The parent-bashing here is a bit over the top. There is no such thing as a perfect parent, you don't go to university to learn how to be a parent, you use your instincts, your heart, common sense and what you learnt from your own family. Granted, some people are better at it than others, some people put their own needs ahead of their kids', some people have no motherly/fatherly instincts and some people have really bad judgement. But accidents happen, even to the best parents in the world: you can't protect your children from everything. I think people shouldn't judge without knowing the full details. Losing a child is the worse thing in the world and this mother is already in her own private hell without having to be condemned by others.

This is not a Japanese-only phenomenon. My French sister in law leaves her 4 and 6 year old kids by themselves all the time. But it's true that in Japan, children's safety is not the same as in other industrialized countries. You see it with the kids in front seats of cars or with no seat-belts, in kids riding bikes without a helmet, in tiny tots going to school by themselves and playing at the local park by themselves. It's a cultural thing I guess.

Amongst advanced/rich countries, Japan has the lowest rate for women on the pill, and the highest rate for abortions. Maybe now enough dead babies have been found in rivers and bins for the government to start addressing the issue of preventing unwanted pregnancies?

How drunk do you have to be to fall off a railway platform? This is one thing I don't get about Japan: people are all about keeping up appearances but this doesn't apply to being fall-off-a-platform-drunk in public.

McDonalds tastes great in Japan, but I'm quite put off by the lack of hygiene: no gloves, and I've seen noticed at my local McD's that it's the same person that takes my order and money at the register that also goes back to make my burger (all without gloves)...

The number IS much higher than 70; 70 is just the US citizens, but add to that the number of French, Canadians, Australians etc, and you have thousands of families torn apart by these unfair laws. Not to mention the thousands of Japanese families that are also the victims of an unfair divorce court system. re: yesterday's article in the Japan Times http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/fl20100202zg.html

spudman : aside from earthquake preparedness, my kids school does not do any kind of safety information, be it "stranger danger", knowing which number to dial for emergencies or teaching the kids to wear helmets when riding their bicycles to school. I've tried to get them to but they say it's the parents' job....

If they had red light cameras on all major crossings, the Japanese government could easily finance its whole budget with the fines it would get from all the people running red lights in this country! Same with double parking/napping on avenues!!!

Unfortunately, since Japan is such a safe place, there is no education on danger like there is in other countries. When my kids were in the UK or the US, the schools would have a "stranger danger" program where they would educate kids on how to react if a stranger approaches them in the street....

Posted in: 6-year-old girl dies after being hit head-on by truck in Ibaraki See in context

I can't believe the school let their students ride their bikes to school, that is just so dangerous. This is the first time that I ever heard of an elementary school that allow kids to ride bikes to school. My kids primary school lets kids ride to school on their bike, and a lot of kids do it, including 6 year-olds who ride to school by themselves. I tried to get the school to force the kids to wear helmets (a lot of them already do but far from all) but I couldn't get the headmistress to give a damn. In the end the only thing I was able to do is get the parents associations to send out an email to their members about bicycle safety and helmets.... There is a huge avenue right a couple of streets from the school, and not one day goes by when I don't see a truck speeding or running a red light... when they're not taking a nap and blocking half the traffic on the avenue...

Most children in Japan don't wear a helmet when riding their bicycles... by law they should wear one until they are 12, but it's not enforced at all, because children mostly ride on sidewalks, so it's assumed they will be safe even without a helmet! A lot of children don't wear seatbelts in cars either : Japan has a real problem relating to bicycle/car safety!

It's funny how the japanese sense of discipline does not apply to driving at all - kids on parents' laps in the front seat, drivers running red lights, driving in the emergency lane on the highway, double parking and taking naps in busy streets and avenues.... and carseats for babies and infants are mostly unheard of! Although I saw a special carseat for dogs the other day!
