If they had made it to Japan alive, what would have been their fate? Sent back? Detention camp? Labeled spies? A warm welcome as refugees with help to resettle?

They go to South Korea where they will settle. Japan doesn't accept any refugees (that's even a fat chance they'd accept Korean ones), they don't believe in refugees.

Sharp is now a pyramid scheme operation, forcing their employees to buy their products to earn their incomes.

The trio were hammered by competition from lower-cost rivals, particularly from South Korea and Taiwan.

Stop making excuses that so outdated. Labour costs in electronic sectors in South Korea are higher than Japan. More importantly, much of the stuff from both Japan and Korea are manufactured in China or South East Asia. But yeah, keep on holding onto that crutch of an excuse.

They broadcasted the final match but since it couldn't do big ratings, they chose to show it in the early morning.

Alex80, please stop, OK? I don't know if you're really Italian, or Japanese who lived in Italy and who's pretending to be Italian. I don't care. But please keep facts straight, don't claim things that aren't true. They announced that they will not live broadcast the final gold match game, right after Japan lost to Korea. well before the gold game started.

Assuming that a tv channel act in a certain way because of envy, rather than for economic reasons, is paranoia. And also childish.

Considering that much of Japanese TV is now controlled by Japanese government, yes I find that childish.

Koreans the best in the world ? Ranked 8th coming into the tournament more than 400 points behind top ranked Japan and 2nd ranked USA.. Sorry..they're 8th and beat Japan on a colossal manager's error..

Yes, I kept hearing the Japanese broadcaster constantly saying "first ranked Japan", "best in the world Japan", to ad nauseam. They really believe Japan is number one? Then how come all the Japanese position players in the major leagues, all currently stink? Japan number one? LOL, say that to a MLB fan sitting with his beer in Mid West, and you'll be laughed out of town. For your information, Korea and Japan has almost identical even record when it comes to all time head to head international matches. Japan isn't that much better than S.Korea. But both are certainly no MLB where all the best talents want to play.

LOL at Alex80 bringing up irrelevant topic up to shift the criticisms against Japan. But the equivalent of 2002 and this would have been South Korea refusing to broadcast the World Cup 2002 because they weren't in it, and fans refusing to attend the games and World Cup winning ceremony because they lost to their arch rivals they hate. But anyway...

I'm curious about this. The article says attendance was 40,311, and the Tokyo Dome's capacity is 55,000 (75% full). Is there something I am missing?

If you had seen the game, the stadium had echoes from all the empty seats. It's fairly obvious they were counting ticket sales - the ticket sales where they expected Japan to be in the final. But when it didn't work out, Japanese media all of a sudden didn't care anymore. I guess a lot of them just decided to stay home and do something else instead of watching their hated rivals play.

What's even galling is all the Japanese boycotting the medal ceremony. Now that's so class.

Yeap. :Horrible blatant ethics from Japan. They not only lost on the field, they also lost in fair play. They played this game with stadium two thirds empty. Then when the gold medal ceremony was being held, it was totally empty except for few South Korean fans. All the Japanese who did show up for the game (well of course they sold these tickets thinking Japan would be there instead and these fans couldn't unload their tickets), just stood up and left. All the teams should boycott this tournament. They set up this tournament to glorify Japan, and when it didn't work, they picked up all the toys and left with a big huff. So mature, I tell ya.

Japanese TV will push back the final gold game match to a recorded (yes, they won't even bother a live broadcast because Japan is not in the final) broadcast on 3:45am. Now that really is disgraceful. Obviously the whole thing was bought, paid, and paid for by the Japanese sponsors. This "competition" should really disappear into oblivion, if their only goal is to make Japan look good in front of the world. All the participating teams in this competition should really think hard why they need to participate in this tournament.

WatchingStuff and SmithinJapan, don't forget that Japan was already talking about their starting line up in the finals - PRIOR to their game with South Korea as reported by Mainichi newspaper- as if they knew they were going to the finals already before they even played South Korea.

Another interesting tidbid on Japanese team reported by Taiwan media, prior to Japan team leaving Taiwan - about how the team behaved drunkenly dallying around with Taiwanese hostess drinky girls.

Posted in: Japan says U.N. envoy retracts remarks on schoolgirl sex See in context

I get the impression from all these denials, Japan is incapable dealing with truths.

However let's look at the inconvenient truths that Japanese government that refuses to deal with.

For instance, the report by the US State Department regarding sexual trafficking of Japanese school aged girls:

Japanese nationals, particularly runaway teenage girls and children of foreign and Japanese citizens who have acquired nationality, are also subjected to sex trafficking. The phenomenon of enjo kosai, also known as “compensated dating” and variants of the “JK business” (JK stands for joshi-kosei or high school girl) continue to facilitate the prostitution of Japanese children. Sophisticated and organized prostitution networks target vulnerable Japanese women and girls—often in poverty or with mental and intellectual disabilities—in public areas such as subways, popular youth hangouts, schools, and online; some of these women and girls become trafficking victims. Japanese men continue to be a significant source of demand for child sex tourism in Southeast Asia and, to a lesser extent, Mongolia.

http://www.state.gov/j/tip/rls/tiprpt/countries/2015/243463.htm

Not to mention that Japan comes in tier 2 nation (the only developed nation in that tier), since the US State Department rates the country poor for fighting sex/human trafficking (and Japan's poor nationalistic response to the UN proves this).

So what does it matter if the number is 10% versus 13%?

Isn't her point that Japan has a serious problem with child sex for hire, valid?

Is Japan denying that enjo kosai exists? What exactly is Japan's problem with the UN official's remarks? How has she hurt Japan that she has to be under attack by Japanese nationalists?

Anyone who have been in Japan for a bit will take no time noticing the signs out in the public. The disturbing anime's involving sexual violence against schoolgirls, the national obsession with schoolgirl uniform plays, the sexual porn involving schoolgirl's that's easily bought and widely read, the open prostitutions that go on everyday, on and on. You telling us all these don't exist, it's all a plot to make Japan look bad?

Yeah sure.

Posted in: Japan says U.N. envoy retracts remarks on schoolgirl sex See in context

She must have gotten it from the Japanese sources.

http://www.awf.or.jp/6/07-1.html

However, since these stats are pretty dated, dating back at least 15 years, we will never know how bad the situation is in Japan. That's because Japanese government refuses to look into it because it's easier to deny the problem exists and sweep the problem under the carpet.

The number may not be exactly 13%, however, there's no evidence that it's not worse than 13%. It could very well be much worse, and this is just tip of the iceberg.

The US State Department puts Japan as a second tier nation when it comes to its government trying to do something about human trafficking of women. A woeful third world record, compared to most of the OECD nations. Why? Because Japan is more worried about its artificially setting its international reputation over solving important social problems that are not supposed to exist.

what were the kono and murayama statements then?

on both occasions, the Japanese parliament refused to endorse them officially. They ended up being just apologies from individual Japanese citizens. Then their apologies were further undermined by Abe's government. It is sad that you have to negotiate something that Japan should have done on its own, decades ago. Can you imagine Poland negotiating with Germany in 2015, to apologize for starting the war and invading Poland in 1939, because Germany refuses to admit they did anything wrong? But that's what's exactly happening in S.Korea and Japan.

jj1067, no it doesn't make sense, but in a way it does make sense when you know the group nature of the Japanese society where one tries hardest not to go against the current or wave, otherwise be castigated.

I guess that's the same happening in Korea that they wouldn't prefer products made in Japan.

Speak for the Japanese who are doing all the boycotting. No such thing going on in Korea against Japanese products. Funny, but if what you say is true, such companies like Uniqlo, Honda/Toyota, Mitsubishi, Yakuza loansharks, and all the chain store markets/restaurants that sells goods to Korean consumers should also get out. Obviously they're still in the country because they're making serious money off of Koreans. I don't think Japan is yet ready to give up on $20 billion a year in trade surpluses with S.Korea. South Korea is still your top profitable country after United States, at a time when Japan has trade deficits with most other countries in the world. Japan is just cutting off their nose just because they want to be spiteful. This behavior is very childish.

Read Weekly Diamond, a Japanese business magazine, 80% of Japanese business says they don't need South Korea

Strangerland, what he said above is actually true. Out of 4000 Japanese businessmen, 80% said they don't need to do business with Japan. On the other hand, 80% of 1500 Korean businessmen polled said they need Japan to do business. This only shows how much anti-Korean sickness have effected any proper reason in Japan. Japan has billions upon billions of dollars in annual trade surplus with South Korea. Not to mention South Koreans are always either number one or two most tourists to Japan depending on the circumstances. If Japan stopped doing business with South Korea, then it will be Japan that will hurt the most.

This meeting is not going to happen, unlike what the Japanese press is reporting. Basically, South Korea's stance has not changed. No meeting with Japan until they come clean against history revisionism. What South Korean government had said was that they want to hold a meeting with Japan and give them a chance for Japan to come clean. However, Japan is rejecting that offer. So therefore, there will be no meeting, and "humoring" by Japan will be necessary. End of story, because there's no story here, so move along everyone.

Is it propaganda when the SK Business representatives states it at a meeting? I don't think so.

Why would SK business reps say they need a swap with Japan? Swaps have nothing to do with businessmen. All they care about is business, or their own interests. Japanese keep printing anti-Korean fabricated news everyday, so this type of "news' is not really surprising in a country where anti-Korean hate books become number one sellers.

Papi, Japan's swap is in US$.

Do you even understand what a currency swap is? lol.. no it's not in US$...lol..

Yup, and SK is asking Japan to re-open currency swap between the SK Won and JP Yen.

Basically they want economic assistance from Japan. I hope Abe gives her the middle finger salute.

Why do people keep on making up wishful thinkings? Why would Korea want currency swap with a worthless JP Yen? The Yen has devalued against the Won 50%.

Biggest laugh of the day, I laughed hard.

There is no way Japan will welcome millions of immigrants to Japan. Japan can't even deal with 500,000 Koreans - most of them second, third, fourth, and fifth generations in the country since end of WWII - people who externally are indistinguishable with the main population with a far lower crime rate than the pure blooded Japanese (based on Japanese national police stats, not the usual xenophobic Japanese beliefs). How are the Japanese going to deal with millions of people from Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Laos. I'm sure Japanese people will be so understanding and incorporate them into Japanese society as fellow Japanese.

LOL.. yea, we can all dream...lol

Bringing in low-skilled workers will lower the average GPD per person

Japan shockingly has barely 100,000 low skilled workers in a country of over 120 million. Yet Japan can't even treat these small number of foreigners properly. It's not as if Japan is exactly being flooded with foreign workers here. So your statement is only ridiculous.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Posted in: Japan Inc supports bringing in low-skilled foreign labor: poll See in context

So how much will they pay?

Japan wants slaves to work as their "industrial trainees" who typically got paid between $300 to $500 a month. Many were not even paid at all, as they were exploited by Japanese companies with wages deducted supposedly for paying off the workers' debt.

trailer: https://news.vice.com/video/exploiting-foreign-workers-japans-labor-pains-trailer

entire documentary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wt__lHCuH5g

Unlike in the West where foreigners are allowed to enter the countries with work visa's and allowed to change their jobs freely, Japan's foreign worker system recruit foreign workers as "industrial trainees' (not considered full time workers, but as "trainees" - code word for paying them next to nothing). After all, these workers from poor countries should be grateful for just being privileged to work in Japan, right?

While all the Hiroshima Nagasaki survivors can tell their stories to school kids when will the POW stories, be taught to the Japanese kids?

You can look and search until your face turns blue, but I guarantee you, you won't find anything about the Japanese abuses done to the POW's anywhere in the Japanese media, let alone their school system.

Posted in: Former American POWs visit Japan, recount memories See in context

I imagine the request was denied largely because the Yawata plant's World Heritage status does not cover the war years when foreign slave labor was used, and the bureaucrats don't want to sully the site's role as a source of pride for Japan by allowing/publicizing the the former POW's visit.

One of the conditions for Japan in getting UNESCO heritage status was that Japan was supposed to raise a memorial for the victims of forced labor, which would let the world know the complete history of those places, not the just promote the history that Japan wants promoted. But it looks like Japan is going back on their promises.
