As a consumer I don't have much fear about the safety of the food in the markets, Japan has a very good country and area of origin labeling system on all their foods as well.

There have been quite a few food-labeling scandals in this country!

I'm always amazed at how trusting Japanese people are- who wants to feed their children with vegetables from Fukishima?! Even if it said to be safe, why take the risk? It's important to support those farmers, but not by eating their potentially poisoned goods...

@Harry and Sarah, I don't know if they tried to notify their landlords... I know some were expecting their helpers to take care of the animals but apparently many of their helpers ended up leaving for the Philippines...

Some expats I know left the country but left their cats, birds, goldfish in their apartments with some extra food, thinking they would be back in a couple of days...it's already been 10 days since most of them left... horrible, horrible....

My kids' primary school has those (because their heads are too small for hardhats): each child has one in a little bag that hangs at the back of their chair, it's fire-proof and they put it on in case of an earthquake. They had to put them on last friday...

Posted in: Why are Tokyo cabbies so clueless? See in context

A lot of cabbies are old guys who lost their jobs and find driving a taxi is the only work they can get. As a policeman told us when a friend got hit by a taxi while riding a bike: "you should watch out for taxis, most of the drivers are very old and don't see well"!!!

A must-read about what can happen if you get into it with a J-cabbie: google "prison in japan, taxi stippy".... incredible story!

Smart microsystem technology is the way of the future! Pretty soon we'll all be implanted with wireless nano-sensors that will transmit our health data to our doctor and send us emails when something's wrong! Biohealth is revolutionary but quite scary too... Big brother is watching you!

Posted in: What do you think of school uniforms in Japan? See in context

I grew up in Australia, and had to wear a butt-ugly uniform.

Same here (everything was grey including the nickers!!!!) but at least it was age-appropriate and it didn't appeal to perverts! Japanese sailor-moon uniforms are cute on 5 year-olds but quite ridiculous on 16 year-olds... On the whole though, uniforms are great as an equalizer of status but an added cost for families who are already paying high school fees, so I'm on the fence!

Another week, another child abuse story... how many kids have to suffer before politicians decide it's time to radically reform social services, family law and child protection laws? Everything needs an overhaul: contraception, adoption, divorce, the foster-system, social services etc. There is something rotten in the kingdom of Japan and this is it.

There are a lot of crazies around and not much preventive policing- we went to the local police to report a creepy guy following our kids to school everyday, they said they couldn't do anything about it until he actually did something!

@borscht : No!!!!! After driving on the highway and seeing cars speeding in the emergency lane, motorcycles driving the wrong way in the emergency lanes, guys driving while reading a manga or watching tv, I'm totally amazed at how low the figures are for deadly accidents and! Although maybe the statistics are false... statistics are easily manipulated...

Posted in: Dear Angry Western Guy See in context

I'm all for adapting to the customs of the country I'm living in, but not when these customs are not always respected by the people living in this country. I've seen Japanese people screaming in public! When I'm riding my bicycle and a guy almost runs me over by running a red light or a stop sign, should I refrain from screaming at him (in my native language) because I'm in Japan and I should be polite in all circumstances? No! Because the Old Angry Japanese Guy doesn't refrain from yelling "@&"!§ Gaijin" at me when I pass him by with my bicycle! Should foreigners be "better Japanese" than the Japanese themselves? It's an ongoing debate at my children's intl school, where the Japanese children from the neighboring school can run and play in the street but not those from the intl school...

Posted in: Dear Angry Western Guy See in context

Recently I saw an Angry Japanese guy verbally abuse his 2-4 year old son in the parking of a supermarket. It was so violent (he was miming to hit the kid in the face as he was screaming at him) I was shellshocked. I've never seen that kind of public violence against a child in any western country I've lived in. People were just walking by and pretending to see nothing.... Let's stop pretending Japan is a perfect country with perfectly behaved people who never scream or abuse their spouses or their children. It's not true! Japan is just as flawed as everywhere else....
