developing countries have appeared as dictators to rich countries, because a strong hand is sometimes required to make changes that are good for the country even if people don't know it is good for them. Again, not condoning any abuses but I am pretty sure Peru is better off because of Fujimori and that is undeniable.

Posted in: Aso praises Kamikawa but says she is ‘not very beautiful,’ and calls her ‘Kamimura’ See in context

It's not untrue, though, and even Kamikawa-san would probably agree. She's 71 years old. Nobody expects her, at her age, to be seen as what most people would call "beautiful."

I don’t think I agree with your views on politics but I do agree with your comment here. If I were to give Aso the benefit of the doubt, I think the “not beautiful” was his way of adding emphasis to her accomplishments. In contrast, some people are seen more positively than they deserve just because of their looks. She is good. Period.
